    December 2023. I've never hoarded. I toss at least 20 items each day, usually 25. There's always more that can go. Just today, I found some papers to recycle,
    some shopping bags for the food pantry, and some odd pieces of plastic to toss. There's a box of e-recycling in my car, and an auction prize to give away tomorrow. Tina, Al's wife

    I know you feel overwhelmed by the items in the laundry room, but my advice is to literally focus on one item at a time. That’s what I did for our extra bedroom. Several times, I was like I’m going to do this! And then I opened the door and said Ahhh! And quickly closed the door. It was too overwhelming. But your videos motivated me and I went back and just told myself, I’m just going to make a decision on this one item. And then I was like, okay, I can do one more. I set aside the harder items, but it really helped me tackle the mess one little bit at a time.

    I love that you did one key area of the laundry room that would benefit your family! I would bounce room to room when I first started to organize, and I tried to focus on the areas me and the family were in daily, and changing that first before the "big picture" so to speak. I'm so excited for you to finish the bedroom and redecorate that and to continue with the laundry room
    I love that the purple box is like a Time Capsule for you. It sparks joy and that's why you should keep it, at least just for now. Eventually you'll be able to have all your things categorized, I know it cuz you are already on the path to making that a reality.
    To organize your craft things, I suggest this when going through the laundry room later on, and applying this to every area of your house...
    I suggest getting cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, dollar tree bins, hampers, anything... label them with pen, paper, and tape, by the major craft items you own, just start with the items you think you have the most of. You can add more once you come across more of another category, like yarn/string or something. So you already have a pinewood derby bin and a glitter bin, now make a ribbon box, paper box, marker/crayon/whatever box. Try to not be TOO SPECIFIC with all that stuff because you'll probably run across more sentimental items or odds and ends that have nothing to do with crafts. Have a misc box you later condense later. I say just baby steps with this. I was able to shape up my attic into just boxes by having broad label descriptions to put things until I was ready to further sort a particular item/category. I have a box of just electronics that include phones, cords, and video game stuff, but later when I can sort through it, I'll further separate it by each of those categories and so on.
    You got this keep going. That area looks great so far!

    Something that could help, if you can think of all the biggest categories that you'll find in the room, make bins or containers with that name on it. Then once you're done decluttering and pairing down everything, you can take each category bin and further sub divide it. It'll be easier that way because there'll be less stuff when you're trying to organize. And it could serve as your second declutter because you'll be going through everything twice and you could see if you have any duplicates

  • @dankaa88
    @dankaa88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You can put all your ribbons and crafts in 2-3 big boxes/bins, when you found something during declutter, instead of putting it away in another place. And when you finish declutter, then you can organise what's in those bins, because they will be all together in one place. Sorry for my english, greetings from Poland :)

    Yes girl yes!! The fact that you can let go of some sentimental stuff is amazing !! This week I’ve also been decluttering and organising my space. It can be exhausted but it feels soo good once you’re done. Keep going !
    With the craft supplies, separate sewing from scrapbook stuff. You can use some acrylic organisers and boxes from Ikea depending on how much you have but maybe use one of the empty big boxes from the basement to put your craft stuff in first so it’s separate from everything else in the laundry room and then you can take a day out and go through your stuff?
    Good luck! You’re doing amazing 💖

  • @cack121

    I have mentioned before that I do this for a living :-) Use 3-4 boxes and just place them on top of the craft area across from your washer etc and as you come across your craft stuff place in respective box. Ribbon, flowers, glitter (use the purple clair box for glitter) etc. Then, deal with it when you get to that section.
    Walmart has cloth drawers for $2.88 that could go on that rack and each drawer assigned a craft item. Again, ribbon, paint, flowers etc. Only keep as much as will fit into one drawer. You should easily be able to fit 3 on each shelf. YOU CAN DO THIS
    All your wrapping paper can be kept in one wrapping paper container (cheap on amazon) and put down in the basement. All your seasonal items (stuff left from Easter etc) should be kept with Easter decor. Even if it is for a craft. It will only be used during that season. That beautiful gray flower pot would be adorable on the back of the toilet off the laundry room. Use it to keep hand soap, hand lotion, air freshener , etc If memory serves me correctly, there wasnt a cabinet in that room. Cant wait for you to be able to use that powder room
    We live in PA and to dispose of paint we need to keep lid off till it dries up and then can just throw the can into the trash. No special handling is needed once the paint is dried up.

