Curious why Greg is talking about water in his explanation of the idiom? Read more on our blog: englishbabyblog.com/2010/12/20...
challenge to authority is something that has been valuable in both punk, and in science, wellsaid.
i imagine greg graffin is one bad ass professor. i bet a TON of people get into his class expecting to pass because they are fans of his music and he flunks them for not doing their work.
I was at this lecture and signing! Greg signed my copy of Anarchy Evolution. Cool book for BR fans.
I felt obligated to comment because of my name. Greg Graffin, you have had a great career as everything you have been involved with has been great, from bad religion to your acoustic songs to your publishings. I can't wait to hear/read what you do next.
I’m definitely going to use your first sentence on a video fat mike posts someday 😂
Actually, the term "against the grain" is referring to the grain in wood, and the idea that wood is strongest in the direction that is against the grain, and therefore it is most difficult to move in this direction. I'm surprised that Greg does not know this.
That would be pretty boring if his songs were all about forestry or home construction.
Y'know, I have to admit I'd listen to punk rock about carpentry if the lyrics were written by Bad Religion ;)
The album cover also alludes to how farmers will thresh stalks of corn and wheat against the grain.

@Cosmic Fool This is supposedly pretty frequently used metaphore. Coriulanus by shakespeare "Say, you chose him more after our commandment than as guided by your own true affections, and that your minds, preoccupied with what you rather must do than what you should, made you against the grain to voice him consul: lay the fault on us."
It means and has for many years meant something to the affect of doing what would be the consensus, standard or as intended.
i agree with everything greg just said in that video
@hellochannelenglish I would have to agree. I think Greg's explanation reflects years of singing the song "Against the Grain" which has lots of water imagery in it. I added a link to the notes of the video where you can read more about this.
He seems like such a nice and cool guy
I understood it to be like a chaff of wheat. If you feel the grain going from the bottom up, it's smooth and easy, and if you go downwards (against the grain) it is rough, resulting in you taking off the grain from the stem.
I'm sure Greg Graffin and Neil Peart coulda/would've had some interesting conversations about education and literature.
@hellochannelenglish gotta agree... though i think he was put on the spot and probably just thought of another comparable phrase to explain
This is a really cool idea for people learning english.
"Engish Baby!" Gotta love that
@BasementHaxxProd To add to my previous point, the phrase has a lot of relevance to punk in general.
Lol, I don't know why but by the way he moves and all, his body language, reminded me a bit of Nicolas Cage haha. Greg's the man, he cleared this doubt of mine so well.
When you saw wood, it’s much easier to saw with the grain then across (against) it. Great interview though!
i always thought it had to do with the grain of an old record
He mixed up one metaphor with another. Against the grain and against the current mean the same thing so explaining one explains them both.
The Narrator sounds like Phreak O.o
I hate to disagree with Greg, especially on the title of his own song, but the etymology of the phrase "against the grain" has nothing to do with fish. Fish and streams have no grain. Streams have currents. Wood has grain, and cutting against the grain is harder than cutting with the grain. There's a similar concept in sewing as well, and probably some other applications. I don't know which one might have given rise to the saying first, I just know it wasn't fish.

but how is that more rewarding though?
because the chances of you discovering something "new" or "different" is greater when going against the established norm
i mean that's how our ancestors did it, worked pretty well
now we got civilization 😊
College graduates can't find jobs because we have 100 million dental hygienists, hair dressers, make up artists, and criminal justice degrees. we need engineers, doctors, teachers, and sales and marketing professionals. He never went to itt tech or devry and took a bunch of open book tests, paid 60 thousand dollars to say he knows something on a piece of paper and then complain about it. call it what you want though
Greg before he went near senile. We'll always remember you Greg
i own firearms, i've served in the military and I work very hard. pay a hell of alot of taxes too. the problem with voting is in order for your vote to count you have to be a part of a majority in a college of electorials. for instance I voted for romney as a lesser of two evils simply because ron paul didn't stand a fucking chance. sadly, and a permanent underclass has been in order for some time. people are just now catching on.
Water has no grain. The phrase refers to wood grain.
The phrase refers to direction
love greg but he kind of sounds like napolean dynomite in this interview
UCLA.
english baby? i dont urdenstand that,
Maybe a degree in ethnic studies, women's studies or basket weaving will get you the big bucks eh!?
An american teaching English'? Haha
Given your tenuous grasp of the subject, maybe he could've helped you out.
Sorry for judging you man. I supported Ron Paul but then was stuck with Romney. I am just tired of Hollywood elitists and people like Greg Graffin touting their socialist dogma when in fact they help prop up tyrants like Obama, Finestien, Boxer ect...
USPatriotsforLiberty Graffin is in a punk rock band, punk rock bands write songs about their opinions and viewpoints. If you can't handle that, don't listen to punk rock.
