Yes. Heart honors Led Zepplin. They were inspired by them. We might not have Heart if not for Led Zepplin. I love them both so much. Just, enjoy!

Was a single mom, the words, to be a rock and NOT to roll meant everything to me! And my three children came out great! They are my gold in this earth, I got what I was owed! Praise God for that! That’s what this song meant to me!

The emotion I felt was seeing Led Zeppelin themselves react to this honor. They did the band and the memory of John Bonham proud, as evidenced by Robert Plant's emotional response.

First of all, I can’t even imagine how much guts it took to perform this song in front of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Hats off to to them just for that. 2nd, the arrangement of this was beautiful however look how many people they had performing this song....whole choirs. Led Zeppelin was only four guys yet each of them was the best at what they did so when they performed it the song became one of the greatest rock songs ever written.
The tribute to John Bonham with the hats was fantastic and I’m sure it was very hard for Jason to keep it together while performing.
Like you said.... this was not better but it was a beautiful tribute to four of the greatest of all time.

Reading the comments elsewhere, Ann and Bonnie were terrifed about what Jimmy and Robert would say. They even considered sneaking quietly out in advance, to disappear forever. This cover gets so close to perfection, I can only say I am weeping within 30 seconds!

I read somewhere that the reason Ann Wilson wears that long black coat during this performance is to hide her set of giant brass balls she has for being able to preform this song in front of Plant, Page, and Jones.

It brought a lot of smiles and tears to the boys. Robert said he got emotional because they didn't know Jason was going to play. Then at the end, he looks up at the words "to heaven." This is a performance of a lifetime. Beauty perfected.

" Nothing will make me feel like I felt the first time I heard Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven. When I heard that, man - that's life changing shit to me.." - Amen. Absolutely, the truth. I do believe this is the best rendition of this song, ever. I believe that’s the reason for his emotion watching the performance .... their masterpiece was taken even higher. This was singular, separate, and most importantly honoring. It was a performance based on love for the originators.

  • @marleinasmom

I don't believe Heart would want this to be considered better...
I have never met anyone who aspires to be better than their idol, because it doesn't get better.
That said, no one but Ann could have done this song justice. IMO one of the greatest female vocalists ever, and sorely underappreciated.
I swear I have a spiritual moment everytime I watch this video. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thank you.

  • @kittylynnlpn

If you seen any interviews with Ann Wilson even from way back in the 70s you would see that Led Zeppelin was one of the biggest influences on Heart and their music. This was a tribute. It shouldn’t be compared. I should be honored. I don’t think anyone else could’ve honored them better.

  • @berlyn3014
    @berlyn3014 4 ปีที่แล้ว +59

I absolutely LOVE this version, but even though this one gives me goosebumps, I'd never compare it to the original. Mainly because unlike a lot of covers this one wasn't done to compete with the original. The whole point of the Kennedy Center Honors is to do just that, HONOR the original artists. Next to the original, this version beats any other I've heard hands down.

    • @k.wilkie3814

I have to absolutely agree you could never do it better than Led Zeppelin. However I don’t think you’ll ever hear a better more epic cover than this one. When you bring Robert Plant to tears and can get a smile from Jimmy Page and JPJ you know you nailed it. Great review

Ann is such an incredible vocal talent, but what makes this performance extraordinary is her reverence to the song and to Led Zeppelin. She does not "over sing" the song! She stays very true to the original while still making it her own. VERY tough to do! I love this!

Respect man! No one will ever do it better than they did, but that being said, this is my favorite "cover" of all time! Anne's voice is so perfect and with Jason Bonham, the son of the deceased original drummer Jon Bonham, it just adds a whole another dimension! It's both a tribute to Jon Bonham and Led Zeppelin, it's also a representation of the ungodly talent of Anne and Nancy Wilson and then you add an orchestra and a choir?! Pure magic!

  • @mikewashburg4997
    @mikewashburg4997 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

One of the reasons Robert Plant looked like he was about to cry during the Heart tribute performance was because he had just prior to the show been talking to his bandmates about Jason Bonham, the man playing the drums and who is the son of the Led Zeppelin drummer, the late John Bonham. Robert Plant was best friends with the father, and told his bandmates that he regretted that they had not invited his son Jason to the Kennedy Center Honors to enjoy it on behalf of his Dad. Then he all of a sudden Jason appeared on stage with Heart and Robert Plant was overcome seeing him.