    • @Mar10la
      @Mar10la 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great ideas! But I would maybe not go to Walmart/ on Amazon just to avoid the temptation of unneccessary shopping (thus more items coming in). I already see so many practical boxes and containers in these videos, I'm sure they work just as well :)

    • @cack121
      @cack121 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Mar10la I am thinking of something more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Once the room is done, having a hodge podge of boxes on the shelf will make it look cluttered. Having it all the same would make the shelf a decor piece which wont look clutered

      Maybe asking a friend or hubby to get the matching bins would work? I'm terrrrrrible about getting sidetracked in stores. 🤦‍♀️ But the idea of matching, streamlined bins in an area that's open like that is very appealing.

    I’ve only watched like 3 of ur videos so far and I’ve already subscribed. I’m a hoarder myself and as u we’re going through that old nail polish and picked up that old bracelet, I said to myself “I would keep that if it was mine” cuz even if something is broken and I’ve had it for years I’ll still keep it even if I can’t find a way to fix it. I have boxes of toys with build a bear that I haven’t played with in years but some of it I had since I was a toddler and I’m now 19. It’s kinda refreshing to watch someone else (who’s a hoarder as well) de clutter and get rid of their stuff cuz Ik it ain’t easy and I found that when others try to help me get rid of things I end up getting mad (just like they do the hoarders show but not as bad) and that made me realize I do have hoarding issues I wasn’t aware of (I promise I’m not mean. It was just something that happened and I didn’t mean for it to happen.) hopefully someone out there understands what I mean

    What I do 1st is separate items into macro-categories or the larger overall categories, weed out the trash and donations. Then 2nd organize the macro categories into micro categories, if needed. Such as, 1st: CRAFT and 2nd: kid's art, crafting supplies, wrapping, scrapbooking, beading, felting, etc. Also nice is to have project boxes, everything you need to make a project in progress.
    I learned that I like clear bins with labels on them. It helped so much. I have all my crafts in one box, but office supplies I needed to break down into smaller Dollar Tree boxes with labels. Paper clips and rubber bands, staplers and staples and hole punchers and tape, etc. The plastic drawer towers are also great for using vertical space. Avoid stacking. You don't want to need to move something else to get out what you need. It's all about making your life convenient and easier, no matter how much stuff you have! PS- you're doing great!

    I actually wonder whether doing a sweep through the area to find as many items as you can that can just be thrown away immediately might help just make some headway in these tough spots? Then you might have a bit more breathing room to be able to sort through the rest of the items, but just starting by getting rid of as many things as possible might help with just simply reducing the volume.

They are alive and healthy and with you, don’t hold onto the past. Everything you’ve done for them has turned them into who they are today! You don’t need THINGS. You’re doing great
    To tackle the craft stuff so you can get started. Get a big bin and put it all in there don’t worry about categorizing it yet. Just all crafts in one box. Once you have that whole room cleaned then you can focus on the box.
    Ribbon, with anything else on a roll like twine.
    But don’t organize it yet, wait till everything else is clean and then you can focus

    • @o0Theresa0o

    • @Slidapenguin
      @Slidapenguin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trickius for people that hoard, especially if they have anxiety organizing it’s helpful to just clean the space then tackle the individual boxes later on. This takes that initial stress away of being overwhelmed if crafts are mixed in with everything else.

      @sonyahubbard3226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @crazycroney

    I’m sure by now you are done with this room but what I would do is bring up those extra containers and put everything in them. Just throw them in. Once the shelves are Empty put boxes out with categories. This gives you area to sort one box at a time. There is 0 space to in that room to sort and this would help so much. I can’t wait to keep watching and see what happens. Again, your progress is truly inspiring and I will be recommending your channel to my clients. They do feel alone and ashamed and you shine a bright light onto a very dark and sad subject!

    The 90s hit me with this video! I graduated 8th grade in ‘99. When the stuff is too much for me I grab everything and put it in laundry baskets and then I do one basket at a time. When I get overwhelmed I like to just get it all out so I can clean and then treat it like a new space by slowing bringing the stuff back in. It helps me appreciate the space more.
    When I was younger my mom would grab everything from my room and drawers, and put it on my bed. So I might have picked this up from her.
    You’re basically doing the same thing, just attacking small piles while in the space. But either cleaning way requires space outside the room to use as a holding space for all the stuff (stuff to sort or stuff that is waiting to put away when there’s open space).

