So glad you are okay, man. The scar adds character. I realize how silly I have been. If I use a drill bit in a drill, I grab safety glasses. When I shoot an explosive mortar off from a cardboard tube that's been in the humidity of a garage for two years, I throw caution to the wind. It doesn't make sense. Thanks for the lesson.

Do people just not think with fireworks? It's fairly common to look up to see the display and get hit in the face with bits of powder and cardboard as they fall down from the shells when the wind isn't just right.
I have at least a half dozen safety glasses spread around my house. Just the common cheap kind. Didn't plan on keeping them spread around, it just happened over time but has proven quite valuable to simply have them on hand without needing to go look for them. This is on top of more specialized sets that I keep in the basement with my tools.
Using safety glasses (or at least some form of eye protection) is so ingrained into my being that I seriously cannot say when or how it happened. Thus I really never understand why people will only use them some of the times that they should.
I don't freak out over safety stuff like people from OSHA, but when it comes to the eyes, I take that threat more seriously than just about any other common hazard.
caveat: I do not use corrective lenses of any type, so my habit of reaching for safety glasses has nothing to do with that, as it is with a few people I know.

Yeah, I work construction and I’ve been fired multiple times for being too slow and cautious. I’m 52, and never had a serious injury (yet!), unlike a lot of people who think I’m “too careful.” Meanwhile, I’m trying to die of old age with ten fingers and two eyes.

14 here, and into construction, electrical, rockets, etc. Taking it slow and learning about safety alongside the skills needed to do things. I feel like this is the best way to get by dangerous tasks, even if you are criticized.

@@rocketman1969 Best advice on construction is to think ahead. Lots of people out there willing to risk your neck, your back, your future arthritis for a couple extra bucks in their pocket. Don't fall for it, my back still troubles me occasionally from stupid macho and poor job choices as a kid (concrete mostly) rember you have to work with the same body when you get older and you will be making more money when your older.
lol, I thought I was the only one like that. Been in a lot of different construction and working with kilovolts. My boss now always tries to do things quicker and theres not a day he aint bleeding somewhere.
Good God, man. I completely empathize with your situation. 9/2, at work building a police car, a 1/2 in. drill bit bound up and exploded, sending a 5mmX10mm shard through my cornea and out the side of my left eye. I lost part of my retina and my lens. Pardon the pun, but these are eye-opening experiences for sure. I wish you the best, brother, and a speedy and full recovery. I guess you weren't wearing eye protection? That's scary. Hope you are ok now.
I was terminating some fiber optics when a strand popped just as I was doing the final cleave before installing the connector. For those who don't work with the stuff, that means that I had the fiber completely stripped of cladding, cleaned, and down to bare glass. Short-sighted as I am, of COURSE I was looking over the top of my glasses and had it right in front of my face. Piece hit me in the left eye.
Went to the ER, left eye running a solid stream of tears. Turns out that the ER has all kinds of nifty tools, special optics, contrast dyes, etc. to locate and remove foreign objects in the eye. Unfortunately, they don't work well when the foreign object in question is a very small piece of optically clear glass floating around in an optically clear liquid.
They never did actually see it, but I could sure feel it moving around. In the end, they defaulted to the same steps as I took as immediate First Aid. Difference was that I only had 1 Eye Wash Kit in the box. After about 5 or 6 more (jumbo-sized) eye wash kits in the ER, it finally went away. All was fine after that, other than a few days of irritation.
Were they cheap drill bits?

Not as much as then finding that you cannot do anything with that wisdom, because no one takes it seriously; and then you suffer as a result. I know what that is like and that REALLY HURTS

At our rocket test and flight facility, I demand people working with energetics wear eye protection. Several times in my years of rocketry I've witnessed incidents that could have resulted in eye loss without eye protection. th-cam.com/video/6JcD-VqpioE/w-d-xo.html
Glad you're recovering. I tried contact lenses for just long enough to decide I'd much rather have the extra protection of glasses in front of my eyes at all times.

In Sweden we have a saying whenever you just barely escape injury, it literally translates to "that was close to the eye", based on that the eyes being one of the most precious underrated things we have. Glad you got through it with hopefully a full recovery. Stay safe and keep up the great vids.

