Wouldn't it be amazing to see some of the lectures from Gregg Graffin's classes he teaches. I'd love to see him give a lecture on evolution or related topics.people should tweet at him they'd like to see videos of his lectures so that maybe he'll record some of his future lectures and upload them somewhere, and/or release any past ones if he has recorded them. itd be amazing
I see what some people are saying that his dissertation is more philosophical than scientific. The thing is, evolution is not just of the body but also of ideas and social norms. For instance, things like love, guilt, and altruism have arguments that they are developed traits that aided in creating a cohesive group dynamic to increase the chances of survival. He was trying to broach a similar connection to religion. At least that's what I think, if someone wants to refute me go ahead.
I'm reading his dissertation right now. Its really deep. It is not only helping me understand the perspectives of others but is really helping me to understand and define my own belief system. Buy the book. Its called "Evolution and Religion: Questioning the Beliefs of the World's Eminent Evolutionists" Good stuff!
He explains it quite clearly. His dissertation is in Zoology, yet part of his portfolio of work revolves around a statistic involving philosophical beliefs. This is why history and philosophical science is relevent within his hard science discipline. He is answering a direct question, and not discussing his entire coursework. Simply spaeking to a questionaire which is only a part of his portfolio. Listen up.
Isn't choosing to be an atheist the same as choosing to deny a God? Where as being religious is choosing to accept a God. No amount of scientific research or discovery will ever be able to prove nor disprove whether or not a God exists, because it would exist beyond the bounds and laws of logic and science. So, a Christian is no more naive to choose God than an atheist is to choose NO God. There will never be absolute proof on either side. Therefor, your choice is based on faith. You have none.
The foundation of those beliefs came from egypt and have a 5000+ year history. Everything we know today came from this religious base- Including Science, observation, and Mathematics. All Numbers we currently use are created from dividing a circle or "sun" with a cross, The amount of numbers we chose to make before repeating again are 9, 7 for each major planet, 1 for the sun and 1 for the earth. This was also the basis for Time, Horus the god of the Sun is depicted wearing a watch. (cont)
I grew up with the ideals of Christianity and Jesus the savior etc. and sometimes it feels like I've no choice but to believe because I've believed my whole life. I was taught the 'seed' of doubt of my faith is sown by Satan himself. So naturally I'm extremely conflicted as to drop my faith and live my own life, and risk being self-conscious that I let Satan win. (which ironically would mean I didn't truly let go of my faith) I don't know man. I just don't have the capacity to be an atheist..

@ronocko lets look at the dino. Of course the appearance of the original dino could certainly change, but the results would always be within the dino species. This is clearly seen within the vast variety of the dog species. All of them are different and all of them are dogs. The bottom line is that mutation defiantly can change creatures, mostly for the worse occasionally for the better, but they never create a new type of creature.
@ironicsomething No. A PhD usually lasts 5 years, you have to take 2 years of coursework, write research papers, and then do an original dissertation that contributes to human knowledge. The survey is probably part of his dissertation, dissertations are usually the size of a small book. Don't discredit PhD's, it takes a lot of work and effort.
@1978alexn Groups evolve not just single animals, We don't see transitions because everything is in transition you don't look like your parents exactly the small differences accumulate and when in nature certain beneficial adaptations will be chosen (by nature due to the fact they are better suited to survive under a current condition) and that trait will spread through the populace. Pinpoint the exact moments you changed from a baby to a toddler to a child to a teenager to an adult...
Dr. Graffin is a smart guy. Little doubt exists about that. However, after listening to him explain his dissertation on test results that are completely obvious to those who pay attention to this stuff, I have to question the leniency of the critical methods Dr. Graffin's dissertation was afforded.
I have absolutely zero points of reference for any of his allusions, but I think I understood what he meant generally. He was just suggesting that there are allot of people out there who are scientists in title only. Right?
clicked what? anyway, was that below addressed to me? Because with a communal group, how would a form of government rise to power if everyone refuses to be lead by them?
I believe when he talks about religion being compatible or incompatible with evolution, he doesn't just mean Christianity, Judiasm or Islam, I believe he is referring to Naturalism, which can be considered a religion. Or you can consider it this way: Einstein once said "Science without religion is boring. Religion without science is blind." But Einstein also said that he didn't believe in a personal God. Steven Hawking also mentioned the "Mind of God" but he was referring to laws of physics.
I pretty much agree that religion is a social tool and adaptation of humans. I am open to the "mystical" component of the "religious" experience, but I kinda feel that religion right now is causing a lot of problems in the world. I'm not so sure that biologicl "evolution" is going to a good place though b/c of all the chemicals/pollutants & things we're doing to ourselves-its almost as if we are in a race with ourselves to see which component will be destroyed the fastest....
Yes, you are right in that sense 100%, I agree. And as most (if not all) scientists are independent-minded, and most of them agree, then that produces a likely observation, do you agree? (By the way, I have no connotations of sarcasm or hostility here)
interesting thesis. perhaps we can learn something from this if we actually read into it. because this runs concurrent with some of the input Ive also received over the last 10 years.
