  • After 10 years as House of Commons Speaker, John Bercow will be stepping down by 31 October. Well known for his theatrical shouts of 'Order' to unruly MPs, he has also proved to be a controversial figure in one of the most turbulent episodes in British politics. From his thoughts on Donald Trump addressing parliament to accusations of calling the leader of the house, Andrea Leadsom, a 'stupid woman', here are five of his most memorable moments in the role

Music is psychological manipulation. A low single note drone or a heroic and triumphant buildup can give the same scene in a movie a drastically different interpretation. Same goes for speeches. Words do not need to be underscored. You'd think journalists would understand this and be objective. But then if you were objective you wouldn't exclusively select anti-Brexit, anti-Trump, anti-Conservative or, well, basically anything that isn't the far-left.

When he gave Boris a dressing down for his addressing of the foreign secretary I instantly fell in love with him. A gentleman is measured on his character, which is ultimately addressed on how he treats others. @@JfK--OBJECTivE Move away from the position of a brexit partisan hack for a moment, and understand that from the standpoint of a speaker of the house, allowing MPs to vote who represent the 49.5% who did NOT vote for brexit is well within his mandate of defending the interests of democracy and the house of commons, in the face of a government that actively sought to try to use the rules to deny votes on parliamentary measures.
That is precisely what an independant, strong, honorable, and reliable speaker should do. Even if it opposes their original party, and even if it opposes what some voters would want to happen.
A reminder that until brexit, not a single brexit hack had anything poor to say about Bercow, and in fact, those same hacks re-elected him to speaker AFTER brexit even started. Unanimously.

I love this guy. His sense of fairness and humanity has set a new standard in parliament. His introduction to young people of the workings of British politics with the Youth Parliament, has yet to make its impact fully felt. I think that, despite huge members of schools having become such stifling centres of coercion and control, the annual lead-up to MYP elections must have helped in UK school climate strikers' confidence in speaking out.
His will be a hard act to follow indeed, but hopefully he'll have paved the way for further changes still to position parliament as a more genuinely representative institution.

Peter Brodie You're right but unfortunately he was and still is hated by many exactly because of his progressiveness. I try not to generalise but I have a feeling most of the Brexit supporters hated him because he didn't give a "flying flamingo" and just straight up put their darling Boris in his place.

Stevean2, I'm not sure why you think trump should speak in parliament in the first place. He's not an MP, he's not a UK voter or resident or a UK national. What makes you think he has any right to address our democratically elected representatives?!? As for unemployment in the UK, that's because our government gave the bankers a big handout after financial crash, instead of investing it in UK industry. If you believe all the lies that clown at no 10 spins then I pity you
