Richard Stallman is a weird dude. I respect him because he lives the way he does, which is to avoid all of those things he finds objectionable. Most people will talk the talk, but he walks the walk. I'm not saying he's good or bad because of that, but I appreciate the integrity.

Stallman is a genius who founded the EMACS software system. It grew from a text editor into software system that could do just about anything. He became a target of the Lefty collectivists when he questioned the story of Prince Edward, Jeffrey Epstein, and Virginia Roberts Guiffre. I questioned it myself. If one goes through the details of her rape and sexual abuse accusations it is hard to avoid the impression of another Lefty takedown of a prominent male. That they took down a leader of the Free Software movement is an example of the blindness of taking down a contributor to America's software leadership and an example of how the feminist left cares only about its own power, money, and misandric agenda.

He worked hard on keeping "Lisp Machines" Lisp updated with the features of "Symbolics Lisp" (under copyright and restricted, some sort of MIT wanting to make money), sleeping under the desk to be able to keep working in the morning and fight the corporate takeover of the language. But he thought lexical scope in a LISP would be too expensive. What a mistake. It's interesting to reflect on the fact that GNU is basically an outgrowth of LISP, actually.

Stallman has said some dreadfully stupid things not related to software. He heard the criticism, recognized that he was wrong and said so. The irony it is 20 or 30 years ago, he would have been the typical lefty that took up these oddball subjects mostly because of the shock value it got from conservatives. I still remember the arguments among furries, who at one time actually cared not to be related to as being into certain things with animals just because a certain then growing section of the community was obsessed with drawing anthro characters in adult situations.
Then there's been the past decade of weebs who have had people freak out as much about their youthful looking anime girls as they do that many of them are Trump supporters. I get it, 4-chan is the dumpster pit of all vile things Reddit used to be (and in some areas still is), but really, cringe is cringe, regardless politics.
But Stallman is mostly a throwback to the old hippies. Not necessarily the first openly cringe fringe society group (the Greek cynics, literally called so as a reference to behaving like dogs, had at least a couple thousand years), they were the rebellion to what they considered a whitewashed society of the 50's. Ironically, once being the one's pushing to rage against the machine, they have become the machine to rage against.

I seen it happen with a local coffee shop chain. Sure, the guy was a felon and registered offender, but that was well over a decade, and having done time, and the guy's clearly been trying to turn his life around and showing some success. But nope, none of that mattered when it came to 'St. George', who inspired the 2020 'summer of love', and naturally, coffee shop employees wanted to wear BLM shirts to work to show their solidarity with their favorite saint. Backlash came when the owner decided it wasn't work appropriate. Sure enough, even after giving an apology and trying to explain how he can relate with St George, the BLM fanatics still wanted their pound of flesh, and used the guy's past conviction against him. All those years of trying to prove he's more than just a convicted felon, poof! Gone because of stupid activists that have no sense of nuance or basic human empathy. Any lawyer anywhere, even the fake TV kind will tell you to never apologize for an accusation - that only verifies the accusation. Anyway, leave the poor man alone. A lot of this sounds like someone is intentionally conflating Stallman innocently making a pass with the fiction of Stallman forcing himself onto various women. There is a massive difference between (A) forcibly taking what you want from someone else and (B) making the request. If any of these women want to come forward with a story of Richard Stallman cornering them and attempting to physically have his way with them against their will, I'm listening. But if all you have are stories of him awkwardly hitting on women... let me tell you something. Regardless how any of you see the man, at the end of the day he is still a man and there is such a thing as a biological imperative. There is a reason it isn't illegal to make a pass at someone, and it shouldn't be. The pass isn't where the problem starts. The problems only start when the "no" answer isn't respected. Show me he failed to respect a "no" and then we can talk. Until then, piss off.

I think it's hard to describe to people who he is to online ideologues. I think he's said those things out of an aspergarian notion of principles more than anything.

I can't agree with Stallman's once-stated views about sexuality. Quite the contrary, in fact. It seems to me that he was brainwashed, perhaps targeted by MK-ULTRA or similar institutions. Indeed, those criticisms of Stallman are valid.
That being said, his legacy as a free-software nerd cannot be understated.
1980s: Boycott of proprietary software (Apple, Xerox).
1985: Boycott of Apple for restrictive software licensing.
2001: Protest against the DMCA at the White House.
2004-2005: Protest against software patents in the European Union.
2006: Defective by Design protests against DRM at Apple stores.
2006: Protest against Microsoft’s DRM practices.
2010s: Protests against SOPA, PIPA, and internet censorship.
Ongoing: Advocacy against proprietary software in schools and public institutions.
He set all these protests up, and like it or not, we have Richard Stallman to thank for all of these victories.
Perhaps Stallman needs to check his morals when it comes to societal matters, but when it comes to software, he was and remains, correct.
