Homemade Evaporative Cooler! - "whole room" Super Cooler! - up to 30F drop! - Easy DIY

  • Homemade Evaporative Air Cooler. Easy DIY. This "large area" SUPER Cooler is capable of cooling multiple rooms (up to 30F lower than the initial "room temperature"). Designed to be used with a standard 20" box fan. Run-time: 6-10 hours per fill-up (holds 3 gallons). all supplies are easily found at the home stores. notes on construction: wood used; one 10 foot 2x3 (99.75" in total). twelve 2 1/2" wood screws. one heavy duty "CoolPad Ice" all season cooler pad. one roll (2ft by 5ft) of metal screen, called "hardware cloth". 5/8" vinyl tubing (1/2" internal diameter). 200GPH fountain pump (from harbor freight). one 2' long piece of pvc pipe (1/2" diameter). assorted pvc connectors. 1/8" drill bit for water holes. 7/8" spade bit to cut hole at top of wooden braces. one 24" long window box (7" high) from walmart. lastly, works best in semi-dry and dry climates *the drier the climate the better it performs - also, for best results, use a strong/powerful fan. tip: to dry out the cooler pad do not remove it. just shut off water pump and let fan run. it should be completely dry in 15 to 20 mins. only remove cooler pad when replacing it (once or twice a year - if you use heavy duty one). you may need to use some pvc pipe cement if there are any leaks (on non-threaded connections). it's only about $4 a bottle. (i didn't need to use it.) you may need to use teflon tape on any connector that is threaded and leaking. cooler is totally self-contained and area around cooler stays completely dry. (ran it all day for 3 days and observed no water at all outside of the air cooler). additional video footage w/extra info.     Next you should fit a 5 gallon water jug upside down that will let water out as the level goes down like a dog watering bowl does. Then you could leave it on for 10-12 hours when you are not home and your house will be cool when you come home. Pretty cool setup there.

    opposed to the negative comments. this is great idea. works just as well. the only difference is not paying from 500-800 for a swamp cooler. Great job.

    This is a great idea. About the only things I would do differently is paint all the wood in some sort of sealant so that it doesn't get moldy. I would also put a pvc pipe at the bottom to hold the cooler pad in. Then I would add hinge at the top under the pipe where the water comes in and clasp at the other end. That way you could pinch the pad in between the two pipes instead of having to put that much wire on it to hold the pad up.

    Humidity stays above 50% where I am and once I was seeing how much energy I could save by hanging my washed clothes throughout the house instead of using the dryer (lived in a condo, couldn't hang them outside) and something I needed faster than the others I decided to put in front of the fan in my bedroom where I was to dry faster. It got cool in there!
    So I have no doubt evaporative cooling works.

      50% humidity is rather low compared to where I live. Try 80-90%. Even at 70-75%, which is considered good for the area, the air is to wet and unable to absorb any moisture.

      You ideally want to use evaporative cooling when the humidity is 35% or less. The drier the air is, the more effective it is and the lower the air temperature. Also, you ideally want to have your evaporative cooler in your window to take hotter drier air from outside your house as its more effective than cooler more humid air in your house as soon in this video

    Very nice. Brings back memories. I had a greenhouse. Made a large version of this on the back wall with a toilet tank to hold the water. Left the float valve and plumbed it up. That way it would stay full. Water came in through the top like yours and into a PVC gutter on the bottom then back to the toilet tank. Fan was on the other end of the greenhouse. Nice simple technology but won't work for a house here in the south with already high humidity. Mold would be a big problem.

    for me I sealed the sides with aluminum tape and made a cap for the top to ensure air flow from the back. also, I suggest cutting the pad about a half inch wider on each side because once the pad gets saturated it weighs down and the sides come in. I put ice in my water and it also made a difference in temp output. something else you might want to suggest, treat the wood with something to waterproof it or it will expand, crack and mildew over time. works great thanks for the video!

    I have seen many of these videos, sometimes just getting lost in the "WTF are they doing" mentality but this sir, THIS IS FREAKING GENIUS!
    I cannot wait to get home and build a smaller version just for my sons' bedrooms. The amount of heat that my one child's PC puts out when he's gaming is a bit insane, old GTX 660 GPU, and his fan just moves hot air. Now I can build a mini version of this device and I can still keep the whole house A/C set to a reasonable level to save energy.

    finally a inside water cooler or otherwise known as a swamp cooler . I'm in my 60's and grew up with one of these in our window except it used a squirrel cage blower and water drained down on three sides .

    Thanks for sharing this! I got mine down to 52 degrees F. Of course with blocks of ice in a large igloo cooler.I put the fan instead behind the contraption so that the fan blows through my aspen pad.
    You could also trying putting a second box fan to draw the air as you have it set up here, for even colder air with better circulation.
    I've tried the coil method and the cooler elbow air conditioner :| This Evap is by far the BEST! 52 F even in high humidity!

    Costs money to generate ice cubes with the fridge but with those extra hot days you can dump a bunch of ice cubes into the container and supercool that bad boy. Good job

    Through a filter in front and you have an air cleaner as well - plus its keeps the works clean. Also its a humidifier at slow speeds - cool video!

