Red Cedar Lumber- Does Anyone Really Want It ?

  • The video today is just a quick and enjoyable non-eventful exercise in sawing one double-ugly red cedar log into some surprisingly pleasant lumber. I really expected to see some serious internal rot due to the rough exterior of the log. Cut over three years ago and set in the cedar pile for the mill, it still contained much more high quality final product than I originally thought. #outdoors #sawmill, #frontier, #cedar

      I was thinking real hard of making 11" boards, but went with the 8's instead. There would have been less of those. I'll have a tendency to use the 8'' more than the wider ones.

    What a plum preddy batch a cedar! I can just about smell that aroma here in Pa! I do believe a 44 tu tu cedar closet is in order, that would be a 44 TT CC! After a long winter storage, hibernation one might say, well you want a fresh and lovely scent wifting about the 44 Estate come Spring. Imagine how The Baroness Missus be aroused with not just the pleasant spring ritual tu tu jig but the scent of cedar to boot! I can see it now,,,,well smell it now! Perhaps you could sell small pieces from the slab wood that your fans can hold to our noses as the spring ensemble twisting, turning and spinning begin as the daffodils sprout from the early estate greenery. I’m sure it will go viral and bring millions of views! This calls for some Special Tippin and Sippin right now! DaveyJO is outta heer but not without Squeezez fer ser!

      Hot doggies DaveyJO...that sure would make the ol' tutu's smell good wouldn't it !! My sisters used to sew cedar sawdust from the old mill at home into long tube shapes to sit on the floor of the closets. Just jostle it ever now and then to revive the cedar smells for the foot wear. I got several of the walk in closets already lined in cedar for the Missus here at home too. Sure looks and smells good. But the smell goes away after a while, but its good while it lasted. Have a Very Merry Christmas way up yonder in the cold cold state of Pennsylvania my friend.

    Great looking boards! I love cedar. I could smell the wood from here when you were cutting it!!! Just curious about the sawdust in the mill. I'd have to go back and look at some early mill videos but, I don't recall the sawdust coming out all over the place like it does now. It seems to build up quick inside the mill and spill out everywhere. Did something change or am I imagining things? Merry Christmas to you and yours!!! 🎄🎄🎄

      The door clips on the mill are funky. I broke the one on the right assembling the mill and the left one just won't hold at all. But it's all good, leaking the sawdust make for longer runs between blowing it out. LOL I need bigger heavier clips to fix it. Not gonna mess with the replacements from Frontier. @@tractorman4461 so imagine we normally travel for Christmas but this year I spent most of it in my recliner. I like that driver's seat better! So it was nice. Hope yours was too. On oak red / black $8.80 for a 8 to 10 ft length. It seems like it was a 2x8. But it was a true 2-in thick rough cut 8 inches wide. But look more like it was white oak he gave me. I've got their lumber prices. Now that's not killing dry. Kellen dried is $2 a foot I think I have no idea what other types of wood would sell for. Also that's less than what I had been spending with another guy. But that stuff is like gold and most major metropolitan cities the hardwood stores. And go online and Google what they want it's ridiculous. No you can't ask Daddy three I was thinking about buying some for myself a few sticks. But I've got some hard maple and some other assortments just if I wanted a project or two. You can probably price with the local meals are getting a new general area. Like tomorrow they'll have it up the reason why my dad did not cut that lumber back in the day was it didn't cost him hardly anything to have it cut. And he was convinced that soft cedar had a bigger chance of having something in there too mess up a blade. I still have a fair amount of cypress from out of Kentucky..

I've got to decide which small chainsaw to dedicate to one though, but I will have one before next spring. Debarking with an axe is just too hard and time consuming. Its so important to minimize the grit with these band blades. They are reasonably inexpensive anyway. And that is something I didn't realize !!

      Not too close. Just below St Louis Mo. Right off the Mississippi River. Cedar would be good for what you want. But I'd go with as pure red cedar as you can find and preferrably a full 5/4 thickness. The white will rot away pretty quick against the moist dirt. Good luck finding the product you want Jan !!

    Cedar? No, it's Juniper (Juniperus virginiana, most likely). Using the term Red Cedar here is a misnomer. We have been lied to by the wood industry. They should know better. You can know better by looking it up. That looks like a great sawmill.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do like the Frontier, though I wish I'd sprung for the bigger OS31. These are, in my opinion, the top of the line for the lower level band mills. Juniper is correct, but the general acceptance of the term 'red cedar' is all you hear in this area of the Midwest. If I was to label it 'Juniper' in the local marketplace, they'd think it was something exotic !! Then I'd get complaints that is just red cedar, not something fancy. LOL. Its like the old saying, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do"... Its an easy wood to saw and smells great while sawing too. Thanks for watching and adding the interesting input, it is appreciated.

    WHY USE CEDAR WOOD?
    Cedar is durable, sound resistant, a natural insect repellent and one of the most beautiful woods on our planet. God bless cedar and Tractorman for this video.

  • @rickerose541
    @rickerose541 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why did you cut your slabs so thick?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well on some logs the small end is so small compared to the large end. So to center cut the lumber out of the log, the first two slabs cut 90* from each other are used to center up the center of the log so the lumber is center cut and not cutting up and out of the grain creating a 'cathedral' cut grain pattern in the board. Certain materials when cut flat right up the level of the log as it lays on the bunks (cathedral cut) will literally split the tips of the pattern out of the board during the process of drying. So to eliminate that flat cut, you elevate the small end of the log to where the center of the log is level with the center of the log on the big end. On certain logs, that creates a thick slab due to the exaggerated change in diameter from one end to the other. Make sense...?? Probably not the best explanation.
      Another thing is that I'm not too concerned about a thick slab because they will be cut with the buzzsaw and processed into firewood anyway..the cedar becoming kindling. And another point, flat sawn lumber has a much better tendency to 'cup' pretty badly as well. All the grain shrinks quicker from the outside of the boards as its releasing its moisture and that makes it want to curl up the edges. Now these are just my own observations mixed with my own opinion and not to be taken as gospel. Thanks Rick for the thought provoking question !!

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It varies from place to place. I know there must be a big market in Florida. But I'd put an add on FB Marketplace and go from there. Some prefer slabbing and leaving live edges on nice thick ones. Ohers use colored epoxy to fill otherwise impossible to work with. I think in my area I could sell just about anything lumberwise.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually with those thicker ones Randy, I cut them into about 12" long pieces then throw them into the normal wood shed. Then during the winter, they come out along with the wood for me to split into kindling for the hearth, furnace and stove. A really slick way to do it. Always have some available all winter long.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably the water trace of the cooling stream that runs on the blade. These were some pretty good cuts that'll require just one pass with the planer to be ready t use. The camera doesn't do it justice.

  • @mgbill793
    @mgbill793 ปีที่แล้ว

    You wasted some narrower boards on the slab cuts.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually pull the thicker slabs off the slab pile to debark while laying flat, then resaw. It's easier for me while doing it by hand. That minimizes the blades contact with the sometimes gritty/dusty/dirty bark. When I get an actual debarker for a chain saw, I'll debark the logs first. But even though I DO toss some thicker ones, usually oak, it all goes through the buzz saw for the heating wood.
