A game like Helldivers 2 shows that even the oversaturated live service genre can actually craft a W when real world politics and DEI is left out and the player base is respected. Austin is quickly becoming San Francisco 2.0 and the woke mind virus runs rampant in that town. MS did the industry a favor in shutting it down
If making a fan-praised GOTY contender with zero marketing like Hi-Fi Rush can't save a studio, WHAT CAN? Time and time again it feels like success isn't enough anymore. Selling a few millions of copies aren't enough, they want DOZENS of millions. When rumors drift around about games like *Spider-Man 2* aren't selling enough to make higher-ups happy, it feels like we're watching the gaming industry starting to eat itself chasing impossible infinity "money number go up" fantasies.
Gaming industry isn't eating itself, gaming corporation upper management is. As long as talented people have the balls to take less pay and go to smaller studios that don't have shareholders, and realize being under corporate control offers zero benefit, they'll be fine.

They made Prey (2017), and it’s one of my favorite games of all time. It’s an incredible immersive sim and there’s no game quite like it. I believe they also developed Dishonored which is also widely accepted as a great franchise. Redfall was a game the developers truly did not want to make, was poorly managed, but ultimately stands as a testament that games as a service is the riskiest gamble publishers will take, and the developers will take all the consequences while the hire ups will who made all the shit decisions get to keep their jobs.
Them closing Tango Gameworks is gonna bite them. It's so weird how they tried so hard to get into Japan,, and now they closed their only Japanese studio....
-Get renowned studio with massive experience in a particular single player genre to make a multiplayer live service looter shooter. -It fails catastrophically, studio loses both experienced old staff and enthusiastic new staff as well as tons of money. -Game is kept on life support for max a year before further development is quietly canceled. -Process repeats with another studio. We cant keep doing this man, its such a profound waste on every level.
We need The Evil Within to make sure Capcom don't slack their Resident Evil games. Having both games are just fantastic. HiFi Rush too, that's one game I'd say worth a sequel. I wasn't an anti Phil Spencer guy before... but now... F**king snake.

@@Foxfire_forty-ninedepends on the game and if it’s deserving of a sequel from a narrative perspective, in my opinion. @Kristyybug eh the game needed to be shut down yes. But purge the entire team? It seems like it was more of a leadership issue. It sucks that the devs have to take the fall for it, especially when there was 70% turnover and the new folks were following shitty orders. That's harsh.

The biggest disgrace in the whole situation is shutting down of Tango. Roundhouse and Austin will have their staff moved to different studios. But nothing is known about Tango. Why them? Even 343 is being allowed to roam freely. It's unfair ffs
Tango has lost some higher ups over the last few years including the founder. Wouldn’t be surprised if that was causing issues on what to do for future games.

Roundhouse despite being direct continuation of Human Heads had nothing in common with the studio that gave us OG Prey so them being absorbed into Zenimax Online is just a nothing burger.
Phil Spencer’s been pretty crappy but I really appreciate how he’s emphasized game pass, backwards compatability I really enjoy those features. He’s just not very ambitious when it comes to anything else.
You say that now but I guarantee you whoever replaces Phil Spencer would be so much worse. There's no end of wannabe Bobby Koticks looking to suck the industry dry and enshittify it.
A lot of hate for 343, but Halo Infinite is, by far, their best game. It’s a lot of fun. I’d give them another chance after that. Sure there’s the co-op fiasco and other features they messed up with. I can’t say much for the multiplayer. It’s decent (beats the hell out of COD), but not enough to keep me playing. Halo MCC is also fantastic. Bungie does nothing but ride out Destiny 2 these days. Maybe give Halo to MachineGames if it came down to it.
@@CyraXFactor So the game is fun but not enough to keep you playing? If that's the best 343 has to offer after nearly a decade of halo titles then you've already dug a hole for them.

They were so much more than that. Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Killer instinct Gold, Blast Corps, etc. They were one of the most elite companies in the industry, period.
Rare and Nintendo were magical during the SNES and N64. Hell, aside from Nintendo, Rare was the only consistent developer for the N64. It was a sad day when MS bought them out. Nintendo should have and they didn't.

