Mrs. Movies might have recognized Shawnee Smith as The Crazy Girl in Stephen King's "The Stand". She's the one who started shooting at Rob Lowe when he wouldn't return her affections.
I think my favorite character was perhaps one of the saddest... that being the lady from the diner. You just got the impression she worked hard, sacrificed, and was just daring to try to enrich her life by starting a relationship with the sheriff. Only to have her decision to stop and use that number he gave her to call him for help actually be her undoing. Especially when the last thing she see's is that he was already a victim of that thing. Absolutely defeating and horrific, and so very, very sad.
I'd add Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Scar Face (1983), Nosferatu (1979 Werner Herzog & Klaus Kinski version), Cat People (1982) and, believe it or not, I even like the 76 King Kong (which a lot of other people think really sucks).
Fun Fact... while working on this, the director was told not to kill off the kid because "audiences don't want that kind of thing". But the director went "Haha, just watch me" and did exactly that. He wanted to send the message that NO ONE was safe.
I was genuinely surprised to see the kid die like that! (Also the casting choice of the least moral government character was something they'd *never* do nowadays! [Today's 'movie code'..].)
To be fair, that kid totally had it coming. Lol. They set him up early as a bad influence. Also, he got one of the coolest deaths... so at least it wasn't some weaksauce "we lost track of him" kind of thing.

One of my favourite 80's remake and comfort films along with The Thing and The Fly. Also a crush on Shawnee Smith because of this film, she takes control and gets her game mode on when the moment calls for it.
And of course right at the creepiest part. My kids always had that gift. Daughter (14) has walked in on a dozen gore scenes at least over the years. Its why she was Chucky on Halloween ages 2-4 and has a 10 year old giant dog named Jason Voorhees Junior. She walked in right as Jason decapitated the boxer kid in Jason Takes Manhattan. This is such a horror classic, my mother actually took me to see it in the theaters at like 7 years old, no idea what she was thinking but I remember loving it as a kid somehow 🤣🤣
Shawnee Smith was the assistant in the medical office in Becker with Ted Danson. Also the girl that got her drink spiked was Erika Eleniak who played Shauni from Baywatch
As part of the '80s remake of '50s sci-fi horror classics trifecta with THE FLY & THE THING it's the full trifecta. Fantastic practical f/x that still give jaw-dropping terror.
This was filmed in Abbeville, Louisiana (not quite my hometown, but close enough) when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. It was filmed there because it was one of the few places the filmmakers could find that still had a city hall of that style. It's also why the cemetary looked the way it did (parts of Southern Louisiana are below sea level, so you can't really bury people without their bodies floating to the surface when it rains enough). A tv show Shawnee Smith was in you might (or might not) be familiar with is the Ted Danson sitcom Becker, or the Charlie Sheen sitcom Anger Management. This movie, much like The Stuff, but on a smaller budget, is a master class of practical effects. People often point to stuff like The Thing, but that didn't need many special effects shots until the halfway point of the movie. This one's got practical effects sprinkled in and around from almost the beginning. And with only a couple of exceptions of compositing and miniatures, they were done all in camera. Sure, sometimes, they had to run the footage in reverse, or tilt the camera to achieve the effect, but they were almost all done on the day they filmed the scenes. Unfortunately, this movie didn't do well in theaters, being barely marketed, but found its audience on home video and cable, becoming a cult hit.
This film almost had a mini six-degrees thing going on with Twin Peaks; Jack Nance who played Peter Martell on the show played the doctor in this movie, which also had the deputy played by Paul McCrane, who played Emil Antonowsky in Robocop, the criminal who fell into toxic waste and got run over by Ray Wise's character Leon Nash... Ray Wise having also played Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. Robocop of course also had Bob Morton played by Miguel Ferrer, who played Albert Rosenfeld in Twin Peaks.