@1978alexn It's not disputed there may be life on other planets it's disputed the technology exists to traverse the galaxy nevermind the universe if there was intelligent life capable of the sort of travel we would have made contact with them via radio waves that we've sent out light years. We haven't stopped evolving how many people do you see for example with a furrowed brow typical in our species uptill about 3000 - 4000 years ago, I already explained time is a key factor aswell as necessity
Entropy and Order are opposite sides of the same coin, NEITHER can exist without the other. They, like all opposites, validate the existence of each other.
very good greg yet the question arises by itself: ¿why should we be compelled to accept a world view that makes compatible religion and evolutionary biology? LOVE BR by the way
He's always shown his depth of knowledge in his lyrics, if you don't think Greg Graffin is a fucking genious then you may have a deep seeded problem of your own!
Mr Graffin "MAY" sound a little bit un-ortodox... But i HAVE to admit he got a LOT(!) of logical/non religious points here. As we ALL knew, knowlige evolves from thinking,NOT from religion...
Fossils of Homo heidelbergensis have shown evidence of ceremonial burials, which implies a belief in an afterlife and therefore some form of religion. This is seen as one of the key points showing the development of intelligence in early humans. Greg is absolutely correct, religion is part of evolution.
Yes, but what other way may we find out that evidence agrees if not by consulting a scientist, unless we are a scientist ourselves. They show the evidence when they have a lead, if they do not show these, or don't go along with them, they are merely "prophets".
Even through what you say, there can still be anarchy, people naturally want to do what is best for them, and if they open their eyes, everyone should see the hypocrisy of the common government. You're right, it cannot exist in it's ideal form, but there can be a form, of, even as you speak, because there will still need to be people to organize majority votes, corporation heads, and law that is determined by the people instead of 1 person, anyway, again good observation.
@Chanut83 Consider we scientifically, technologically and medically advance to a point where we "get rid of" death and aging, then what? I guess we'll scoff at ourselves.
@Chanut83 Science is the pursuit of knowledge, and the scientific method is composed of fundamental building blocks of how we understand our world and the universe in which it resides. Only an unwise man would scoff at prior scientific endeavors, given that they don't consider the way in which the fountain of knowledge grows through trial and error. Life and existence are products of complex chemical reactions that can be mapped by mathematicians; the true facilitators of scientific consensus.
@stevecash83 It isn't a matter of whether or not there is an absolute answer to the question of the existence of god; it's about what the implications of the answer would be. The ideas themselves are irrelevant; it's a question of how ideas lead people to live. Furthermore, if you're referencing the laws of logic, one never has to disprove a negation. The logical tautology of atheism holds until god is proven to exist.
oops, accidentally pressed enter. anyway, I was going to say: on certain subjects, I find it more logical to go with the majority, such as evolution, dinosaurs, ancient life, etc. NOT all the time though, you are correct.
I'm a big fan of Greg's, but I have to agree with some of the other posters in that I don't see the relevance of his study. What scientists believe on a philosophical subject is, in my opinion, scientifically irrelevant. It may have some interesting social implications, but this was for a science PhD.
It depends. If professors and teachers are telling students that evolution or theology or conservative business practice or liberalism IS "the way", then yes that is clearly attempted indoctrination. Luckily, I've only come across one professor like that. I believe "Submission Complete" is a BR song about this. Narrow-minded beliefs/practices without understanding and considering alternative solutions, that is the result of indoctrination. It depends!
In times of war:Johns very little brother had a corn to eat and asked his brother if he wants 1/2 John said he just had one..can u prove not ?Their father was watching them and didnt say a thing..probably his father was watching and didnt say a thing niether -but john didnt felt any hunger that night -u shouldnt feel any niether...how is that possible?i just made that up. A man of intelligence would never question someones good will and charity so stop bothering ur mind - ur not alone here
I'm not a fan of generalizations. I can't speak for other disciplines but I'm 19 working on my Bachelor's in Political Science and if anything, I've learned to be skeptical. I'm not a moron. Indoctrination is a choice, I believe. Not every political scientist is going to be a liberal. Nonetheless, your assumption could have some validity. I take things I and other people say with a grain of salt. Academia isn't taught by the state, it's funded by the state. Politicians aren't the teachers.
The chicken definately came before the egg, so where did the chicken come from? It evolved from a religious dinosaur, spared only by his relatives because they didn't eat chicken on Sunday.
you could say the same about religion. It is merely popular belief with no scientific backing. When you ask a scientist, I would not call him a "majority" in the sense that you mentioned.
Anarchy is, IMO, humanly impossible. As social animals humans group together due to our "Strength in Numbers" type instincts. In the group one or more will always be looked to for guidance, advice, etc making them informal leaders. I wonder how many punk fans Graffin has put onto science. So few other musicians have achieved that. He's the epitome of a role model.
So much respect for Greg Graffin

@ronocko ok I'm starting to believe you. so your sating that apes evolved from pigs from elephants from mamaths yes humans may have been once mamaths
man, he knows many big words q;
