  • Lisboa is a game about the reconstruction of Lisboa after the great earthquake of 1755. It's also another Vital Lacerda title which means it's going to be extremely heavy, but also extremely thematic.
Could it be another addition to my collection alongside his other games? Will the historical based theme put me off or will the game's mechanics save it? Where does it fit alongside my other Lacerda games?

Dont like the theme? Wine, art, or helping rebuild a city after a catastrophe? Come on, be the hero and help rebuild the city!

I am absolutely no history buff but this is still my number 1 game! I think just the obscureness of the theme appeals to me and this is my favorite theme of all his games.

I really enjoyed your review quite a lot, I do disagree with a few points :) but hey!! you did mention its subjective. I am so glad you did not have robotic gameplay run through and review after that, this format was really nice to listen to.
As an artist I love Lisboa and as a history enthusiast I love Lisboa - probably my favourite game of Vital's, have not played Kanban yet. As much as I adore the art, I do agree that it can be quite difficult to find icons when you first lay it out until your brain decipher the patterns.
Oh! BTW at 20:38 about collecting those rubble cubes make thematic sense if you read about Gaiola Pombalina (I know you mentioned you don't care for the theme), however, its like you are rebuilding the devastated city with the rubble adding more space to your portfolio and warehouse. And about the buildings being build in the rows and column is also mentioned where in the rulebook, where Vital as designed it so it simulates the redesign of Maia and other architect's plans.

Thanks for the video Luke. One (hopefully helpful) tip. Check your audio bit rate and camera bit rate are the same. There’s a lot of distracting audio drift that suggests one is recording at 48hz and the other at 44hz. Could also be an NLE project setting needs to be adjusted.

.............riiiiiiiiight..........heehee my audio tech knowledge is limited. But I'll have a look at my Audacity settings for the audio and the camera audio/video settings and see if I can find the hz rates.

Luke Hector if you’re recording direct to camera it will be a project issue in your editor (I used to have Premier import at the wrong rate, so I’d then have to tell the software it was the actual rate - most cams these days use 48hz). If you’re recording onto a separate audio recorder just set it to the same rate as your cam. You can find out what rate your cam is using by checking the file properties while it’s in your editor. If the two use the same rate the problem goes away. Sorry if it seems I’m spamming you today! I’ve just been at home poorly and filling my boots watching your vids. Keep it up Luke! I like listening to your musings.

Can't see anything in editor (it's not the most comprehensive around) however I did notice that Audacity was set to 44100hz - now changed to 48000hz. Next time i record a video I'll check out what the cam was recording at.

Someone will find this TH-cam thread in a Google search eight years from now and it will solve their issue

I really enjoyed this one. It didn't take that long to play, really. We were playing it in Lisbon though...
Still like Vinhos better. This might be tougher to teach, but it is definitely lighter than Vinhos and you can kind of decide if you want to trigger the end game faster or not. I get what you are saying about the theme. Even me who am born and raised in Lisbon look at parts of the game as mechanics rather than theme. That said, it plays really smooth and since it's a bit sandboxy there's a lot of ways to approach the game. I actually think that 3 is the sweetspot for this one.
One other thing, as far as board games go, this is a work of art and it's worth having in a collection just for the sheer looks.

hey, do you have reviews for vinhos, the gallerist, or kanban? i am very interested in hearing your opinion of them.

      Hi Sal!
I do indeed but not on video format. The Gallerist and Vinhos Deluxe 2016 can be found on my official blog page as written reviews. Simply type in The Broken Meeple in Google Search, you should find it fine. There is a search box where you can type in a keyword to search for earlier reviews including all 3 of those games.
Kanban however was during a phase when I experimented with audio reviews on my podcast. I only did it for about 10 episodes max as I never felt it really kicked off. Kanban was one of those reviews. So if you don't mind listening to it in audio form, you can also find that on my blog page.
      Hope that helps!

New to board gaming with my wife. Really enjoy your detailed review. In 2022 this is now around 125$ where I live. I’m considering this for Christmas or on Mars. What would you recommend? My wife and I are playing dune imperium daily and looking for something deeper but with such a steep price tag we just want to make sure we are making a good choice.

Both games are a significant step up from DI in terms of rules overhead and complexity, especially On Mars. Out of those two I say Lisboa but even then I'd first consider Gallerist or Kanban.

When it comes to two-players games, which would you recommend trying in addition to Kanban?

If we are just talking Vital Lacerda then Gallerist and Lisboa both work well at just two.

But do you care about the history?

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Enough to know what the game is about, but not much further than that. Certainly when playing the game, it's far more of a mechanical machine, then a thematic experience.