I have a pyro channel. One of my rules is: If the firework is a dud let it lay and stay that way. Don't investigate. I usually let it lay until the next day. Then I take a look to see what might of went wrong. I get duds sometime when dealing with (as you did) old bangers. What's happened is the composition has changed because of moisture getting into the tube and/or the chemical composition mix has broken down making the composition useless or not as intended. Always be cautious with duds.
This is really good advice. The massive auto airbag recall was largely due to humidity changing the explosive properties over time. I also just don’t really trust cheap fireworks. So many companies are shaving every last penny out of their products these days and it’s essentially impossible to hold Chinese companies liable for dangerous products.
As a private pyro, I approve this message. I typically douse the thing with my hose and let it sit for an hour, then I toss a stick at it. I figure if anything is going to happen, it'll be in that moment when the impact jars loose some fresh surface area that contacts a hot spot. I still let it sit for about 20 minutes after that and then go over and immediately dunk it in the bucket. It's a constant supervision process because some would walk up to it to throw it away, but it's at least safe. That said, I've never bought enough fireworks to have any left over, so I've only ever dealt with 2 actually dangerous duds and several dead sparklers, firecrackers, and bottle rockets. Oh, a few bottle rocket misfires too. Fuse burned in, a puff of smoke with no thrust came out.
That said, I do still douse my cakes and fountains when they're done. Seen more than a few completely burst into flames at the end.
That is so horrible I am so glad you are okay. All the best and so happy you are well. It was so scary I scrolled down and couldn't watch just the thought of you injuring yourself. I've always admired your patience and expertise in everything you approach. Even as a tech enthusiast and a physician, your videos on brewing were the only reason I felt "safe" dabbling in that myself even though I had been bombarded by youtube videos on the topic and had done a ton of research myself. The level of care and caution and knowledge you have, and the extremely organized and patient approach you have is very confidence inspiring. To see you get injured is truly shocking, unfortunate and I am eternally grateful that you are well and still have the passion in science to keep going. God bless you and your family, I actually save your videos to show my son when he is old enough hoping he would want to try some together. Thank you for everything you do. Just thought i'd share the sentiment from a fan half-way across the world.
My rule of thumb for fireworks is to only approach them after 7-10 minutes have passed in case of misfire. This has helped me to prevent injuries in multiple cases. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery, aswell as a happy new year!
Also have a hose ready for when they do misfire. Spray it from a distance which’ll help prevent any problems.
You'll need more than two thumbs if you adhere to that rule.
7-10 minutes is nothing in the lifespan of a failed firework. 7-10 hours, weeks or years isn't even advisable as Murphy's law is a constant. Best to just treat it like it's going to go off and prepare yourself accordingly.
I usually just set the original firework on fire from a safe distance and watch from inside as the neighbours call the psych ward.
@@MrAgentEcho Yes when we were kids my father always had buckets of water to douse fireworks that didn't go off if he had to go near them or put the spent sparklers in. If he could he would just leave them till the morning then go deal with them in the light. Our garden was small so sometimes it was necessary to put out the duds to light the next firework. He used to keep them in a tin and set up & light two or 3 at a time, Mind you back then they weren't the military grade things they seem to be today!
I'd treat it like a gun misfire. at least 10 minutes before ejecting and inspecting the shell. depending on size, you might want to wait longer.
@@MrAgentEcho good advice but I want to make it clear that it's not safe even when dowsed with water. firework fuses are waterproof and a firework itself carries its own oxidizer. Even when sprayed with water you still need to wait. Its not a garentee that it is rendered safe. The best thing to do is be patient. Be safe everyone!

Nothing'll convince you of both the frailty of man and the beauty of our world faster than learning to fly. You spend so much time identifying and mitigating risk, but sometimes something completely beyond your control comes out of left field and there's not a damn thing you could have done to prevent it. Totally worth it, wouldn't trade it for the world.
The fact that control is an illusion is common knowledge to all married men.
I think all airline pilots should fly a long term relationship before they are deemed fit to fly commercial aircraft!

@@Cybertruck1000 A welding teacher I had was of the opinion that angle grinders would probably be banned if invented today. I hated working with those things.
@@Tunkkis People going without gloves ,no guard or even safety glasses. The first time one of those discs shatters on you.. It doesn't bear thinking about.
@@Tunkkis I work in a welding shop, and surprisingly, when used correctly, angle grinder are safer than drills... We always keep guards and handle and wear face shields.
Just started watching your channel . . found it a week back and came across this. Such a good message to people, and I think it is lost on a lot of people that do not understand the speed at which these events happen until you experience them (Explosions, car crashes, projectiles . . ) Our brains are not equipped to process data that fast.

I'm so glad you are okay. My dad and I had a similar firework go off like that but for us it happened while we were still running back and everyone was ok. It really hammers home how dangerous these things can be.

I admire that you had the courage and consideration to share this experience with all of us. All mistakes are learning opportunities. This reminds me of my 5th grade science teacher Mr. Germano, and this is totally worth sharing and I have followed this advice my whole life and it has paid off. I can remember it like it was yesterday and I'm 42 now. We came into class and he had the smashed windshield of a car on display in the front of the classroom. Turned out that was the windshield from his Jeep. He ended up making a big part of that days lesson about what to do when animals cross the road in front of you. His lesson was to NEVER swerve to miss an animal, EVER. Yes it's sad and stressful if you hit someones pet dog or cat or a squirrel or raccoon but it's always better to hit the animal and potentially save your life and vehicle. It's fine to slow down but never leave your lane because you might damage your vehicle or yourself or someone else if you cross the center line or edge line. I will admit I have hit a handful of squirrels over the years and even a small dog that I had no chance of missing and I knew exactly how to handle it and I just clench my teeth and get ready for the bone crunch and thud. I don't get hurt and I don't wreck my car.

