I'm using Yamaha HS5's. Ive had them so long I'm scared I wont be able to mix if I change them out haha. I feel like a well treated space is most of the battle. Nice monitors obviously take a good room to the next level. I would like to keep my Yamaha's but have a bigger set of mains that are a little more flattering/full-range. People don't like hearing their stuff through small 5" monitors.

I have been using Roland DS-90A speakers. I have been working on a 4-room studio (double walls, double doors, double windows isolated, etc) for several years now and approaching completion lsoon (shout out to John Sayers studio design forum). I mounted my Roand speakers in a farfield setup (speakers imbedded into a front soffit area and are flush with the wall). I am well into the control room acoustic treatment phase now. The Rolands are front ported, which is necessary with a soffit-mounted speaker arrangement.
The problem is that these speakers are 23 years old and one of the tweeters blew up and it's impossible to find replacement parts, since they are not built any more. That's why I'm so interested in these ADAM A7X speakers: Front ported, power switch on front and up to -6dB LF roll off which is usually needed in soffit mounted setups. They are also pretty close to the same size of the Rolands, which means that I may not have to rebuild the assembly that suspends them all over again (hard to describe).

@@andersmccormack Hi Anders, we are so sorry that you've had such a negative experience with our brand in the past. We can assure you that not every review comes with free speakers.. many times it's a simple demo pair that they get for a limited time and send them back to us. We've never asked any reviewer to say nice things about our monitors, and only give their personal preference.
We'd love to reach out and talk to you either in person or over the phone to get these issues straightened out and see if there is anything we can do to make sure that these problems don't happen again.

Awesome. I bought a set of “modded” HS8’s from ZenPro Audio. IMO (and I listened to everything under $4k) - they are the most open, extended monitors I’ve ever heard. All the buzz words. Best explanation is it sounds like you are mixing in an arena of headroom. It’s not even the same monitor after the mod. Completely smooth top, and another octave down, sides spread out after one week of break-in. It’s almost the same experience you hear from people who upgrade to a high end DAC like the Burl or the Solaris. To anyone looking for the best budget monitors, you absolutely have to hear them.
The only place i would want to go from here would be ATC 45’s.

Last year was Barefoot MM27, now they've been replaced with Adam S3H. I still own a pair of Klein and Hummel O300D and as much as I love them, the Adams make them sound like a bowl of warm applesauce. The S3H has so much headroom, they're so fast, and so loud, they're actually frightening. I have a pair of Dunlavy SC-IVA that are some of the most accurate speakers on Earth, and the Adams keep up that level of transient detail in a more pleasant way. I'm fairly obsessed.

@@AndrewMasters They're nutty! If I was gonna do it again, I'd probably get the S3V to make placement a little easier in a small room. I also run the Adams crossed over with subs, and the whole system is tuned, which IMO is the only way to get TRULY accurate low end.
But yeah, if you ever go for 3 ways, check out the Adams. ATC style mid-range and silky smooth top end. I just love em

    a) I use passive KRK6000 with the original tweeters that are super bright and I love them - they show all the good mastered songs to be pleasant and never harsh. If they are - they werent mastered right. So I always get crisp enough highs, but sometimes clients want tracks brighter which leads me to think they are using dull monitors/listening equipment. These go through the rare british QUAD306 amplifier and sound amazing. They also have a modified bottom cone of PMC speakers. Thats the way I got em and I use them. They tend to go well with my 10" subwoofer that extends the low end and pretty much covers the area where those roll off at the LF. b) I got a pair of FOCAL SHAPE TWINs and they're pretty good, however they sound very dull compared to the KRK6000s and I want to upgrade to ADAM A7X. Also these FOCALs have sideports and I have 2 sets of speakers so they kinda need to be set apart or further away and not in my listening environment. P.S: In the past I used to have: M-Audio XB8 as my first monitors ever, then MACKIE HR824mk2, YAMAHA HS80M, YAMAHA NS10 and I own another pair of modified KRK6000s waiting on me in a diff geographical location - modded with FOCAL tweeters and cones, through a PEAVEY CS200x amplifier. 5:34 bro watch out for having the HDDs next to a magnetic thing such as of in the speakers. I also use a docking station similar to your but I put it further away!

The Adams are amazing. I use KRK VXT4 reference monitors. The Adams are a tad sweeter than the VXTs. My next monitors are gonna be the A77Xs.
Some people like the harsh sound of the Yamahas and while I have been considering getting those I realized that it would be better to get better monitors and when the budget allows get some harsh speakers like the Yamaha HS range.
I am not sure what the fascination is with harsh speakers that are brutally honest when you can get good speakers that are very musical and allow you to work longer on your mixes without the ear fatigue.

I first had the A7's and had lots of issues with them dying on me--I think I went thru 3 A7's and one A7X. The speakers sound great and I used them over 6-7 years and they have improved their builds and customer service post 2015. My issue with them is they did not ever translate well to how the music sounded on all the other sources I knew well. I'm now mostly having to mix on Head phones and it was a lucky break in the sense that I found the Beyer Dynamic DT 770 Pro's and they're the most honest monitoring source I've used yet!! I have a set of the smallest Genelec's and they put out a lot for the size but I've yet to really mix anything on them as I need to better acoustically treat my room. Sounds like you're going a lot further with working the A7X's into your environment then I did so you'll get a better impression of your mixes.

I use Adam A7Xs with the Sub8, I use it through my computers sound card which is interfaced with M-Audio M-Track 2x2M audio interface. It is my computer monitors, but I mainly use it for sound with my Kawai VPC1, and I play the VI Labs - Ravencroft 275, 9 foot grand piano, with titanium strings. I use DYI audio sound absorption panels, with a DIY sound diffusor on the back wall. Planning to make DIY corner bass traps with charcoal in tubes, covered with sound absorption panels. The A7X and Sub8 have the frequency range I require for piano sound reproduction. For the size of the room I use they can be overpowering, but a suitable sound levels, they are a dream. I got reboxed speakers at Long and McQuade, and have had the speakers for 6 years. I used pink noise to burn the speakers in before using. Then I played various genre of music after burn in.

I've had several Adam monitors. A7X, T7V, ARTist 5s. Now I have a pair of EVE (created by former Adam CEO) SC208s paired with two 12" subs.
Love the AMT tweeters from companies like Adam, Eve, and HEDD, though they each have differences.
I did upgrade from the Adam A7Xs to Eve SC208s and was surprised by how little of a difference going back to rear bass ports made. I think the front bass ports matter if the speakers are VERY close to a wall (within a few inches) but once there's close to a foot of distance or more, it made little difference for me.

The SC208 has deeper bass and a smoother top end. It also has a higher bass response than the Adam A8X. I am still deciding between ADAM A7X and Dynaudio LYD8
    as you mentioned
    Pros for Adam
    -front power switch
    -front volume knob
    -front bass ports
Cons for Adam (consistent across many reviews)
-bass is not low enough, thus it requires sub
    -midrange scoop
    -Not true 7" woofer
    Pros for LYD 8
    -auto power/sleep
-consistent sound throughout the volume range
-Class D amps (power savings, emit less heat)
    -deeper bass
-flatter curve (especially in the mids)
    -can be used without sub.
    Cons
    -more expensive
-may have less warranty (Adam has 5 years if you register your product. I can't find how long the warranty is for powered speakers/studio monitors in Dynaudio webpage. Their 8 year warranty is for passive speakers)
    -much larger.
    -cheap MDF cabinet? (subjective)
    -bass extension mode isn't good.
    -rear bass port.
