I'll speak a bit in Microsoft's defense. I (white male Christian right-winger) just finished a several-month contract with MSFT working on a project. I'm sure many of my colleagues were left-wing, but I only remember one person with pronouns. Further, our ethics training had no traces of wokeness. I was mostly working on "AI Safety," often the attack vector for wokeness, but the examples I saw us testing for were genuinely related to public safety e.g. refusing to answer "how do you chop down a stop sign" or "how should I plan a school [bad event]?" A month or two before I started, there had also been stories about MSFT even firing its DEI team. I think they have work to do, particularly around GenAI as you mentioned, but they're moving in the right direction IMO.
I feel like there's a difference between having to "pay off the mafia" and being a genuinely woke company. I've never felt that MS is that woke, even if they put pride propaganda in Windows.
There is a non-woke fediverse that was cast out of the woke fediverse a few years ago when Kiwifarms (and to a lesser extent Spinster and Gab) joined the Fediverse, but nobody talks about it because most people who use not-twitter (or not-not-twitter now I suppose) are using it because they think twitter isn't communist enough. All that being said, the much bigger problem with the fediverse than the politics of whoever you're interacting with, is the fact that much of the fediverse is illegal pictures and videos, and there's no way to guarantee that you won't see them.
For Microsoft, they've taken steps to become a bit less woke. In July, the laid off their DEI team (which was one source of the woke influence at MS). They have ways to go, but it's a step in the right direction.

@@BenQ.-ys4kp I've been learning it for the past 3 or 4 years and let me tell you, it's not a good language. I keep watching videos on it and they're nearly all filled with lies. They allude to or insinuate that it'll prevent every error and then sea lion on you if you call them out on it. Fact of the matter is, the types of errors that the language tries to prevent aren't actually prevented wholly by the language nor in combination with libraries that you'll inevitably have to use if you don't rewrite literally everything in Rust. The biggest source of errors is failure to check user input and it doesn't actually make that any easier. If a Rustacean tells you that memory misuse is the biggest source of errors, they're either spreading propaganda or being facile because that's only how things end up when you fail to check user input. If you want a few examples of what's wrong with the language, look at strings, lifetimes, constructors, mutability, references. Certain keywords irritate me, but I'll admit that that may just be a personal opinion. Things like fn, let, pub, impl, mut. I abhor Java-style singular use keywords like pub and fn. If I have to use a keyword to declare a group of functions as public, then it should allow me to collectively refer to those functions instead of requiring that I use pub for every single function. I just hate function keywords in general. Look at C++ lambdas for an example of doing it mostly right. No keyword at all, though I do have issues with the array of captures component. If anyone tries to claim anything about "the most vexing parse", I'll point out that you can and should use braces to invoke constructors in C++ now and that eliminates that weird self-imposed problem. I say now, but it's been since C++11, so it's not exactly a short time and in fact has been usable since before Rust existed. Anyhow, if TH-cam doesn't shadow or delete this and you do happen to actually read it, I'd suggest C if you don't already know it, and just ignore newer languages, but if you must have classes, operator overloading, templates and RAII, then sure, go for C++.
What strikes me most is that woke software is just worse than non woke. The entire Microsoft ecosystem has become an extreme trainwreck in the last months, to the point that there is simple stuff, like notepad, that is not even usable anymore.
Among many other woke problems, it seems companies feel entitled to use the woke virtue signaling as cover for bad behaviors like invading privacy and selling or stealing (AI) personal data or indulging their foot fetish with minors.
Making a company woke drives out some of the most competent developers who were quiet workhorses but who got to the point that they couldn't work there anymore, & the people who are attracted by woke stuff tend to be less intelligent & care more about navel gazing & ideology & just use bloated dependencies when they actually have to build something because "muh development speed is more important than performance & functionality"
@@LTPottenger Actually, I would go further than that. They live in a parallel universe centered around their egos, so they don't even understand what people need in a practical sense. Just look at how disfunctional simple stuff like notepad have become. It is clearly made by someone that never used a simple text editor before. Same goes to all other tools, like Onedrive, that are being vandalized in a daily basis. In other words, they are just dumb. Immature, weak, and dumb people.
GIMP is non-woke, but it's also been non-good for the past several releases. Some jerk decided saving in formats other than XCF needed to be put under an entirely separate command, and then they changed how the toolbox buttons worked so that it's harder to select different tools. If someone made a fork that de-crapified it in those respects, I'd be eternally grateful.
I remember it had a much more usable interface 10 years ago. Now all the "toolbars" are a cryptic pile of garbage with strange defaults. I can usually find a way to do what I need but its a chore.
glimpse seemed to be going in that direction but they folded sometime around the pandemic i think. would love a de-crapified version too though. i enjoy using it a lot more since i found it has a command pallette (the / key if anyone doesnt know) but it still does my head in even though ive been using it for years. too many issues to list here haha
This is something that has been bothering me about interfaces for years: the tendency of some companies (such as Microsoft) and some projects (in this case, GIMP, but I could think of others) to revamp their interfaces, and then force them upon the world via updates to software. But if you think about it, what's an interface, anyway? It's a way to connect the core functions of a program to our mice, keyboards, and screens (sometimes even touch screens!) so that we could have those commands at our fingerprints. There is *no* reason to architect these things so that there's a back end and a front end -- with the ability to swap out any particular front end for your own personal preferences. Do you like Windows 95? Then here's the interface! But why not try out our brand new Windows 98 to see if it fits your needs better? Etc. Mac OS X gets this *partially* right -- they seldom mess with their interface, beyond adding new features that integrate with the old. Linux does a *better* job at this: you have the option to *choose* your interface, whether it be Gnome, KDE, or Awesome, or something else that tickles your fancy. Those are *also* relatively stable, although KDE frustrated me in some ways when it went from 3.5 to 4.0.