At the end of the day, he's still a suit trying to get as much money as possible. Everyone can sit there and say he gets the gaming community, but he doesn't. He'll sell every xbox customer down the river if it means a .25% increase in their stock portfolio, and he'll burn every studio to the ground if they don't make bank with a release.
The corporate obsession with live service games has been a plague on the industry. So many companies destroyed their own talented studios by demanding they chase the dream of infinite cash in these games with no thought whatsoever of if it would ever produce a quality product. All just to thrill shareholders and give executives bigger bonuses while the people with talent all go down with the ship when these soulless games inevitably fail.
@@Foxfire_forty-nine ... and its not as if Helldivers 2 is the diamond in the rough of live service games; nor is it as if it has been involved in any live service related scandals recently.... Oh wait; both of those are true.
Ah, yes, now Microsoft has every excuse to dissolve Arkane Studios, a FANTASTIC studio that's made a good bundle of serious gems. (Fuck man, I still play Arx Fatalis every now and then) Arkane was working on 25% staff, because of the 101 employees, 76 of them left when they were informed they'd be making a live-service shooter. Nobody wanted to make Red Fall. It's a shame that Arkane will be closed, but to be fair, Arkane as we knew them has long been gone for a couple of years now, and are working for other studios. Edit: Kept saying "Arkane will be shut down" but really I meant the Austin division and kept repeating the mistake.
Well, by that point they'd already made Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider, which were middling and bad respectively. The studio was already on a downward spiral and Redfall was just the nail in the coffin, pun intended.
Like he said in the video, 70% (more by now) of the people that made Prey are gone. The magic is gone, same as Bioware, same as Blizzard, same as Bethesda, same as a lot of places, sadly
@@WhiteManOnCampus I wholeheartedly love that entire series mate, no complaints. Dishonored 2 was collectively celebrated (yes it had performance issues) as a fantastic sequel, full-stop. Like, every outlet called it fantastic, and "best cyberpunk game of X." I was there mate. So you don't like the direction Dishonored took. That's a shame. Prey was also a fucking complete storytelling masterpiece, and came out years later. Mooncrash was great DLC. My thoughts differ.
My heart almost dropped when I saw Tango Gameworks on the chopping block. My brain can't comprehend why they'd kill that studio. It dosen't make sense!!
Mikami the founder of the studio left wouldn’t be shocked if a lot of long term staff that like working for him went with him to his new studio which left Tango in a tough spot to move forward.
I'm devastated by the closure of Tango. Hi Fi Rush is one of my all-time favorite games and to see their studio get shut down for absolutely no fault of their own is gutting.
Same thing happened to Tango. People look at them and say oh how can Microsoft axe them. But they don't know that like Arkane Austin a lot of Senior Devs at Tango, even Disciple of Shinji, the founder of the Studio, left the Studio during Ghostwire because they wanted to make Horror games, not some Ubisoft like Game. After Ghostwire Tango released a Mobile Gacha game which many don't know about. It flopped of course and then came Hi Fi Rush. It is very likely that Tango lacked a proper Vision and devs to even make Evil Within 3. There was no vision. And with ABK buyout there are many studios who would be willing to try making Evil Within 3 and Hi Fi Rush 2 there, so they just dissolved the Tango and will give its IPs to others.
I will keep saying it. Hi-Fi Rush is the best game that came out of Xbox in over a decade. Tango Gameworks do not deserve this BS. I blame Xbox fans for putting all their focus on defending Redfall and Starfield while mostly ignoring Hi-Fi Rush. Such BS.
I think it was either Forza Horizon 5 or Gears 5. But both of those are kinda niche titles so the broader gaming community just doesn't pay attention to them (aside from the random youtubers calling gears of war a dead franchise because they didnt like the story). Wow. It feels like the end of a gaming era. Everything is going bad. I barely buy new games now. I just play my old library. It feels weird these times.
