  • A real time ownership review of the BMW 640d.
    Car Mad Dad’s guide to running the car, costs, and ownership. Including why I believe these really are one of the used car bargains of the decade!
    My thoughts of the 640d for what has been 2 years and 30,000 miles as my daily workhorse, the car has been through everything I can throw at her! As a typical family man needing a car for all purposes, the 640d really is more than just your average family car.

    I think a BMW 640d is genuinely my (attainable) dream car, we all have the Porsche 911 GT3’s and the Ferrari 488’s in our heads but for the realistic everyday, I fancy the pants off a 640d.

    Great review. Thinking of getting one of these or a 435d. Whilst in theory I'd like a more agile sporty drive, in reality I think the luxury and refinement of the 640, as well as the looks would make it a better choice, especially for long journeys

    • @CarMadDad
      @CarMadDad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've hit the nail on the head there Chris. Performance will be very similar and if you pick one up with rear wheel steering that would improve agility. Don't get me wrong though - it's no slouch around the corners in the right mode.

    Hi Chris, belter review and rewatch this a few times as getting one this year , the only dilemma being I've got is a 12 and 11 year old that will spend some time in car on short journeys as well as the missus . I agree with you that the 2 door is better looking , yet the GC seems the more recommended. Also quite a few reports on the GC coming in that the rear behaves skittish on the road , what you think?

    • @CarMadDad
      @CarMadDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks dude - real kind of you.
      If you need the back at all - you need to go for the gran coupe chap.
      Last 12 year old I had in mine was ok - but as a one off not a regular thing!

    I saw a different video of yours about the land rover in which you said that you are driving it in winter. Do you think that 640d is useless/dangerous to drive in winter season or would it doable with winter tires? How would you say is the traction on wet roads? The car delivers a lot of torque to rear wheels so can you drive quickly on wet roads without losing traction?

    • @CarMadDad

    This was my go to review when I was changing car and in my heart had decided that I was going to get a 640d.
    I took the plunge eight weeks ago now and bought a low mileage one in space grey. I’ve replaced the mid quality tyres which still had plenty of tread on for some much quieter and super grippy Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GTs which I felt the car deserved. What an gorgeous car I now have. I absolutely love it. I now look forward to my 30 mile drive to work each day.

      werder freak I’ve recently got rid of my 2012 640D. Had to get rid of it as my kids are growing and don’t fit in the back with me in the front. In terms of reliability I had owned mine for just over 6 years, did 145k and not once did I have to pay for any repairs. Only cost was servicing was generally done every 22k which was astounding.
      Wouldn’t worry about the servicing being BMW, they do not generally carry out a service as good as a independent. Every time I took mine to BMW was always told I needed new brake disc, despite them changing them the year before. Took it to my regular garage and they said they did had a few years life left in them.

I have got to admit that it drove well, but replacing suspension arm bushes and front springs with that kind of mileage on a Merc isn't on. Engine management warning lights that put the car into limp mode on an intermittent basis. A few other niggles. I know that nothing is guaranteed, but they're not of the same quality as in past. A friend of mine paid a lot of money for a update R class, virtually new and had an absolute nightmare. £22,000 for the car, and over £8k in the first year.

    I’m looking at a six series and there’s one thing that’s very confusing and I’d appreciate if someone could help.
    I’m looking at the facelifted car. The facelifted car has 9 instead of 10 slates in grille, different headlights and wing mirror turn signals. But the one thing that’s confusing are the rear reflectors. I’ve read that they are positioned in the lower section of the rear bumper on the pre-facelift cars, and moved just under the tailights on the facelift. But the thing is that I have seen some cars that appear to be facelifted (2015+) have the reflectors positioned on the lower section of the bumper and some have it under the tailights. Can anyone please help clear the reflector thing up?
    Thanks!!