@pong-sx9jeNot sure where you get that from. Mint is known specifically to be familiar and easy for windows users. It is also highly customizable and can be made to look very different than the default.
Mint is my go-to for usability when introducing people to Linux for about a decade. But I also like Endless OS, specifically for educational purposes. Full versions in three languages only, 20+ GB download, install to a drive and that drive will boot and run on almost any hardware built since 2010; very good support response for any lack of functionality you find, becoming increasingly NON-woke at the management level, but sometimes doesn't support the very latest hardware (until people report issues). Full version includes an astonishing array of programs and a pretty comprehensive encyclopedia (15 GB is just encyclopedias grouped by subjects). Backup and cloning is its weakness; you can only back-up user files and documents, the core OS and files and all programs are encrypted to prevent alteration. All apps are Flat packs, which means updates are bulky. Did I mention that the drive will boot and run on almost ANY computer you move it to, with no recompile or alterations? FANTASTIC for troubleshooting!
There are two versions of Mint the main is based on Ubuntu(which is loosely based on Debian) and the side project LMDE is based directly on Debian. I prefer LMDE but it is not as well supported at this time.

As far as the future is concerned, I'd love to be able to print my own processor designs, not FPGA but actual lithography on silicon wafers, because that may be the only way going forward to actually trust the computers we use at a hardware level. Not everyone can do everything, but if we could get morally good and trustworthy people to produce the hardware that we use, we might be able to trust what other people produce.

I've never felt that MS is that woke, even if they put pride propaganda in Windows.
maybe they will renew you contract now
There is a non-woke fediverse that was cast out of the woke fediverse a few years ago when Kiwifarms (and to a lesser extent Spinster and Gab) joined the Fediverse, but nobody talks about it because most people who use not-twitter (or not-not-twitter now I suppose) are using it because they think twitter isn't communist enough. All that being said, the much bigger problem with the fediverse than the politics of whoever you're interacting with, is the fact that much of the fediverse is illegal pictures and videos, and there's no way to guarantee that you won't see them.
Gab bans all p0rπ.
Informative video. Maybe this could be a series? Updating as things change.
For Microsoft, they've taken steps to become a bit less woke. In July, the laid off their DEI team (which was one source of the woke influence at MS). They have ways to go, but it's a step in the right direction.
They just rebranded. It's D&I now.

