I loved the episode where Sam had to quit being the face of a shady company spilling oil in Nigeria. As a Nigerian, I loved that the show openly accused the Nigerian government of being corrupt which is entirely true irl

    • @somewhat-blue
      @somewhat-blue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +103

My favourite part of that little subplot is that Cerithium (like the name of the fictional oil company) is a kind of shell - like Shell, the oil company that is ACTUALLY responsible for environmental destruction in Nigeria. They got about as close as Apple would let them to just naming names on the show, and I kinda respect that

Higgins’ wife in the show is his real life wife. The last names of the Richmond players are people from Sudeikes’ life as well. And “Beard After Hours” is based on the Scorsese movie After Hours. And Beard references Back to the Future with the “Ronald Reagan” line.

I believe that the wonderful challenge to Rupert by Ted to a high stakes game of darts also includes a "Princess Bride" reference. Ted "remembers" that he's not right handed and then proceeds to win... while misquoting Whitman "be curious, not judgmental." In the great "Princess Bride" sword scene, both Inigo and Westley begin by fighting with their non-dominant hand.

I do, however, know the basketball coach the character is based on, as he was also my geometry teacher that same year.

3:27 You made the common mistake of assuming that Kansas City is "in Kansas", but there is a Kansas City in both Kansas and in Missouri. And of the four barbecue restaurants mentioned, three of them originated on the Missouri side.
Also, here's more Higgins trivia for you. Higgins is played by Jeremy Swift, and Higgins' wife is played by Swift's real-life wife, Mary Roscoe. Lastly, Swift really does play the upright bass, and that's really him playing on "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)".

One more thing……when Coach Beard is leaving for his night on the town, Ted tells him “ Bird by Bird, Coach, Bird by Bird.” It is a reference to the book
Bird by Bird, written by Anne Lamont. When she and her brother were kids, her brother has a school assignment to write a paper on different kinds of birds.
Having waited until the last minute to do his assignment, he was sitting at the kitchen table with books about different kinds of birds and was very anxious. Their father walked by the table and said, “Bird by Bird, son, Bird by Bird.”

I am not sure it's an easter egg, but with all the others in the show, I would find it surprising this tid-bit was just coincidence. It's in the "Goodbye Earl" episodes post game press conference. Ted tells the story of him taking care and adopting the dog that bit him as a kid, sadly only to have him put down a year later. The dog he adopted was named Hank, short for Henry, Ted's boy's name.

I have a deep cut real life KC metro area reference that wasn't in the video and that no one mentions in the comments (unless I missed it). Ted talks about his best friend at "Brookridge Elementary." That's a real elementary school in Overland Park, KS, where Sudeikis really went to school, so I assume that the best friend's name is probably real, too, since the teachers' names are in the show.

I do wonder what it would be like watching this as an American having not grown up with this sport ingrained in our culture. As I feel it is these references and almost parodies which really make the program/show.
Straight away afrer just a few scenes of Roy Kent I remember saying to my friend: "Oh! It is Roy Keane!!" Who is still always on our screens as a football pundit... not quite the same in that way then though.
I always thought AFC Richmond was clever with its South London references: Richmond is an area of South London without a football team, the kit and stadium is clearly neighbouring Crystal Palace and the "AFC" bit has been taken from neighbouring AFC Wimbledon.
Oh and I love the 'Soccer Saturday' bits. As soon as I saw Jeff, I remember saying: "Oh Jeff! Where's Kammy?... oh there he is" although Kammy (full name Chris Kamara) is never in the studio though. Love Kammy!

I'm impressed by the scene that Sam didn't take the American soldier figure and then both Ted and Sam said imperialism. Didn't expect a US show addressing this. Respect to the writers!

The best shows always will and Ted is another level. Didn’t have to take a position. Two different truths both valid from each man’s point of view. Yes could respect and acknowledge Sam without slamming the US.

Regarding the references to musical theatre, although Waddingham is indeed a West End favorite, I heard that all - or most - of the writers are musical theatre fans and that this is the reason for the references.

Late to the party, only just started watching the show. Good collection of easter eggs both in the video as well as the comments.
I didn't see this reference mentioned: When the club arrives at Wembley and Ted tries to reassure the team it's the same size as the pitch back home (incorrectly, he learns) and then Jamie yells "Richmond", it's an homage to the scene in "Hoosiers" where Gene Hackman's basketball team from the small town of Hickory arrives at a huge fieldhouse for the state championship... and before leaving the court, one of the players yells "Hickory!"

There was a lot more references to RomComs...Roy Kent running to get back to the stadium is the end of When Harry Met Sally, The 'as you wish' of course from The Princess Bride, etc.
The thing I noticed was when Roy's niece was describing him, one of the things she mentioned was that he has a scratchy beard. When she says it it touches his beard...like he never realized it before. And later he grows his beard out...seemingly in response to his niece's mentioning it, which was very considerate of him (and a nice window into the kind of person the character is under his rough exterior.

I’d like to mention that the toy bird that Lasso plays with in the doctor’s studio is the same as in the show Mad Men, in which it appears after one of the characters has to see a psychiatrist (moreover, in the épisode Lasso sits on the sofa and asks the doctor: “Who am I?”, to which he Adde “Donald Draper”, i.e. the name of the protagonist of Mad Men). I also have a question: is it possible that the name Jaimie Tartt is a reference to the characters of Game of Thrones Jaimie Lannister and Brianne of Tartt, who have a romantic relationship during the show?