  • @lanadjango

    Depending on how many types of crafts you do, it might make more sense to store them based on craft rather than the type of article. For example; I really enjoy making birthday cards, painting, and sewing. For each craft, I have a separate big box containing some smaller boxes with the different supplies. If I need to make a card I just grab the box, place the smaller boxes containing glue, paper, and embellishments on the table and start crafting. When I'm done, I replace the smaller boxes in the big one and place the big box back in its place. I think this works pretty well since I don't have a designated crafting room.

Itll be amazing :) a good tip and hopefully this works for you, write down everything you typically have for your craft supplies. Then look around and see what you have for storage for those objects so like and like can be put away quickly. And once that bookshelf is cleared off those storage boxes can be easily put away!! Also while you're making the list check pinterest and see how others store those objects for inspiration! Good luck! Excited to see how your finished bedroom looks!

    Maybe set up boxes in the living room - trash, donate, lives elsewhere, then another few large boxes for general craft categories like paper, sewing and ribbon, paints/pens etc so you can just grab a small pile at a time and take it through and put it in the right box. Then once everything is in the big boxes, you can break it down into organised/storage boxes when you know how much room you have in the laundry room and know what type of containers will fit on the shelves. I always find with a small room and so much stuff, you just end up moving it about and never getting anywhere. It helps to just get it all out the room a little at a time and bring it back in a little at a time.
    Well done on getting rid of the sentimental bits. I have the same pompom hair ties and all kinds of bits like that that I'm unwilling to part with right now. I know just how they make you feel!

    It’d be really beautiful and practical to have your sewing kit neatly displayed in your room on top of a drawer or on a shelf, I feel like it’d make sure it’d have a proper place to be and have an easy to access area for you to get too.
    I also think it’d be a wonderful idea to have your family involved in some of the cleaning! Coming from a family where my parents have always been what we call, pack-rats, being able to throw out all the useless junk and whatnot when we’d be cleaning the house, I also found super therapeutic to do help my mom out and make her, as well as the rest of the family feel less cluttered with super old stuff

    For the craft shelf, I would get some plastic shoe box sized containers, enough to fill the entire shelf, so it looks unform and tidy in appearance. :) Label them "ribbon", etc. for each item and fill them. I prefer this, because the lids keep out all of the dust, they are clear so I can see inside, and the labels look cute. If I just dump everything into a box or basket that I can't see in, I find I don't use the items. That's just me!

    • @o0Theresa0o
      @o0Theresa0o 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think labels should be easily swappable (i.e., not labels that are stickered to the plastic or something) because if you want to switch something up, or want to re-purpose a bin, you end up with the annoying label not matching (and that creates a chore to change). Something like a tag that hangs off the bin would be good.

Use the containers you already freed up to put things in by category (or room it should transfer to). Go through each of the boxes or bags of stuff and sort. Then clean/rearrange the laundry room to suit your categories. Then put it all away. Sounds like alot but it can be chunked into sessions :)

    I'd just chuck all the craft stuff into large bins and label them then we you get to the area where you are gonna craft go through the bins.

    AAAAHHH THE '90s butterfly clips! XD So many flashbacks to those pretty sparkly things!
    Ok, here's my ADHD-managing method for tackling jumbled piles. Get containers, bags or boxes (hello diaper box!), for 1-3 categories (one of them can be trash). Like Bin A: Craft supplies. Bin B: Goes in other rooms immediately Bin C: Trash.
    But I see you have a TON of ribbon so in your case, since you also want to set up your crafty corner here first, I'd do Bin A: Ribbon, Bin B: All other crafty things you find. Bin C: Trash. And go ahead and put into the bins any crafty items you can easily spot scattered in the laundry room. Then, Konmari Craft Corner to your needs and enjoy the masterpiece! Later on, as you tackle other chunks of the room, you'll be able to home any missed craft supplies more easily!

    Love your laughter!!! and I love how you share your process with us, this is so important, like allowing yourself to respect your feelings and doing things in their own time without forcing too much that may backfire...for example at the beginning when you decide to put the kid seat in the attic, that is fine! one step at a time!! I think maybe you can just start making bins of generic crafts for now, because if you start being too specific it may derail you or overwhelm you? You could separate broad categories, but not get too much into micromanaging at this stage? back to watching

    Carft room declutter & organization ( acc to me 😊) 1- take some big ikea big paper boxes 2- make two categories for your items ( trash ♻️) and ( will put in ikea boxes ) 3- take all these boxes to the living room 4 - one by one slowly make categorize the items ..... 5- clean the laundry room 6- clean the craft shelves 7- clean all empty basket & boxes etc. ..... 8 - put all your sentimental items to the basement to decluter & organize later. 🧡🌱

      Also agreed. Make bins of larger categories (crafts, paperwork, kids things, miscellaneous, etc.) Clean the laundry room and then you'll be able to sort and organize back on the shelving unit into more specific categories(ribbon, paint, glitter). Then you can tackle one category at a time.