    Might want to put a water proof/water resistant finish on the wood parts. Also use distilled water if you have hard water locally. Distilled water will keep the pad from getting clogged up with lime deposits.
    You'll also want to drain and clean the cooler occasionally or put in some anti-bacterial additive. Otherwise the tank, pump, tubing and pad will start to have things growing on/in them.

    We have this exact thing on the roof of my factory its called a cooling tower,ours cools 19 injection molder's water supply to 65 on a 95 degree day.bravo essentially u have built a cooling tower and now i see it works this small im building a couple for my house too thanks great build and vid

    I used to live in Southern Nevada and we had a swamp cooler worked great most days. On the ones it did'nt I would add ice to the water and rubbing alcohol it mixes well in water and helps the evaporation process.

      You might consider using 1/2gl. milk jugs filled with ice..I don't have nearly as well a system design ( aluminum pie plates in front of a fan) but they can easily be re-frozen in the freezer and recirculated with others

    If I lived in Arizona I would make one of these in a heartbeat. Sadly, Florida air is usually saturated with moisture, so evap cooling would probably not yield much of a temperature difference. Nice setup though!

    The standard freezer side of a refrigerator could also be used as a water chiller if you did not mind drilling a small hole into the freezer wall for the copper tubing coil line to go into the freezer. Silicone could be used to seal any air gap around the edges of the hole on the inside and outside of the freezer wall. You would have to sacrifice some food storage depending upon how big you wanted the copper coil line to be. The water pump would have to have a good rate of flow also depending upon how long the water line was. This would be A LOT better than continually dumping ice into the reservoir. When you turned the fan off you would also need to purge the copper water line of any water to keep it from freezing inside the copper coil inside the freezer. I've seen this set up done with hydroponics for people that needed a water chiller but didn't want to pay for an expensive water chiller but it would also work with a swamp cooler. If you wanted to get the air blowing as cold as you could and as cheap as you could, this would be the way to go.

      I live in FL too, but many of the comments said this will not work in the high humid areas. Did you make one and if so, what has your result been? I'm curious to know if it will work here in FL. It has been terribly hot (94 lately) but also VERY humid and that is what makes it so uncomfortable.

      There are a number of different ideas that work on TH-cam. Expense is one thing , area to cover is another, difficultly to make is another. If it's just a room your looking at then the cooler with ice will work fine freezing your water the night before.

      Little more info Pamela. Apparently to do one of these to RECYCLE your room air will tend to increase the humidity in your room or house. Eventually making it very muggy. If you use the mesh in front of a window pulling outside air in through the water soaked filter but with a whole house fan it will eliminate the humidity problem. Cost at about 13 or 14 dollars a month on the electric.

    Such a great job, remember living in the Las Vegas NV and the swamp cooler worked under the same principal and cooled the whole house. Now I'm in the Philippines retired and will build your project, just need to find the supplies here.

    I like this version. Years ago, I lived in an older mobile home, it had a cooler on the
    roof that appeared to be just a blower fan and a water tub, never could figure out
    how it cooled, but that thing did put out some cold air. I did some research found it's
    called a "swamp cooler". I'm gonna do your build, cause I think it would do well
    off grid using a 12 volt system, Thanks

    Nice job, some possible suggestions for future improvements might be to have the two mesh pieces much closer together and openable (hinge at the top maybe) so they grip the cooling mat removing the need to attach the pad directly to the hose. This design looks like it might be hard to clean the evaporative cooling mat, and it will collect a lot of dust fairly quickly.

      You could put an ac filter on the backside to collect dust. That's be alot easier to clean/replace at the cost of a little airflow.

    I agree with the previous post--it's probably commercial pushback. If you did the unit with solar-powered water pumps and a solar-powered box fan, you could avoid the use of any house current at all (both available on Amazon or Ebay).

    Nice work, I like the other models you made with the copper coil because it isolated the water from the air flow which is better for more humid environments. This design with the cooling pad would only be practical in very dry areas of the world.

    Don't let anyone tell you evaporative cooling doesn't work in high humidity in the south...It Does. Southeast Texas Gulf Coast...temp 85, humidity 83...blowing cold air.
    Built it for Hurricane season...for no power. We were without power for 6 weeks after Hurricane Rita in 2005...The heat was unbearable. I believe at 90%+ humidity (after a rain), it'll lose some efficiency but still work to some degree. We experience high pressure systems quite often here where the humidity drops to 30, 40 and 50%...it should blow even colder. I don't believe it'll work well in early morning hours when the humidity is climbing and it's damp outside. Plan to use in afternoon and early evening. Thanks for the build video...it works great...even in the south.

      we run one when the temps hits triple digits and saves us so much money on electric bill but ours is on the roof lol and bigger

    Excellent ..I'm wondering about using light walled aluminium channel for the frame. It would also allow the pvc pipe to be hidden inside.

    well done, instead of the cool pad you used, you can use hay and it even produces colder air.
