  • Everyone wants America’s education system to do better. Ex-Googler Max Ventilla has a radical idea for how to make it work more like a social network. Ventilla’s AltSchool is building a highly-personalized education experience that gets better and cheaper as more students use it. Subscribe: freeth.ink/youtube-subscribe-...
In a decade, AltSchool may not have just built some new schools but rather a new school system that all will be able to join. What do you think: is this the future of schools or an idea that won't succeed? Let us know what you think about education reform in the comments and subscribe to Freethink for more videos on the cutting edge of social and technological change.

I have been saying for a long time that the education system is SO yesterday. It all needs to change with the times. Its so awesome to see some one out there with brains to set up something so wonderful like this for the young student of today!

      Here's My Plan :
Step 1: Collect Information (Check Survey On my About Page)
Step 2: Make a Document that addresses the problems & solutions for the education systems.
Step 3: We all come together and Send that document (via Mail) to Policy Makers, Government officials, media companies, and so on.
If enough people (hundreds, maybe thousands) send that document and we can gain enough support and attention, I think we can make a Huge difference, no matter who we are.

It happens with majority of students and i think it's natural to happen, because being a high school student you don't have much exposure of outer world and information, and there are some of things in our mind which we can't explain at first the way we know them, we need to practice them... We need to polish ourselves, this is basically a part of good communication...

Children need to learn how to think, not what to think. This is a grave issue in mainstream schooling nowadays. To develop agency is to learn how to reason and make informed, intentional and meaningful decisions for oneself. Educational innovation is the pathway to transforming schools. I appreciate Alt Schools ideas toward this transformation.

I think student should show up to a large comfortable space with its own kitchenette, fridge, table, bathroom, desks , rec area and green space that students design and decorate themselves. It will not be the teachers classrom, it will be your classroom. You can even have a pet if it does not bother another student. You will have 14 classmates and will show up to school in flex period. No bells. Siri will be watching and recording you. You specialized teachers will arrive in 1 hour30 min blocks for through lessons. Only 4 subject a day with math everyday and everything else on a loop schedule. All computing will be wireless and you will have your own device. You will be pulled from your classroom for labs, theater, sports in small groups, so during pars of the day there may only be 7 students in a classroom. It's probably then you will pull your lunch from the fridge and heat it. Then you will go to small group activities and the other half of your class will have lunch. Every student will have their own individualized education plan. Your teaches will only have to keep track of about 50 students, but they rove between classrooms.

Why am I worried about personalised education? Why do I fear this will segregate education back to the time prior to 1920 with the haves and have-nots? All this costs money. How do we make this available to the inner city kids? The kids whose parent do not work for Google or Microsoft or Bank of America. Why do I think the have-nots will be even worse off than they have been up to know. The gap between the educated and the uneducated (and thus unemployed) is going to expand exponentially. Don't get me wrong, I love this idea. All I'm saying is that it comes at a cost. There must be a more inclusive approach somewhere.

not necessarily, because eventually hardware will be so cheap and it will mostly be about software. Look how now anywhere in the world they have access to all the worlds knowledge on wikipedia etc. The first few generations of the software might be expensive but then there will be cheaper versions for the rest of the world. The rich countries might always have the super bleeding edge software, but it might not be objectively that much better. Kind of like certain medical treatments now. You can pay 100k to get it in the US and it might be slightly better but you can also pay 2K in Thailand.

Education is very important. I completely agree that everyone needs different education. Something else I think is important to know is that you can not make someone learn. If an individual refuses to learn, no amount of disciplinary action can help them as many schools commonly promote. There has never been a time where self-education was more achievable. Unfortunately, it is also very discouraged.

we want an education system that any child can afford that is the main issue but this is still a first step. the major concern is the positive response in putting it into practice in terms of solving the problem that we already have of unemployment.. where are those children going to practice the things that they have learned is still a major task.... thank you for the inspiration

To everyone saying they want to go here, I go to the same school as Max Ventilla’s daughter and he sold the school last year, and trust me, normal schools are better then this once middle school arrives. The original idea was good but it fell apart after late 2017. Not worthy of 25k tutiton. I am in 7th grade and are preparing to transfer, the world is not ready for this yet.

YES in the 1800's students would be subordinated to take on the role of teachers to teach younger students, since it was usually only one teacher in a school house, and this hierarchy puts less strain on the teacher as well as involves all of the students more, instilling them with a greater sense of responsibility.
The greatest teachers are also students, and the greatest students are also teachers.

This is great. When I was a kid I was part of the GATE program, the school ended funding for the program. I was soon subject to adults who would dictate what I do and when I did it, I quickly lost interest. I sometimes wonder what I would be if I had spent those years expanding my knowledge instead of playing video games and sneaking beers. In short, the public education system failed me greatly. (oh and my state spends about 40k/student)

Look up the Reggio Emilia approach, it's an educational philosophy where students lead and teachers guide and encourage. Instead of homework, children work on projects and can choose what project they want to work on. There are no tests, no worksheets, no lesson plans. Instead there are centers for children to explore different materials (mainly natural or recycled) and ask questions and then the teacher builds on the student's curiosity.
Reggio education was developed after WW2 in a small town in Italy, so this concept has been around for a long time but many people don't know about it. I taught at a Reggio preschool for 4 years and the kids were happier, more confident, and more creative than kids who had to go to a traditional school where they have to sit in a boring class and memorize stuff they are forced to learn. The only issue is that the school I used to teach at is only for rich kids. It's a very expensive school with small class sizes. This type of school needs to be free for everyone.

Sounds good, do you have any recomendation or literature to read on how to complement education at home for children? I love all the innovative new aproach at this matter, but being realistic its not about to be implemented everywhere, so i´m concerned as a parent how I can complement the current type of education at home without overwhelming the kids. Sorry for the english I´m not a native speaker.

    • @Tracydot3
      @Tracydot3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Fernando-vn2ms How old are your kids/is your kid and what country do you live in? There's isn't a blanket approach to homeschool education. It depends on the child's age, how they learn, where they live, and what their interests are. It also depends on how much time you have per day to dedicate to their education. I know it can seem overwhelming if you aren't a teacher and don't really understand how it all works, but it really depends on a lot of factors. I can't recommend a random book without knowing more information about your situation.

This is a great idea but first you’d have to convince the nation and it’s leaders to give a crap about education and schools. Many of the ones making decisions were raised in the factory model of school and can’t see past that. They are not creative or innovative thinkers. Hell, many simply cannot understand how important creativity is to learning. They see things like art, music, etc as unimportant when it comes to school. Teachers in many places are told that students are not allowed to draw, paint, etc in class.