    I have a trouble with bags/boxes too. Now, when I see a couple gathering, I give it fifteen minutes a day and go thru it with less stress ( from flylady, hotspots) Another thing I read in a book, is remember that your the Princess, on your way of becoming Queen of your Castle. Old stuff, you can say to it, be gone! I'm a princess! I don't need these things anymore because I am a Princess! The power that gives you, especially over older, more sentimental things helps you to tossy tossy sometimes.

Anyway, so nice to hear that your husband is benefitting from this clean up (as well as the other ones ofcourse)! Also wanted you to know that your progress has been on my mind and has helped me last couple of days to be content with doing a little bit at a time ☺ (not just cleaning, but other stuff as well)

    Great Job getting to the Laundry/Craft room! If not too much and will freak you out: consider the clear trash bags for collecting your Craft items. For example you can put all the ribbon you want in the bag and then you will know what size container you need. Don't forget to "shop" your house for empty - clear containers. Also if you can do a quick search and find of the Laundry/Craft room - things that are definitely trash and garage sale that will help you when it comes time for organizing the Craft items. Best Wishes!!!

    I recommend googling "organizing craft supplies in a small space", and see what's recommended. I HIGHLY recommend clear bins because it helps if you can visualize what you have on hand (so you don't get more of the same stuff, and also to mentally note that it's already a lot and you don't *need* more).
    I think it makes sense to put all the ribbons together, and then maybe all the adhesives, all the things you would 'adhere' (i.e., stickers, pictures, buttons, etc.), all the glitters, etc., and then whatever is 'miscellaneous' gets its own space. You might do well with a rack or two of clear bins, and then a couple of open shelves for maybe the bigger things you want to store (like your 3-tier metal stand thing when you want that out of circulation).

The next step is organizing till you know where everything is and you feel at peace. So everything is step by step and your doing wonderful so far just keep in your mind that this is the clearing out, and sorting part.

    Great job. Hopefully this suggestion might help you. I wouldn’t stress about breaking down the categories down as specific as glitter for example as you don’t have clear spaces yet. I’d do three big boxes for craft 1. Glitter/Paint/Glue 2. Paper craft 3. Embellishments (ribbons, foam stickers, shells etc) when you have your feet clear you can do specific organising and it will let you revisit the items you thought were special enough to keep. Well done on your achievements 🦄🦄🦄

    YEAH !!! YOU DID IT!! Congrats! As for the craft items, keep putting them in one area until you are ready to sort the whole lot in one shot... Shelf by shelf and put like items with like... Then it will come to you as to where to store it... Maybe back on the shelves with labeled boxes "glitter", "ribbon", soap box", etc. It will come to you. You CAN do this 🤗♥️✝️

      PS... I am going thru my craft stuff now, too. WHOOOH! Small bites. I did all my scrapbook stuff in small bites: sorted all paper, then embellishments, markers, etc. Then purge and organize and store. Do for each craft.. because I have so much and Soo many craft types... Quilting, needlework, beading, etc. Tackle each one individually OR by keeping all like craft items together: markers, fabric, paper, etc. In separate containers 😎

    I think when it comes to crafts and hobbies you have to realize that you don't have time for everything that interests you; pick a handful that you really love and donate the extra for someone else to enjoy. With less crafts and hobbies you can simply store them by type in drawers or bins. The easiest way to organize is to declutter. I know exactly what you mean about anxiety, I get it every time I take something off to donate even if it isn't something important to me. Just know that any guilt and anxiety you may feel will soon pass as you start to enjoy your space and freedom from these unnecessary things. You are doing a great job. Full watch, big like! :)

    Hey, great job! You set a goal and you met it. Two suggestions, 1st: Labels! I got a pack of fancy, but inexpensive black chalkboard labels and a single pretty metallic marker (that I already had) and now I label all of my containers. The chalkboard labels are erasable if you use the right marker or I just use a new label if I change what's in the container. 2nd: when you have a big pile of same, but different like craft materials, try grabbing one arm full of stuff and move it to another area that is reasonably clean and sort it there. The trick is to only sort a small amount at a time and have a spot to put it in once it is sorted even if it is a temporary spot. Also, do you have freecycle in your area? I have rehomed a lot of stuff through freecycle, especially clothes, bed linens, cosmetics and toys.

