OAK WALKING STICK - carving a Celtic Weave

- Welcome back! Here is an Oak Walking Stick with a Celtic weave pattern. The oak was more difficult to carve due to it being a hard wood and it chipped a bit more but with some patience and careful planning, the carving came out looking great. The stick was stained dark with an oil based stain and finished with a paste wax. I really enjoyed this carving, never carved oak before but it came out looking fantastic, sharp lines and the grain pattern stands out with the stain. Overall a great walking stick. you are very welcome... most of the time it is easy, its just putting in the 20-30 hours to complete it that most have problems with. But I'm happy to help any way I can

thank you! Yes, always been hesitant of oak due to the chip outs but it was ok, and the end results impressed me. Made a very strong stick that looks good.

I was thinking I wanted to try my hand at making a walking sticks but I don’t have any of those cool tools, beautiful work.
@@ChoneyNation you can make one with a rasp, a knife and a saw. The cool tools are nice and make things quicker but you can definitely make something with a few hand tools

No, I never have... I've seen it but its a little too random in the pattern for my liking. I love symmetry and patterns!

Where do you source your wood? Do you find it and shape it with a draw knife or do you buy the blanks? I am just getting into walking stick carving and am not sure if I should be looking for small straight sapplings or 30 ft. trees with sizeable trunks that I shape down. Part of the fun for me is the hike for the tree that calls to me. Thanks!
I usually find downed branches in the woods, I don’t like to cut live trees for my sticks. For this Celtic weave stick I laminated two 1x2” oak boards together and shaped them down. Hope that helps.

Howdy howdy! In the video, at the 1:52 mark, I see three large diameter sticks that are a wee bit crooked. I have such a stick and trying to figure out how to get from said bent stick to the nice straight stick you are working with. (My stick is a fallen oak branch that was roitting on the outside, but I cleaned it up and have about a 2+ inch oak stick with lovely grain, but to bent to work on easily, Seems like the ones you have in back. What do you do with those? Will subscribe and pray for another video!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I usually try and work with the bends, try to carve a wood spirit face into the curve or bend. Or try and use the bend to form the handle section. If the diameter is large enough, then you can carve the stick straight while getting down to the final size. But don’t be turned off by the bent sticks, it’s more natural and they turn into something different and beautiful.

Not sure which lines your are asking about... The main diagonal lines are done with the grid pattern. Then I measured out either 1/4" or 1/2" from the centre lines. The thickness of the weave can be adjusted to your taste

Great video, at the 4:40 timeline you are marking the centerline in a dimension you did not talk about, how did you arrive at the interval?
Thanks for watching... I just marked them at 1" intervals... a completely variable amount but this allowed the pattern to be more or less square. But you can vary this value and either stretch out the "diamond" pattern along the length or shorten it by decreasing this spacing.

I very much like your walking stick. The ornamentation is phenomenal. Still, I miss one feature. I don't know the proper English word, but look at the ring grooves on both side of the handle. Norwegian walking sticks tend to have two similar rings with a distance of a coupple of inches at the bottom. We're using this to attach tools to the stick. This could be a sport saw, a crooked little branch or a knife, to cut down/weigh down items from a tree