No, he's perfectly right. People used to say same the same thing back when Dark Souls came out, in fact there was a huge wave of people saying "Dark Souls ruined gaming for me". There have always been bad, unoriginal games. Mainstream gaming has always been mostly not good. As you get older and have more and more games under your belt, you begin to understand how repetitive certain trends are and become more critical. This issue can be compounded by only looking at the mainstream segment of gaming and not trying new things. Right now, the indie scene is better than it has ever been, there's plenty of non-mainstream titles which are AMAZING, plenty of larger studios who are focused on quality, most niches are being catered to in some way. Gaming is better than it has every been, you just need to look at other games than just Call of Duty.
Anthem was developed by Bioware and published by EA. (So no, Pete Hines did not say that. It was either Casey Hudson (when he worked there) or Andrew Wilson, who said it)
Gaming Corporations are utterly, dismantling this industry. It is completely, mind boggling. It's like all of the upper-wigs are done with this industry and are slowly, poisoning it to death with their idiocy so that they can like, liquidate all assets and move onto other brands ...like locusts. It's so sad and frustrating.
The industry employees are to blame heavily too. People have been begging them to unionize for a decade and instead they decided to keep their head down and sob through work so they could keep their "dream job".
@@megamandrn001 If they did try to unionize, they would all just be fired and replaced the next day. Most of these rank and file drones are imminently replaceable and they know it. Hi-Fi RUSH was one of my favorite single-player games of all time. And it genuinely _shatters_ my heart to think we’ll never see anything new from Chai and the gang ever again…
The people who bought the bite back edition should get a refund, if not those 5 people need to get on a class action lawsuit. Hi Fi rush was an amazing game, losing that studio is a massive mistake.
That fallout TV series was good, so corporate people are focusing on making new fallout game. Axing everything by just looking at numbers of only last oneyear, no long term perspective. Heartbreaking for players & developers.
No, it really wasn't. Just because it was better than things like Rings of Power, Halo and the Last of Us TV show doesn't make it good. We shouldn't grade on a curve: if I had Taco Bell diarrhea yesterday and a solid log today, today's poop might be better but it's still unfit to serve as someone's dinner.
@WhiteManOnCampus objectively, you're pretty wrong. Was it new Vegas levels of writing? No. But it was leagues above 4, therefore, pretty good. The cast knocked it out of the park. Cinematography was on par to damn good.
I keep hearing conflicting things about the Fallout show. Some people saying it's good, some people saying it's bad. Is it a matter of Fallout fans, starved for content being thrown a bone?
I just can’t believe that redfall was forced on Arkane and when it was forced on them a good amount of developers left the studio, then after it wasn’t a good game with any direction they just shut down the studio, they made some of my favourite games (Dishonoured, Prey, bioshock) just insane and so sad to me.
Reminds me of Anthem. Had a whole timeline of upcoming content drops that I believe had been included in the pro-order and deluxe edition bonuses. Studio insisted that they were going to fix the game and weren't going to abandon it. Entire content timeline gets delayed. Like a year goes by without any substantial improvement, and then all development is just stopped with nothing that was promised for the future ever materializing. I suspect the same will happen with Suicide Squad.
Most of Arkane's games never really reached the financial success that the hype around them would suggest. Dishonored for example. I know tons of people who played the first one, and enjoyed it. None of those same people (work acquaintances and friends) ever touched the sequels. Ditto with Rage, Death loop, ghostwire, Prey.
If gamers weren't idiots, this wouldn't happen. Don't pre-order, don't buy live service games, don't purchase season passes, no battle passes, no microtransactions, and if you buy a buggy/incomplete game, return it asap. If your chosen platform doesn't allow refunds, that's a you problem for agreeing to that garbage. Demand complete products for your money. Stop falling for publisher/developer shenanigans and promises about future crap. Wait for reviews of complete product. Also, stop forgiving developers for shoddiness. Every studio falls off. Shit's getting worse, not better, and it's the fault of everyone who keeps sucking down the copium that it keeps happening. No Man's Sky is the exception, not the rule, and it still took years for that game to possess 80% of what was initially promised.
Too bad for your anti live service campaign, bud. Helldivers 2 is the biggest game of all time right now, even after the Sony account fiasco, and it's been live service