As an amateur mechanic I sympathize. My car rolled over my Iphone a few years ago. Better than having it fall on my head obviously, but it was scary because I was behind and beneath the car when it started rolling. I had forgotten to chock the wheels.

Love that you did this. It's hard for many to understand the real dangers involved and often think nothing of their own safety until it's too late.
I think many would benefit in more of a detailed explanation of what caused the sudden detonation and explosion…it doesn’t sound like it was a roman candle firework. Seems like it was a ’shell’ with perhaps a report inside.
He’s a lucky man.

@@Val_Halla777 the firework was simply old and unsafe. Storing fireworks improperly or simply for a long time, in a humid place causes the paper to soak and weaken, and the powder grains to degrade into a fine powder or a sand castle.
Now I'm not some expert, but I'm gonna throw a guess that instead of multiple isolated charges, you had one big mess inside that may not have lit up at all, or like it happened a while, until the powder dried enough to explode proper,. Too much went at once and not where it should have lit first, so pressure built and the rest of the black powder was activated by the shock.

@@Val_Halla777 being in a garage, it's likely the outer tube swelled from moisture, more than once over the time it sat Leaving small gaps.
Since the only thing separating the stars and lift charges in a Roman candle is saw dust. That would be bad.
First lift charge sends flames down instead of up out of the tube. Lighting all 5 or 10 lift charges at once, turning it into a big firecracker.
It's definitely best to keep fireworks in a temp controlled environment.
@@youtubesucks-yx6kk Yeah I wonder how often mortars blow up in this fashion. It seems like anything that obstructs the tube would also potentially turn the whole thing into a bomb.

There are plenty out there that don't even treat "safe" like it's a thing *at all*, nevermind give it the diligence it needs.
Good to hear you'll likely recover all the way. I've had things fly at my face where it could have been much worse, and in the one case possibly "the worst" had I not been lucky enough and had just enough in the way to keep it from being just that. It *always* happens much quicker than we expect.

A friend of mine had the exact same thing happening to him, and that was a 30 minutes after they tried to fire thing off, extremely unpredictable.
Some really good words on safety you have there, it cannot be overstated how important it is in high energy applications.

@@DavidLindes Yeah sounds pretty extreme and strange, my only guess is that paper was fizzling ever so slowly to a build up enough for it to go off. Could have been packed so hard it had trouble getting oxygen in.

You're one of my highest regarded Science, Engineering, and Technology channels and I still can't believe this. Been part of some freak accidents myself, (narrowly avoided a pyrotechnical mishap of my own tonight if I'm being honest) but this video really hammered the point home. If it can happen to someone with so much wisdom, education, and experience behind them, such as you, then it can happen to any of us. It's an unfortunate but welcomed reminder.
Respect! Safety is really a 24/7 philosophy. I totally agree. I also commend you for doing this video, because admitting to be so "stupid" to do what you do, despite your own approach (which always puts safety first), you took the bitter pill to look like an "idiot", only for the rest of us to learn from your mistakes and not our own. For this, you have my deepest gratitude. There are only a handful of people, who show such a deep humble experience on their own and share it with the world. I am lucky to say that I did not have any injuries or "close calls" in my life yet, although I "played" with certainly deadly currents, etc. One thing I stay away from are explosives of any kind. I have deep respect for experts and when I visited one guy, who was a voluntary firefighter and at the same time a classic car enthusiast, who did some welding on my old car, I noticed his huge stash of pyrotechnics next to the garage. I could not hesitate, had to ask as well as voice my opinion. I was quite relieved when he told me, that he is a certified mining explosive and blasting specialist, and he reassured me that he know what he is doing as well as how he is storing all that stuff. He is still OK, healthy and with all fingers and limbs. He also did a great deal of welding on my 1986 Škoda 130L. I am satisfied and reassured he is doing OK. There are "mentally gifted" people, like you, or he is, but we must be wary that even the mentally gifted people can do "stupid" things. Nobody is immune to errors. I am certainly not immune to them, even though, when I work with anything that could hurt me or others in any possible way, my thoughts are always on "what could go wrong in the worst case scenario" and I act accordingly. I do not "trust" any safety features, or procedures blindly, I always expect things to fail one way or the other. Maybe I am a bit too cautious, but I rather be slow than sorry. As said, I highly commend this video. If at least one person learned from it, it payed off. I hope your eyesight will get back equally good and wish you all the best. I admin having much less experience in many things and that might be the reason why I am so careful, maybe overly slow by some standards. But I know why. And I do not want ever to be in a position, where I have to gobble up my pride and admit that I did something stupid. While there are certain events, that I in retrospect consider stupid, they were not really that dangerous to my health, or the health of others. Nevertheless, I would certainly not do things again the same way. The more you know, the more you care. Best wishes and a happy new year 2023, Erik.

My lifetime fear is losing my sight. I am 67 and still do not wear glasses or need them, but I am sure I am getting closer. Safety glasses , yes. So glad you came out of this ok. It is good to be shown and reminded of safety. Stay safe man. 🙂
