S800 Sky Shadow FPV wing from Banggood (flight test and summary)

  • This S800 Sky Shadow wing from Banggood flies very nicely indeed and the stabilization system really does make a difference. Here's a summary of the pros and cons:
    Pros:
    - excellent flight characteristics
    - tough EPP foam
    - a good price (aka: cheap)
    - PNF kit contains most stuff you'll need
    Cons:
    - ESC appears to be junk (I'm not the only one grizzling)
    - servos are perhaps a little light for the job (gears)
    - FPV transmitter was faulty out of the box
    - the el-cheapo camera supplied is not worth using (I used the Runcam Eagle instead)
    - the fit of the molded foam parts could be better
    - the build does require quite a bit of soldering and extra wire and you'll need tools like a drill (2mm), sandpaper, glue and more tools than normally required for a PNF.
    - instructions could be a lot better.
    Bottom line:
    This little wing really honks on 4S and I'm sure that once I put a decent ESC in it that I'll be flying it a lot. Would I buy the PNF version?
    Maybe.
    You do get a hell of a lot of stuff for the $30 more than you pay for the basic airframe -- although the quality of these parts is questionable.
    Go check out the PNF version then look at the ARF version and decide for yourself which would represent better value to you.
    Setup of the model flown in this video:
    - FrSky D4RII receiver
    - Multistar 4S/1400 mAH battery
    - Runcam Eagle FPV camera
    - ESC, servos, motor and stabilizer as supplied

    Hey, thanks for showing the maiden, i was curious. Kinda relieved now that I'm not the only slow builder. Will see if my esc is crap as well, at least my motor sounds good. Greets, Mario

    I went for the KIT. I nearly ALWAYS do. That way you can put decent electrics that you KNOW will work because you have used them in other crafts. Mine is all glued together & is awaiting the electrics & FPV gear. I should get those fitted this weekend as it's not flying weather here in the UK. Although today isn't bad, but I've got other stuff to do today!

    My PnP just arrived and the ESC is marked 30A. Fingers crossed it and the motor are OK. With hindsight I should have gone with the kit. I won't be using the supplied stabiliser with iNAV available.

    Yep issues with mine were the VTX blew within minutes, and FC felt like it hindered the plane, launching felt it didnt have enough movement for the first 1-2 seconds, then was fine.
    Flew without the stability and it felt solid anyway, so might just get rid, definitely better getting the kit!

    Your video has convinced me to buy something yet again Bruce 😄
    I've ordered one and just had confirmation that it's in the mail towards the Netherlands. Can't wait to build it. I'm a big fan of Teksumos because of the EPP so I had to get my hands on one of these too. These seem to be a great step ahead of the Teksumo and Bonsai

    Thankyou for the honest review. I seriously hate the reviews that cover up the faults. Banggood only puts positive reviews on their site,if people do complain,they always say to contact them to get it resolved but no one ever says wether or not it was. I can say I got a quad from them with a faulty transmitter and they sent me a replacement one,and it didnt take that long. They do ask for a video showing the issue and a copy of the shipping label. For me it was showing the batterys were new,installed correctly and nothing happening when it was switched on. You shouldnt have any problem getting them to send replacement ESC except thats probably not going to help,that and the crappy motor. I would just ask for a refund and destroy that one if thats what they wanted. I sure wouldnt invest in it then find out everything on it is crap.I could build a Flite Test model with my own parts better than that,and so can you. I have a limit on what I spend with places like Banggood. That thing would be over that limit.

    Rather than drilling servo arms I've used increasing sized torx bits as a hand reamer, should only need two sizes and the plastic seems to get out of the way pretty well. Can be done in the field easier than driling.

    Stick with it Bruce, I left my wings removable for the same reason, stick it in the Bonneville's panniers and fly a little UrbexFPV. damn thing can take a real hit too. PS my wife was watching this with me and said to tell you you have the neatest, best groomed beard. (mine is more Gandalf!).

    I used a bottom emax 2300kv 2205 motor with some metal gear emax 9g servos, a 2200 3s and a 5045 (nonbullnose) props and its good. Btw for some reason it has less power with a bull nose prop so just use a normal one, although the bullnose prop is quieter. Needs some fpv gear in the front to balance though. I'm using an opto esc so I used the included 5v bec wich works great to power the servos and receiver.

    Hi Bruce, i have built the S800, but I am wondering how to put in the VTX in: with controls facing down so buttons and switches are accessible via the carbon cover openings, or heatsink facing down for max cooling through the cover openings. What are your thoughts? I prefer the first for practicality, but does the VTX loose enough heat when the heatsink is wing-body facing? Thanks.

  • @bartsshorts
    @bartsshorts 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    i thought of a idea how to confirm that air is indeed going through the vtx vent and out the ant hole above. simply put some flour or other powder in the vtx area, and have a camera on the cg fuselage set sideways to see it come out the gap around said antenna.

    • @FPV-wi8fw
      @FPV-wi8fw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      plane escs are designed to cope better with sustained high throttle (I think?). quad escs are designed for short bursts

    • @j3fron
      @j3fron 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hanelyp1 but not with sudden throttle up with std esc
      if you use correct setting in mini quad escs, you wont get any power out inflight
      just disable dshot or oneshot,
      and use correct demag settings
      mini quad esc with bl hel fw are easy to set up than std one

    Use a different prop. Those bull nose always heat up my motors when I push them. The fuselage is disturbing the air, making it turbulent, resulting in even more for the prop to cut through.

  • @knight907
    @knight907 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You said sometimes a fixed-wing ESC is better than a mini quad ESC on planes. Why is that? If you meant that this needs a 30A instead of a 20A then I get it, but otherwise I don't understand why it would matter. Could you please explain?

    • @j3fron
      @j3fron 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Knight yeah i agree with ya
      i prefer mini quad esc as they so small and very light weight with same rate amps
      easier to adjust and more importantly it wont freeze up the motor in middle of sky
      i guess bruce using 25a esc is too small rate for those bullnose props
      bullnose props are so inefficient so 25a is not enough and of course that 25a esc got power out because its too hot
      that bullnose props can draw about 32amps with 2205 2400kv motors

    it's so damn light with mini one

      wallaguest1 with the mottor off it will be alright even if pointing 90° from the fuselage. It can be snapped by catching a rock or something while touch-down but it's unlikely.

      You can use a few runs of fiberglass tape along the wing and then cover it in laminating film. This toughens them up immensely. Did this with my Bonsai and it's survived horrendous abuse.

    I'm actually having problems with my stabilizer on the sky shadow. If I have set up the wing as a elevon model in my TX could this be why the stabilizer is not moving the surfaces properly? Whenever the stabilizer is on, and I tip the nose down only one elevon reacts the correct way and when I tip one of the wingtips down then the other elevon is the only one to react. Any tips or suggestions to get it sorted, will be greatly appreciated! As of now I'm only flying the wing with the stabilizer off.

    • @RCModelReviews
      @RCModelReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes.. remove the mixing in your transmitter and make sure the board is set to "DELTA" with the little dipswitches. From memory it's just one switch ON and the others off. If you use mixing in your transmitter then only one elevon will actually move very much when it tries to stabilize itself.

      RCModelReviews Awesome! I'm so glad you mentioned that in the video. I have been stumped for 2 weeks, wandering why the elevons wouldn't cooperate with me. lol Thanks Bruce! And yes it's just the top dip switch that needs to be on, for delta mixing.

      Yeah, the airframe and the stabilization board are great -- but there are too man other "cheap bits" in the PNF version. On reflection, the PNF is probably worth it for the airframe and the stabilizer -- you can toss the rest of it and still have a great-value little wing.
