That's Sting on the opening and throughout on harmonies, etc. Song was written by Mark Knopfler when he heard appliance workers making fun of musicians on MTV on the TV screens in the store.
@@sukioki6983 when I bought a new car a few months ago, it has a really nice sound system in it. First song I put on to test it out was this one. Always hits so hard
This was the essence of 80’s music. It was a departure for them, away from their rock blues. You must see the official video, which was quite ahead of its’ time and amplifies the theme of the song.
Story behind it was- Mark was in a large electronics store in NYC, and he noticed the store's delivery workers watching the TVs playing in that store, and they had MTV playing on them. The workers started complaining about their jobs, how little money they make, and how they should have been musicians and MTV rock stars....
Hi guys, I love your reactions to Dire Straits… I just have to say that you need to only watch them ‘live’ that’s when you get the epic ups and downs, booming drums and fantastic guitar solos from the wonderful Mark! Please, only watch them live if you want to continuously be blown away ❤❤
I was a young college student when this came out. I still remember being at a friend's house, slightly drunk, lying in front of one of the stereo speakers and they CRANKED this song. The escalation and opening riff is SOOO good very LOOOUUD. One of the greatest beginnings in rock history. The ending, well, not so much. :-D
guys - the 1980s in London were so great - you could see U2, Santana, David Bowie, Dire Straits, Queen, Phil Collins, Prince and so many more - didn't realise how special it was until now but so thankful that I was part of it and your generation can enjoy the legacy
Small correction: Yes, that is Sting, but he is not the "lead"... Sting is doing backup vocals. The lead singer is also the guitarist, Mark Knopffler. (The lead singer is the one who sings the verses, not necessarily the first one to sing.) Cheers! ;-]
I always have to tell my story about this song. My husband and I were working as contractors for several kitchen, bath and furniture stores. Every damn time we went in the stores, all the sales guys would be standing around watching MTV on the TVs for sale. So, immediately this became our theme song. We couldn't believe it. It was like they made a song just for us.
I've been watching a lot of your reaction videos in the last few days. I love your facial expressions. The pure joy and exhilaration you both get from the music makes me enjoy it all over again as if it were new to me. Thank you for the fun and I'll keep watching for more. Much love from me to you both.
Guys, I was absolutely obsessed with this song back in the 80s. I loved it so much and if it came on the radio when I was driving to work, it was on at full volume!! Couldn't get enough of it, my friends used to laugh at me! The live version which they did at Live Aid is brilliant and I've watched it often on TH-cam. Yes, I can understand that you're a bit disappointed in it because of Sultans of Swing (studio and live), you were expecting some a bit more especially as it was building up from the start, but as I say, the live version is very good. Sting sings the opening to it. Another live version I've often watched was done at The Princes Trust Rock Gala 1986 and that was brilliant - among others playing the song with them was Eric Clapton, Elton John on keyboards and Phil Collins on drums. How great is that!! It's on TH-cam too. I enjoyed your reaction, guys, very understandable but please check out the live version.
Hi George & Patrick, there is a version of this with Mark, Sting, Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton on backing guitar. Just type their names and it,ll come up. Another song I,d recommend to you is "Renegade" by a band called Toseland. The lead singer and pianist is a guy called James Toseland. He was World Superbike Champion in 2004 & 2007. He,s also married to a singer/songwriter from Georgia called Katie Melua.
That opening is one of the all-time epic openings in rock history. It's just perfect. Sting's lead in is ethereal. Then the gradually increasing drums, the guitar stepping in and then taking over, followed by the transition to the song proper. What a perfect beginning. The rest of the song is an A, but the opening is an easy S-tier, matching up with any intro ever.
I think as you guys are on this journey : you will get to understand how music has and was evolved from the 50s onwards, Dire straits are unbelievable, the whole concept of the song was about a totally new thing, a 24hr music channel called MTV , so I think it was a subtle dig at repetitive songs around that time where the video was more important than the song, so like I said the other day, listening to Queen, led zeppelin, pink Floyd, Bowie, Dire straits LIVE you will discover that not all popular songs in the 80s had no substance or talent etc for studio mixed etc.. Enjoy your journey. G uk.
Probably Dire Straits’ most mainstream commercial song, it brought them a new audience back in the eighties. Great song but I’m like you, give me great live music any day.
This song is based on an overheard conversation. Mark Knopfler was in an appliance store and MTV was playing on a television inside the store. The delivery men stopped to watch and make a commentary about how hard they worked compared to musicians on MTV. There is an animation video of this song you might enjoy.
You guys need to understand that this came out 1985 the height of MTV . so it was kinda tounge in cheek . that's sting singing the harmony in the song "I want my MTV" great song
They had to get Sting's permission as part of the melody is the same as the police song " don't stand so close to me" ..( listen when sting sings i want my mtv ).then he ended up singing on it too.
Heres the lowdown on this great tune. This song is about rock star excess and the easy life it brings compared with real work. Mark Knopfler wrote it after overhearing delivery men in a New York department store complain about their jobs while watching MTV. He wrote the song in the store sitting at a kitchen display they had set up
Awesome reaction. Fella on the right, your reaction is symmetrical to what mine was. My mum showed me this song whilst taking me to school one day when I was 11 years old. I begged her to buy me a guitar everyday until she finally did. I have never looked back.
Read the comments below, you will understand the song. It was almost a parody of some 80’s music, but it was such a great piece of music, all around, that you cannot really consider as such. It was also the theme for the MTV awards, I think in 1987.
So glad someone below in comments explained why the song was written. I've listened to this hundreds of times and never knew.Makes more sense now. Forgot Sting was on it too.
Part of the beauty of this song is the irony in the lyrics along with a crazy f'ing Knopfler guitar riff. The song is sung from the perspective of a bigoted appliance deliveryman. Alot of people freaked out on Mark Knopfler about the verse concerning the ....uhhh...homosexual rock star. What those people didn't and don't understand is that was not Mark's opinion but rather the words of the appliance deliveryman speaking through Mark. "I want my MTV" was the slogan used in the TV commercials back in the 80's when MTV was a 24/7 music video channel. Watch the video. It will make more sense.
@@harryohrn6051 Is this sarcasm? Would you be talking from the perspective of Archie Bunker or just being an ass? Because Mark was doing the former and you sound like you'd use Archie to simply excuse your own bigotry. Mark did nothing wrong. What you might do is pure ignorance.
The opening drum part is played by Terry Williams, the same drummer whom you see and hear on the live versions of Sultans, Tunnel of Love, Telegraph Road, Two Young Lovers. Omar Hakim plays the rest of the tune on this studio version.
Mark Knopfler was in an appliance store and MTV was on the wall of TVs --- He's singing about the MTV artists on the TV -- and the salesmen coming around trying to sell appliances to customers
The live versions of Dire Straits are always better than studio versions. Always. Watch and listen to “ Money For Nothing “ live available at “ On The Night “ DVD or TH-cam. It’s unbeatable. Obs : The studio version with “ I Want My MTV “ is sung by Sting, and it was the first video broadcast by MTV In history. It makes MTV fly high. The part that Sting sings “ I Want My MTV “ is the chorus from The Police song “ Don’t Stand So Close To Me “, written by Sting. “ Money For Nothing “ ended with songwriters Knopfler/Sting.
The song was released in 1985. MTV started broadcasting 1981... were they just playing records for 4 years?! lol No, this was NOT the first video broadcast on MTV, obviously! The line they use, "I Want My MTV" was the channel's slogan, how does making fun of the channel work if you're the first one to broadcast, and nobody's ever heard of the slogan?!