Suggested titles .. . The Deer Hunter (1978) Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979) Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer (1988) The Honeymoon Killers (1969) The Tenant (1976) Santa Sangre (1989) Apocalypse Now (1979) Dressed to Kill (1980) Cat People (1982) The Hidden (1987)
Correct. Kevin was also in 'Catholic Boys', 'No Escape', an episode of 'Tales from the Crypt' and 'Creepshow....the series'. Matt was in 'The Outsiders'
Kevin Dillan is related to Matt Dillan and has the same classy acting skill his sibling has. A pity he disappeared over the 90's yet Matt still pops up in films every so often. He was an amazing actor and played the rebel Flag very well. He never returned to the Horror genre so I dont know his recent work Shawnee played Amanda in the Saw series and Desperate hours with Anthony Hopkins and Mickey Rooke. 22:44 they mentioned it was hot and couldnt snow so the thing acts on HEAT. I was 18 when I saw this in the theater with my little brother. We both loved it. Every time I watch it, it brings up memories of my late brother. Shawnee Smith was in the Saw movies, Uncle Buck, Summer School and a tv show with Ted Danson called Becker. She’s been in a ton of movies since she was a kid. The sheriff was in The Mist and The Walking Dead. Candy Clark who plays the diner owner was in American Graffiti, The Man Who Fell to Earth and many other great movies.

One of the best remakes from the 80s. Its atmosphere, visual world, story, characters, everything! And fantastic music: Alien - Brave New Love. It's a cliché but the 80s are such a treasury of music and movies that it is amazing.
Fun fact about the motorcycle stunt during the chase, that was a real stunt. When it landed, the bike blew both tires but the stunt driver kept it upright and going but since they had to have a wide shot they couldn't show the blown tires and had to swap out the shot much to the disappointment of the director.
Every time a new reaction of this film comes up, I'm so excited to see it lol. This came out when I was a kid, but the way you two kept saying the title of the film it reminded me of the commercials they played when they were promoting it as available on local channels. Anyway, I have a few facts to share. 1. For anime fans, the mechanic in the movie is Beau Billingslea, who is known as Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop. He's in other anime as well, but this is a fan favorite. For power ranger fans. The voice of Lord Zedd is one of the government employees who speaks out about the growth of the blob. He was super young then 2. You can try watching "Son of the Blob" which is kind of a sequel to the original movie? I've never seen it though. 3. There is a remake coming out by a big name director but I forgot his name. There has been a lot of transfers of the rights to a remake or sequel. I kinda like the idea of the movie to follow the first one since that was the intention but the film release was met with poor reviews. That's how a lot of horror films have been seen during that time though. It's great when they're cult classics later. While this film gave me a bad time as a kid, I appreciated it for the special effects. Shout out to your kids, they're so cute 😆
Fun Fact: Vicki is played by future Playboy centerfold model and "Baywatch" mega star Erika Eleniak. Interestingly, in "The Blob," the audience never even gets a clear look at her face.
From the director of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3:Dream Warriors (1987), Eraser (1996) and The Scorpion King (2002). Saw this in the theatre with my mom, one of my sisters and her friends. My mom got tickets from winning them on an radio station. This creature scared the crap out of me. Never knowing where it was coming from. The whole town seeing this thing in action was crazy. I barely slept the whole night after we came home from the feature. I did like the 58' original with Steve McQueen. But in the end, this was one of the best Sci-Fi horror remakes ever.
I literally just realized during the last blob that he always has a hat on. And I wondered if he was bald underneath. Him adding a sensor to his bald head answers it for me

@@clevelandcbi oh you're right she's very good at imitating it 🤣. Something funny is I was the kid in this situation but instead I walked in on my cousin watching childs play 3 and it was the garbage truck crush scene.
@@FluorescentPhnix1 That's her second favorite scene after Chucky getting pissed when the old guy has a heart attack.
- "Aw, you gotta be f***ing kidding me!!!" 🤣🤣
I don't know if anyone has beaten me to this but Fun Fact: Shawnee Smith's scream when seeing Paul getting devoured was genuine as it was her first time seeing the effects
I find it so interesting that they spared the dog in this remake unlike in the original but they were so much more brutal in every other possible way.
