- Is the 2023-24 Penn State wrestling team the greatest of all time? After all, Cael Sanderson's squad did set the NCAA tournament team points record at 172.5 and had a 100-point margin of team victory. Plus, the Nittany Lions sported six finalists, four individual champions, and two four-time NCAA champs all in one weekend. To some people, those accolades still aren't enough! Locked On Nittany Lions host Zach Seyko and the voice of Penn State wrestling, Jeff Byers, settle the debate. Find out Jeff's take on Carter Starocci's impeccable title run and Mitchell Mesenbrink's finish in the 165-pound final against David Carr. In the final segment, Zach and Jeff share their end of the season takeaways and answer this question: should Penn State build a statue of Coach Sanderson?

Yes, this was the best team of all-time. Most points scored and by the widest margin of victory. What's more impressive is that they did it without VanNess and with a hobbled Starocci. If Carter and Greg decide to return next season more records will be shattered
I think the overall talent wrestling in the NCAA TOURNAMENT is the best it’s ever been by far. The training and the experience these kids get before coming to the NCAA is far, far better than it has ever been.
To dominate the way Penn State did this year, in this era of highly trained and skilled wrestlers, makes it the GOAT. I’m a wrestling fan, not a Penn State fan. It’s not that I dislike Penn State but I live in Ohio and back the Buckeyes. I ADMIRE, RESPECT and recognize the greatness of this year’s Penn State team. Bravo🎉
I am no wrestling expert ( let alone a historian), but the numbers favor Penn State. The competition which was the 1997 Iowa Hawkeyes lost a dual meet, while Penn St went undefeated. That undefeated record included a 29-6 defeat of Iowa @ Carver which was Iowa’s worst home loss in over half a century. To me, the thing that stands out is the 100 point margin of victory between Penn St and the second place competitor Cornell. That shows just how dominant they were.
Well that would be a great point if we used the weakness of the field to determined greatness. Most the time you judge greatness because it beat other greats, not because they blitzed a weaker than normal field. They were by far the best team this year. But to ignore all the facts about transfer rules, scoring point changes, bracket scoring rule changes would be very disingenuous and is not a fair comparison.
It is hard to compare seasons since the competition is always changing. But you guys are spot on.
I still have a soft spot for 2017, had Surriano recovered we most likely would have had 6 champs - he beat both finalists.
That d said this team was the most balanced but far. Beau was sticking with a gramby from being a champ. Bernie tweaked his knee at the wing time. Davis had and lost the winning takedown in wrestlebacks, SVN was injured, MM was right there... 180+ was in play with this team all the way.
Maybe just maybe next year with what we have returning (130+ pts) and coming in will be considered the best ever?
Here should be the scary thing for the rest of the NCAA. Imagine in s perfect world Carter comes back as well as Kerk….in regard to TEAM POINTS, the hole to fill is 197….but we had no points to speak of at 125-133, and both those spots will be filled IMO by Lilledahl and Davis, with what I think will be 30 more team points minimum. With a healthy SVN, and an AA at 197, this team could score 190 points at NCAA’s. I predict 7 in the Finals next year. If you can get odds NOW that this team will win the NCAA’s convincingly, bet the farm.
I don’t understand how you lose track of riding time he got ridden for a long time
Without Van Ness too
What's hard to understand is how passively and straight up Lewis wrestled Carter.
Starocci destroyed Lewis earlier in the season, 11-0.
@@youarerightboss I’m aware. Not a casual fan. Still why not let it fly
@@farbeyonddriven8173 because Starocci mentally broke Lewis
No contest. Byers is correct. Listen to the how dominant this Penn State team was.
Well if you use the rules from 1997 than its not close. Iowa didn’t have 3 point takedowns, They didn’t have 4 point nearfalls which makes major dec and techs much easier. Look at all the majors Penn State had, that would have been decisions without the additional points from rule changes. Plus Kasak would have scored 0 point for Penn State under the rules of 1997 because he would have qualified for the wrestle back. Plus with 1997 rules they wouldn’t have had Mitchell or Bernie on the Team. PSU had a great team but not one that would have rivaled what the 1997 Iowa team did.
1997 Iowa did not go undefeated like Penn State did.
@davidbrown386 If undefeated was the criteria there would be a lot of greatest teams. Everyone is talking points scored which under 1997 rules Penn State get 0 point from Kasak. Bernie and Mitchell couldn’t have competed and Penn State would have lost a lot of extra points on Bonus for techs and major’s because of rule changes. Like I said, if you compare them apples to apples 1997 and 1983 Iowa wins by a mile.

I think it’s a futile endeavor to talk about college wrestling and GOAT when comparing the 97 Iowa team vs the 2024 Penn State team. On-the-mat rule changes, COVID, transfer portal, etc. There’s just too much dis-similarities between the different eras to make an objective apples-to-apples comparison.
Everyone did not benefit from the 3 point takedown.. the tier 2 and 3 wrestlers don't benefit from it..
You think this te was good. Wait till you see what the next 2-6 years is going to look like. With what we have and what is coming in its crazy
Prospective 2024-2025 line up
125lb Davis
133lb Nago
141lb Kasak
149lb VanNess
157lb Haines
165lb Mesenbrink
174lb Starocci
184lb transfer
197lb transfer
285lb Kirkvliet
Penn State also has the number one ranked recruiting class coming in this year and next.
Try Barr at 184, and maybe Lilledahl at 125/Davis at 133 and you might have it
Lilledahl will be at 125….we haven’t had as talented a 125 pounder as him maybe in that room ever. IMO, if Carter comes back he will be at 184….Levi and Mesenbrink swap weights, and I think Facundo may make 174.