It's sickening to think that an exec can just casually walk into a studio's office one morning and say "hey uhh, we're shutting down this studio, scrap whatever you're doing right now"
When a big studio buys out a smaller one... is there no option in the contracting to ensure that legally the projects they choose to work on afterwards can still be of their choosing without this cart blanche puppeteer control we've been seeing with all these throw away game service projects? Is there no protection or sovereignty they can be assured creatively when being rolled into the big corporate Katamari ball?
The answer is actually yes. A great example is Bungie. PlayStation acquired them in 2022 but allowed the executive leadership to stay in place so long as they hit certain revenue targets and KPI’s. The problem is, they have missed those targets by massive margins in the last few quarters and in those contracts it says that if they continually miss those targets PlayStation can take full control and they will lose their autonomy. So, it can happen, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will always go well for the studio
@@LukeStephensTV I guess it's always more sordid and nuanced than you'd initially think. Let's keep hoping there's some hard lessons learned about heaping joyless game-service schlock onto Dev's that are capable of better. Keep up the good content Luke👍
Redfall has so many odd design choices and weird decisions baked into it that I'm not sure it was ever recoverable no matter how much work was put into it.
The thing with season passes is typically they will offer it with some form of its content already released. This means since you have already received part of the purchase, you are not eligible for a full refund. It is a money trap essentially and that's what publishers want. That aside, Microsoft have done this behaviour before, consume dev/pub, restructure, have them make a title or two, rinse, repeat. It's their MO to get someone else to make hit games so Microsoft can own it. Bungie, Rare, Lionhead, etc., now it is Activision's and Zenimax's turns.
No, they don't It's still a product that they payed for, and as much as I hate blind buying specially when a game has red flags everywhere but it still is a thing people payed for and if we allow it to happen to bad games, it will happen to other games
@@TheForever206 yes, but that doesnt change the fact that it sets a precedent for future games and nobody wants studios to be able to get away with MORE shit
If a game launches in an insulting state like that, that bridge is burned with me. I wish more people would think like this, maybe we'd get games that launch in playable working states. I think that buying games after they 'come back' only enables this kind of 'release now, fix later' system we keep seeing over and over again. It actually saddens me that 76 is still around. But, as usual, the consumers' ignorance is the real problem, not the companies that do with stuff.
Imagine taking the crew as your free game back when and having that taken away. I also think the lead is getting buried here. Not a lot of people are surprised Arkane Austin was on the chopping block.. Tangoworks got shuttered.. the studio that made what you can argue is the best exclusive xbox had last year, Hi-fi Rush
Publishers have been ruining game companies by pressuring them into fitting a mold for decades. It happens with every new fad. MMORPGs, CoD clones, looter shooters, and big open worlds with quest markers have all had their turn in the spotlight. Because they don't see games as games, they see them as categories to be sorted and exploited. They can't let developers just make a good game.
While individual studios such as tango shutting down is a bummer. Cutting down the amount of people in some of these bigger companies makes sense. It’s become very obvious that these big companies have actually become less focused and proficient because there’s just too many chefs in the kitchen. Smaller companies like arrowhead show that sometimes less is more. This is something effecting a lot of the tech industry I believe. I think a lot of people assumed tech was the future. Jumped into it as a career choice and now there’s just an over saturation of workers in the tech industry.