The Thing, The Fly & The Blob are the benchmark for 80s horror. 🥰🥰🥰
I liked how the blob covered Mr.movies head when his hat came off lol. Nothing to be ashamed of if he's bald.
The Thing, The Fly, The Blob and Dawn of the Dead (2004) are the best remakes ever
2004
@@Madbandit77 correct 👍
There is a sequel to the original called "Beware! The Blob" from 1972, directed by Larry Hagman.
I like the theme of ordinary people facing down the horror.
Being the '80s the US military is stereotypically the real baddie.
Frank Darabont was drawing on Stephen King for inspiration here. So they made the Blob be a bioweapon in the same vein as the Superflu from "The Stand".
As it should be.
@@ShadowSonic2And just for extra spice Brian Flagg's name was taken from Randall Flagg in The Stand (which Shawnee Smith also appeared in a couple years later). Nice symmetry to all of that.
One of my favourite 80's remake and comfort films along with The Thing and The Fly. Also a crush on Shawnee Smith because of this film, she takes control and gets her game mode on when the moment calls for it.
Fun fact: Shawnee Smith character in this movie was an inspiration for Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Actually, it was an episode of "The Donna Reed Show" Joss Whedon's grandfather John wrote.
At least we know why Amanda started using drugs.
I thought it was the girls from "Night of the Comet"?
Good to know.
@@ShadowSonic2 her as well, there were a couple different inspirations
Perfect timing: "The sink's unclogged."
Thought it was freaking hilarious.
Fun fact: the black scientist is played by the same actor that played Willy Brown, in Crossroads (which I highly recommend seeing!).
Joe Seneca.
Wasn't he in A Time To Kill also??
@@clevelandcbi He was in Silverado.
@@Madbandit77Damn. Just looked it up. A Time To Kill was his last role. Died 3 weeks after it hit the theaters. He was good in Silverado too btw.
This is such a horror classic, my mother actually took me to see it in the theaters at like 7 years old, no idea what she was thinking but I remember loving it as a kid somehow 🤣🤣
I could never get over the AMAZING effects of this movie..especially considering when it was made.
Shawnee Smith was the assistant
in the medical office in Becker with Ted Danson.
The practical effects in this🙏🙏🙏
The creature in THIS one resembles a LIVING PILE OF GUTS to me.
Like a living shape shifting stomach?
@@16shogunelitegreen Pretty apt description there.
The Blob, The Thing, The Fly........all remakes, all amazing. These should be considered a trilogy!
I LOVE the applause when the girls show up, lol. It's almost like a random break to a sitcom.
Mrs Movies probably knows Shawnee Smith from “The Stand”. She had a memorable role.
Gonna show my 7 year old this this summer. Can Not Wait
The telephone booth scene is SO good! 😁 One of the "best" horror movie deaths imo.
I love when their daughters enter the room. 😂. It’s just a very relatable moment every time.
It's a GIANT BOOGER!!
A moco gone loco!!
Kevin Dillon's great in Entourage. Him and Jeremy Piven were the best part of that show imho. JP insulting his assistant was comedy 🥇
i liked how this movie wasn't afraid to kill characters that you know would survive in other horror
Suggested titles .. .
The Deer Hunter (1978)
Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)
Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer (1988)
The Honeymoon Killers (1969)
The Tenant (1976)
Santa Sangre (1989)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Cat People (1982)
The Hidden (1987)
And Dale from The Walking Dead
Even this remake is a classic.
Kevin is actually Matt's younger brother (by 2 years) 😃
Correct. Kevin was also in 'Catholic Boys', 'No Escape', an episode of 'Tales from the Crypt' and 'Creepshow....the series'.
Matt was in 'The Outsiders'
Shawnee Smith is definitely an underrated scream queen.
Shawnee Smith was also in the TV miniseries of The Stand.
When that kid came out of the water all decayed and shit, scared and scarred me.
"It must be part 6, there's no boobies in that one" had me rolling.
You should probably start thinking about putting a latch on that door next time you watch a horror movie so your kids don’t walk in again.