"We created more beauty out of beautiful." What a succinct, incisive, and delightful summation. It's truly not a comparison, nor a competition, but it's own thing, and having that perspective only increases the capacity to appreciate a piece of music, or just about anything else. I was a young woman when I first heard Led Zepplin perform this song. It was, on so many levels, a revelation, a transformative experience that I'll never forget it--as was hearing, all these years later, Heart's performance of this song. (As an aside, I really like the way you evaluate music and look forward to seeing more of your reactions. Thanks for what you're doing!)

LOVE your appreciation for music, for both the purity of the original as well as being open to worthy covers! As much as we all cherish Led Zeplin, and let's not kid ourselves, no one compares to them performing this iconic song, Heart was masterful in recreating it with their own touches while still paying homage to the original. Absolutely loved what they did here in paying tribute to the great Led Zeplin!!

Stairway to Heaven is not just a song my friend. It is a spiritual awakening of the utmost kind. It’s not the lyrics, which are wonderful by the way, it is the notes and how they are arranged to form this song. It is a gift from God. You can say rock is the devils music, which I’ve heard so often from my Pentecostal background, but nothing that beautiful can never be evil. Stairway is truly a beautiful gift from God. Not just to the people from the 1970’s but to all mankind. Not in a zillion years will any rap song, dumb country song or any song will never ever match the majestic greatness of Stairway to Heaven. 🤟Rock On!

I have to agree you cannot say anyone does Led Zeppelin better than Led Zeppelin themselves. The whole point of tributes or covers are to give their best interpretation of the band or the song and again I agree that this is the next best thing to the original. The vocals by Ann Wilson are testament to both Robert Plant and herself. She has to be one of the best female vocalists.

I’ve been waiting so long to watch you react! So many Reactors watch and love it BUT, didn’t know the magnification of this performance because they didn’t know:
    1. Led Zeppelin was in the balcony watching

    3. Symbolism of the boiler hats.

That's what it's so inspiring, the respect
I'll guarantee Ann and Nancy weren't up there thinking "we're going to show you how to play this song"
And Jason Bonham at the end looking up to heaven

The difference is between CREATOR and INTERPRETER. However, this is one of the greatest live performances ever recorded. Period.

You: "we created more beauty out of beautiful". That's without a doubt the best thing I've ever heard someone say about this rendition of STH. Thank you ... you nailed this!

It's great for what it is, a tribute and honor to Led Zeppelin, but they did a completely phenomenal job to boot! I still get emotional every time I watch this, and seeing the emotion on the faces of Led Zeppelin's band members AND the audience reaction just gets me.

The guy on the electric guitar is Shayne Fontaine who has played for many, many major bands. He played with Crosby, Stills and Nash when they toured in 2012. Imagine him with three guitar heroes. My feeling about this rendition is that Ann & Nancy did a phenomenal tribute - and were fully inspired by Zep.

Cover infers a note by note transcription of the song, this ain't no cover, it stands on it's own as the greatest non zeppelin version ever produced

Music is so powerful. Two versions of the same song decades apart that can both evoke so much emotion speak to how good the song itself is, and to how good all of the musicians on either version are. I write and teach poetry, and one of the things I've always said about poetry, which I think is true also for music, is that you can reach the broader audience in a stronger, more emotional way with very specific, defined images (even though it seems like on the surface that it would limit your audience and the kind of reaction they have). What you create is only half of the story for the audience, and the other half is what they bring to the interpretation with their own history. Something so detailed and deeply felt by the musicians themselves really gives you a way to sink your teeth in, emotionally speaking. Beautiful.

An absolutely brilliant reaction. I have watched this so many times, and it pulls my heart strings each and every time. For my generation (I am 63), this song was our anthem during high school. And so for us, it's significance cannot be overstated. And yes, this version certainly should and does stand apart and on it's own.

Heart has been covering Zep for years. They used to end every concert with a Zep cover, usually Rock & Roll (at least the 10 Heart concerts I've seen.) Jimmy Page saw them do one of Zep's covers early in Heart's career & he went backstage after the show & told them they had his personal permission to cover any of their songs any time. 😲

Love this version! Ann was 62 when she did this - such an amazing singer, one of my personal favorites ;-)
    Thanks for doing this!