    I think I can relate to this room the most. Boxes of miscellaneous stuff from different decluttering sessions. Only in my case those boxes are on and next to the coffee table in my one-room-apartment (sleeping and living area divided by Ikea Billy shelves). Craft supplies mixed with household items mixed with papers mixed with junk. So many little things without a proper home or use...
    I need to implement those little clearing sessions into my evening routine 😩

And so what I did is go through it several times and that helps with letting go. maybe it's a nice thing that you can make a nice box for your contact paper and wrapping paper. And you will first collect and then make something for it. then you collect all your ribbons and make something for your ribbons. etc maybe you feel like it and wod it easier for you. lots of love Ellen

    I’ve started on my craft zone by putting boxes 1 keep 1 donate 1 trash. Then I started breaking the keeps down like you have some glitters, ribbons and fibres, embellishments. Then you break these down again if needed. But make sure you don’t do it all in one day. I used a timer and set it to 30 mins a time. Then I’d go away do something else and wait at least half a day before doing another section. Just an idea if you want to try it.,

    If you aren't using that little bathroom as an actual bathroom, maybe you could take out the toilet and sink and turn it into a storage cupboard for your craft supplies. You could put up some big shelves right across from wall to wall and have storage boxes underneath. That's what I would do. :)

  • @jessicagoodwin3408

    Given this is a small room, it might make sense to quick sort. A few empty boxes to sort into. Crafts, paper, sentimental, holiday etc and then take it out to the family room to purge sort? Or that might be harder on your anxiety.

      @@ahoardersheartyeah, it would be manageable. More konmari style maybe? Honestly, if it's sentimental leave it for later. Just get your spaces in a comfortable easy to tidy place and deal with the hard stuff a little at a time. I have bin in the basement with the baby items of my daughter I couldn't part with. And a small bin of infant toys I loved for her. In her room is the file for her school work and class pictures. Every birthday I have a t-shirt made for her with age and name and I put them in another bin in basement to make myself a quilt with later lol I know she won't want them. But I will!! Your getting so good at knowing what you really feel is sentimental and what you have a memory for but can part with and be ok. So much work has been done in your mind. It's so neat to watch your process!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

    Tip: I have this problem with fabric. I made a list of all the quilt projects I would like to complete. Decide in advance, before you even walk in the room, how many of an item you actually think that you need. Like the ribbon. How many projects do you do per month that requires ribbon? Every holiday? Or once a month? Once a week? Once a month, would be 12 items of ribbon in a year. Anything more than that, you don't need and it is not fullfilling its purpose in a box or bag. That way maybe you won't be triggered.

    I can't remember if it was the first or second book, but Konmari does say not to worry about organizing until you have the whole section sorted. Of course, in reality those of us with kids can't leave our kitchen or laundry detergents where the kids can get to it for days on end, but maybe try to practice not thinking about organizing too much until you have one shelf or one area sorted through? :)

    I need to do craft stuff sooooooon. 😨 I guess mine is mostly sorted into cabinets, so the 'macro' part is good, but I struggle with what to keep because... crafts! You never know what you'll need later on! Blergh.
    Great job getting to the door!! IDK if this will help you part with them, but carseats expire. Mostly places won't take them for donation. Target does a thing once or twice per year where they take old carseats for recycling and then give a 20% coupon for a new larger baby department item. I didn't need anything when we recycled our infant car seat, so I was able to gift my coupon to a friend who then got a stroller!

    If you have a whole day and nice weather (and maybe an extra set of hands for hauling) you can put all the stuff from the craft shelf on a tarp in your yard right outside the door. Of course this only works with a project you can finish in 1 day.

    You ended your video with wondering how to manage your craft supplies. I have seen through video 5. I love how you put crafts in their own bin. Ribbon 🎀 got its own because of how much you have. This is excellent for right now. In the future you can group like with like. Then you’ll know how much space is needed for each area. I actually have a box for contact paper because we recently moved and it’s time to line all shelves, drawers, etc. I also plan on reusing smaller boxes to sort like things together ... like shampoo, conditioner, cleaning supplies and more. I want to cover them with contact paper too. Anyways, I’m remembering the box you decorated in your closet.

    With bigger messes like your craft area, I would take all the stuff that’s overflowed out of boxes and just put them in the boxes you have. Then when it’s all put in the cardboard boxes, you can declutter box by box.