Gotta watch "Beware! The Blob (1972)". The sequel to the original movie.
This movie is legendary. One of the best remakes ever made.
Greetings from Germany my friends 👍❤️
Kevin Dillan is related to Matt Dillan and has the same classy acting skill his sibling has. A pity he disappeared over the 90's yet Matt still pops up in films every so often. He was an amazing actor and played the rebel Flag very well. He never returned to the Horror genre so I dont know his recent work Shawnee played Amanda in the Saw series and Desperate hours with Anthony Hopkins and Mickey Rooke. 22:44 they mentioned it was hot and couldnt snow so the thing acts on HEAT. It wouldnt enter the freezer because it is weak to the cold in there
I like Kevin Dillon, too, and wish he had gotten more roles and love. A similar fate as Chris Penn, sadly.
@@scorpiouk5914 I remember Chris Penn was a large chubby man and sadly they cast him as a baddie when he played a hero just as well so I agree there
@@flatcapman I always called my favorite Cleveland Indians player (Jim Thome) "Willard" after Chris Penn's character in Footloose lol. Looked just like him.
Kevin Dillon still is in some thing, wasn't he in Entourage?
My Bodyguard (1980) Chris Makepeace, Matt Dillon, Adam Baldwin, Joan Cusack , Martin Mull and the great Ruth Gordon
Speaking of Ruth Gordon there, wonder if these two will ever do Harold And Maud or Every which Way but Loose? .. . or have they already perhaps (really don't know)?
@@Dunlop-hg2ql also Rosemary's Baby for that matter. Rurh Gordon was great!
Sorry for your loss, my friend. 😞😥
This horror movie is one of the only films that’s ever scared me because we had a kitchen sink just like the one in the restaurant in the first house I ever lived in.
I love Shawnee Smith.
I had such a crush on Shawnee Smith. The character she played on Becker.💛
I've been crazy about since this. And she's still cute as hell.
I saw this in the theatre. I was so baked! I couldn't believe how good it was. Perfect Stoner movie. Effects still hold. So does the mullet. "Business in front, party in the back".
If you play D&D, then THIS is how your DM should run all Slimes, Molds, Oozes, and Jellies.
The players may hate them for it, but it is also worth it.
Blob took advanced [Mimic] lessons, welcome back to You, Me and the Boobies!!
Fun fact. Donovan Leitch (the dude who gets it in the hospital/doctor's office) is the Brother of Ione Sky and son of the singer Donovan (Mellow Yellow, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Sunshine Superman, etc...)
One thing I love about this movie is they’re not afraid to kill the characters you think won’t get killed because most horror movies they would have plot armor
THANK YOU!!° Had a crush on Shawnee (Meg) since I was 7 and saw this in the theater. And my brother had a pharmacist moment. Was telling e1 on his team about his freaky GF. Coach's daughter walks onto the field, says hi dad then kissed my brother. 🤣🤣🤣
One of the best remakes from the 80s. Its atmosphere, visual world, story, characters, everything! And fantastic music: Alien - Brave New Love. It's a cliché but the 80s are such a treasury of music and movies that it is amazing.
I love how unapologetically gory this remake is to the original! Special effects of course, are great!
A young Amanda from SAW. 😊
He was super young then
Beau also played George in the beginning of "Real Genius", which Mr and Mrs. Movies watched.
Fun Fact: Vicki is played by future Playboy centerfold model and "Baywatch" mega star Erika Eleniak. Interestingly, in "The Blob," the audience never even gets a clear look at her face.
Without cheating (me I mean), did she jump out of the cake in Under Siege 2??
@@clevelandcbiyeah,the first one.
Him adding a sensor to his bald head answers it for me
'Beware! The Blob' 1972 is the sequel to the original.
The sheriff is the gang member of robocop that got killed by the toxic waste
The deputy was the gang member. They mention that at 20:18.
Check out Phantoms 1998. With Ben Affleck. It is another creature feature just like this movie movie.
Amazing Reaction 👏 🙀 😎💯
I remember watching some of this on Fearnet.