I think a lot of people are putting this down to Redfalls failure, but while it is at least part of the reason, there is a lot more to it to be honest. Arkane has not actually put out a good or successful game since 2017 with Dishonored death of the outsider (not a full game) and Prey. The two Wolfenstein games they did either sucked or were niche (the VR game). Deathloop was better recieved, but hardly set the world alight with sales.

Phil Spencer’s been pretty crappy but I really appreciate how he’s emphasized game pass, backwards compatability I really enjoy those features. He’s just not very ambitious when it comes to anything else.

Reminds me of Anthem. Had a whole timeline of upcoming content drops that I believe had been included in the pro-order and deluxe edition bonuses. I suspect the same will happen with Suicide Squad.
There's no one to blame for arkanes closure but Ms, Bethesda should have remained a 3rd party publisher
Bathesda before the MS buyout was no saint

Your videos are 33% better with cats in them.
Microsoft had the developers just they did not use them well, if they were tools arkane was a hammer but they were used to paint
Why did Microsoft buy all these studios just to shudder them? Owning the IP's is only profitable if the games sell.
Tango deserved better.
They can't let developers just make a good game.
goodbye my hopes for Prey 2 (again)
"I've Redfallen and I can't get up!"
AGH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I played redfall for around 5 or 6 minutes.
Really really bad 🤦♂️
While individual studios such as tango shutting down is a bummer. Cutting down the amount of people in some of these bigger companies makes sense. It’s become very obvious that these big companies have actually become less focused and proficient because there’s just too many chefs in the kitchen. Smaller companies like arrowhead show that sometimes less is more. This is something effecting a lot of the tech industry I believe. I think a lot of people assumed tech was the future. Jumped into it as a career choice and now there’s just an over saturation of workers in the tech industry.
Oh. Didn’t know we were still expecting something lmao
I think it’s safe to assume we will see more live service looter shooters but with “quirky” mechanics because that’s “fun and exciting and new”
So.
What you're saying is....
We're not getting Hi-Fi Rush 2.
Or The Evil Within 3
Breaks my heart. Literally one of my Favorite Games of all time. You really got to love Tango. Well, rip.
I went to uni to do 3d game production 10 years ago and decided to move to advertising as I realised something wasn't up. I now make six figures doing 4-5 hours a day doing 3d for advertising. There isn't many people who use unreal and zbrush in advertising right now.
Do you have any advice to get into that line of work? I'm getting out of the games industry right now.
This will be the fate of suicide squad...
It's just there in the air..Just waiting till the life support is plugged out
It's weird, i'm remembering Red Fall as being several years old, so was surprised to check that it only came out last year, but think i'm recalling one of the playtests, so maybe release just took a long time. Didn't like it then, so haven't followed the game.
not any game can be overhauled like cp2077.. it takes passion, not gamepass (jfc kill me)
It takes the game being good in the first place. Cyberpunk was always good lore and story wise it was just the graphics and gameplay that was ass.
@@acev3521no. The graphics were always great, it was just last gen they were terrible and still are on that. Just most people didn’t have PS5 at the time, I did and I can say from day 1 it always looked amazing!
Like what!?
Cyberpunk was a great game BURIED under glitches and non functioning software. You can only "save" a good game that was broken. Not a bad game that works fine.
@@acev3521 The woke LGBTQIA+ devs were what went wrong with CP2077.
I'm so glad I didnt rush to buy Redfall after I saw horrible reviews just because most games get it together after launch.
13:28
Luke- It's certainly lacking support
Game- Hands clip through ledge over a year after launch
Next! Microsoft close Bethesda studios!
AGH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I WANT THAT TO HAPPEN!
Redfall will still receiving one final patch, allowing players to explore the town in offline solo-mode...
Redfall is a dish best served solo, playing to the strengths of this talented developer (long before they were pressured to create something outside of their natural wheelhouse.)
Redfall may not have delivered what Microsoft had hoped for, but I enjoyed every minute of exploring that sleepy fishing village under siege by vampires...
"Will receive one final patch"? Yeah, I don't believe so bub.
It took this for people to finally realize Xbox is on a downward spiral
So wrong
I hope not. It thanks to Xbox we’re getting the best of PlayStation, why we got the PS5 pushing the limits, the best games as it was pushing Sony to better. If it just them and Xbox go, we PlayStation users will lose out as they know it’s only them then!
So right
Why because the closed a studio that released a trash game. And it wasn't even Xbox that was responsible for Redfall. And after Redfall you blamed xbox for not managing their studios and now that they are your complaining lol
@@nsbm159 it was literally Microsoft and the higher ups that pushed the live service aspect onto Redfall that the developers were against from the jump. They were literally forced to make a game they didn’t want to. So wtf are you even talking about?
It’s infuriating how these people have no sense of responsibility for the millions they waste putting into a horrible project.
AAA games cost in the millions to make and you’d think they would handle those millions spent with more care similar to rockstars quality over quantity mindset.
Rest in peace Red Fall. No update can save you now, uh oh 😟
Hi-Fi Rush won the 2023 Game Awards for best audio design and was nominated for animation in the BAFTA Awards. It is wild that Xbox (aka Phil Spencer) closed this developer that won the best in category and nominated in another.
I really hope we get Prey 2 someday
I wished we got the original Prey 2 that Bethesda cheated us out of.
@@AndrewRyan-zv7zb Yeah I wish too but I don't think they will be able to now.
How many live service games have to fail before publishers realise it’s not what people want. Waste of money and developer time
It died the day of release
Ah yes, I'm so glad that future sales of Hi Fi Rush are gonna get funneled back into Bethesda and fund Fallout 89 instead of potentially going back to the devs at Tango to work on their next game project. Real happy about that. Thanks, Microsoft.
First time I'm hearing of this game
Ain't no way bro 😅🤣
@@Theoverlord77 for real man
Why are people even bothering with games like this on release always baffles me. Yall must get ate up with fomo when you see NEW RELEASE. There are so many 9/10 games u could experience
Xbox just burned any goodwill they had left
What? How?
They had goodwill?
They never had goodwill lol
Xbox's remaining customers have Stockholm Syndrome at this point.
Live service games are like those villains that never die and just keep coming back.
Name a studio that's improved since xbox purchased them
Blizzard
Obsidian
ID Software. The Doom reboot kicks @$$. Good thing they didn't get shut down and only suffered layoffs.
Playground Games. As of now, they're saving Forza from total collapse with Forza Horizon 5's sudden increase in update quality.
Mojang. They would've shut down had Notch failed to find a buyer to sell his studio.
Exactly. None of them.
I suffered greatly by being a PS timed exclusive and was released a few months after Returnal, which used a similar Edge of tomorrow mechanic. And most of those were the Lyon studio anyway. I think the only reason Lyon is still standing is that is internationally based.
It was unfair that they were forced to do Redfall, but at the end of the day it took them 6 years between that and Prey.
You cannot NOT love his cats
Sounds like they are about to catch a lawsuit, yet another studio that was seen as a high quality gamemaker bought out and turned to dust
This game was a shit stain on the gaming industry from the start
Pete hines and todd howard were!
