Great Vid! I visited my first sawmill around 1980 or so and was very fascinated by mill-cut, air-dried lumber Back in those days - cool mill's like this was barely even a dream!. The great furniture maker George Nakashima always took his logs to a band-sawmill. Had a huge trove of drying boards in the basement below his shop. Nice to see your mill in action!
I bought an LT 20 about 30 years ago for a 90 acre forested property my ex and I owned. It worked very well. I think I paid about $5,000 for it. the LT 20 was a true portable mill but we set it up as a semi-permanent mill in one location. I really enjoyed working it. A friend cut wood and made himself a small cabin on the back of that property. He built up on a hillside and had a great ocean view! Small mills are great and provide lots of potential for many projects!
I have gotten into a routine over my morning coffee each day of watching the milling of logs and also, on the other end, fine furniture building. These are terrific videos, FLR, and you clearly invest a lot of time setting up your camera shots and describing your actions. Thanks for that. I look forward to watching your videos on beekeeping! Watching you struggle with the muscle part of this mill, makes me appreciate the HD30 I had 20 years ago! The hydralics were well worth the added cost of the mill, we really enjoyed running it, it had a seat on it, and we cut 2000 to 3000 bd ft a day when we had stacked logs to work with. Man, put a 2 ft piece of 4" rubber hose on the sawdust chute, and put that dust down closer to the ground, will make it a lot more pleasant when there is a breeze! Beautiful cedar lumber, I can't believe you will just use that on a shed, I made many solid cedar cedar chests out of Missouri cedar shorts I bought from a friend that lived near the Country Music town in Missouri!

If I were you, I'd have found a way to attach a bucket to that dust spout and collect that dust. Sew some of that cedar saw dust into a pouch or two (or 3 or 4...) of a tightly woven fabric and leave them laying around the house, wow. My nose would just be in heaven.
I've seen those pouches for sale at Farmer's and Flea markets at about $2-$4 a pop. And the people selling them had 100's of them. 100 pouches at $3 (avg) is $300. For cedar sawdust that gets thrown on the ground.

There's a cedar in a park near me that's at least 30 inches in diameter. It's the biggest eastern red I've ever seen. This one was definitely a nice specimen though.

That's exactly what it is. It's not worth the time messing with it. The white is about rotten and it had metal in it. It was known yard cedar and rotten..... I'm not saying.... It's just that I see so much cedar that this is plain junk to me. At 53" logs I would have bought it for two 4" logs (cuz of the rot) or maybe a 4" and a 5". So a $1.92 and wasted time trying to saw it for mulch and ended up hitting a nail. But anyways, rotten probably not the correct term, more like worthless or crap. But he did turn it into boards for himself, so good for him.

I live in mid MO and have a farm covered in red ceder. Everyone hated them until I built two log cabins out of them and sold logs for another cabin. Luckily for me I have very rocky ground and the trees are deep red almost purple with hardly any white.
I used to live between Rolla and Salem. We had lots a cedar. The land was useless for crops but ok for pasture. We had cattle goats and a couple of horses. Chickens too.
They could hate how much they want bro, but cedar is very in demand wood...termites hate em so they last really really long especially the well aged & mature trees...$$$in the bank & a good long term investment for the grandkids

I absolutely love the marbled look of that log whenever you cut off the first layer or two. That had to smell magnificent as you were cutting it. I absolutely love the smell of wood as it's being milled.
Yeah, I clean up deadfall and state/electric company trimmings along the roadside where I live for firewood, it's kinda fun and completes multiple tasks so it feels great to do! Anyone can do it for exercise and extra winter money!
My grandfather and his brothers had a sawmill in the 1930s. First, they would saw across on the butt end. Doing that, they could tell if a nail or fence wire were "buried" in the log. They could tell by looking for a discolor in the butt end. It saved them many saw teeth. (Caveat: I never asked them about cedar logs.)

I did I made a gun wall. I,e, gun cabinet that covers a complete wall. Made it completely from local cedar that I cut and milled with a chain saw, table saw, and planer. 200 year old heart pine floor that I resawed and put down. Tin ceiling. Cedar crown moulding. Not finished yet.
They say you can eat everything on a pig, well the same goes with Cedar, we use it all, the out side I give to a friend who builds Birdhouses out of them, other boards I cut 2 " thick with the live edge and build tables, and then we do the same and cut them 1" thick for siding. The first thing I'd do is coat them in Thompson Water Seal, just to help preserve the color of that beautiful wood! Hey, they make sheds outta plastic now, why waste a tree that will never grow again? Like you say, Cedars are hard to come by... Especially big ones that can give you some good planks. Most of the time, they are kinda "scrubby," and "gnarly." I bet the air smelled wonderful, as the cedar was cut! I always loved the smells of wood. All kinds!
