The parties generally do not field candidates against the Speaker in elections so that they can be re-elected by their constituency without having to take sides on issues, make political promises, or anything like that: from when they're chosen as Speaker they have to be able to be a neutral referee regardless of their background.

I remember this. Basically the conservatives tried to carry out a cheeky last second vote to get rid of John when all MP were at their home/busy (they brought it up the no confidence (or whatever you call it) in the morning and secretly kept a few MP around Parliament to push it through). Labour got wind of this and rushed their entire (or as much as they could) body of MPs back to the house to vote against it. Conservatives then rushed more of their MPs back to Parliament. It Basically became a race against time and every vote counted.
So it was even more super backstabby than just a plain vote of no confidence.

The big thing was that this vote was on the last day of parliament before it dissolved for re-election, generally nothing gets done and this debate wasn't announced by William Hague until ~2300 the night before. Labour and the Lib Dems had all gone to their conststuencys, but the Conservatives had been asked to stay behind for 'a party meeting', then they tried to push this through. So it was the sneakiness of the whole thing that made it special, there were quite a few Conservative rebels

Privately, he does feel that "Brexit is the greatest foreign policy mistake in the post-war period", which he said publicly once he left the position and didn't need to be impartial anymore. But he did not allow that specifically to guide his actions and conduct as Speaker. When he took the chair in 2009, he set out to make sure that Government and Opposition members of the House are treated and represented fairly, and that's exactly what he did. If Government ministers want to call him biased and try to oust him for allowing the Opposition to hold them accountable as they should, that should hardly be surprising.