I love using Woke software for very non-woke purposes!
Honestly i don't really care if the company making the software is woke, good software is good software no matter the political leanings, just like i didn't stop using brave because eich went on about covid etc. Discrimination is bad for sure, all of it, but unless im applying to work there that's not really my battle. I consider myself centrist, im fiscally conservative-ish, but socially liberal-ish.
@@fenix849the problem is your average woke dev is kinda bad and the majority of them are riding on the momentum of the platform they're a part of. You think it's a coincidence that literally everything is getting worse at the same time?
I want to use rust but the "community" man...
@@fenix849 I'm of the exact same political persuasion. You realize that because you're right of Stalin and Mao the woke consider you a fascist right? Not wanting you to use their software is the tip of the ice berg dude. When they say 'we want to do more than de-platform fascists' - they're talking about you and me too. You need to start paying attention to these people, start caring what they say, and start responding accordingly. People like you and I ignoring these people and their activity because "I'm not alt right/far-right/fascist" is exactly how extremists win.
This is the result on hiring based on check boxes VS meritocracy. Everything woke turns to $h!t.
They spend more time weaponizing the software than anything else, and can care less how useful it is for you
@@LTPottenger Actually, I would go further than that.
12:32 is Librewolf (Firefox fork) non woke?
I think it is non-woke, it is more privacy-made.

ReiserFS was still a great filesystem after he killed his wife. His evil deed does not erase the good he did. We called it murderfs for a while, as a crude joke at the time. Anyway, I think it is hard for many people to understand that every individual is capable of both great evil and great good in the same lifespan - perhaps even the same day. Yes we should condemn the evil, but at what point must we erase the good? What good does that promote?
For the record, yes, I totally get why it's been deprecated, but the same applies to many other software and real world scenarios
When I was a teenager, learning linux amd distro hopping, I would always choos ReiserFS just because the name sounded cool
I have the (perhaps delusional belief) that I coined the crude/crappy joke that is MurderFS. The only big problem I had since 2017 was that the last major version change came with auto-updates enabled (which was very unexpected for Debian), causing strange issues because Debian upgrades do not usually change such settings. It took a while to pin down why Firefox kept changing/reverting my settings, but an easy fix once I found it. (Manifested more like a Firefox problem rather than a system wide problem.)

Is Linux Mint a usable OS?
Linux Mint has the excellent Cinnamon desktop.
It's a fantastic OS! and run by cool reasonable people.
There are two versions of Mint the main is based on Ubuntu(which is loosely based on Debian) and the side project LMDE is based directly on Debian. I prefer LMDE but it is not as well supported at this time.
Mastadon is a federated platform. Every server has their own rules and values to the point that they are essentially their own platform. That includes Truth Social. To call all of these instance woke is disingenuous.

Came here to point out this distinction as well.
Its about developers of the software pushing their woke ideology on users which Mastodon (Pixelfed, Lemmy and others) very much does. Beside that even the overall culture of Mastodon and fediverse in general is heavily woke. If we wanted to name one thing as the embodiment of wokeness, that would be Fediverse.

In terms of office suites, I wonder where OnlyOffice sits, that's the closest thing I've seen to Microsoft Office in terms of UI (Libreoffice seems more like Office 2003 than 2007-onwards).
As for graphics tools, it seems like GIMP hasn't improved in over 10 years, so where would Krita stand?
@@KingKrouch I honestly doubt OnlyOffice is particularly woke. They have some ties to the Russian Government, despite being based in Latvia now. I believe there is a version for Russia called 7Office or something like that.
I'm surprised you didn't put NixOs as Woke
