- Adding to youtube for the LEGO fans :) Original upload from vimeo: vimeo.com/78478457
These mechanisms are some of the prototypes for some of my larger projects, or mini projects in themselves:
- Drum trigger: I use this sort of mechanism a lot in pieces like Clunky Drummer where a sequence is encoded in the wide links in a chain loop. This particular experiment was intended to give a more punchy kick for a physical drum, or latch a mechanism to fire off something much bigger (I never got this working!)
- Nonlinear motion: I need to find the source I reworked this from, either a book or youtube video. The idea is that a universal joint generates a slightly elliptic motion when angled, so if you combine these together you get an exaggerated elliptic motion.
- Drum hammer: I needed something that would give some punch but not be a strain on the LEGO itself so this was a nice compromise but in the end I went for the more direct sprung hammers in Pot Drum (vimeo.com/69912771)
- Reciprocating motion: I've been trying to find a reliable way to do this for ages, but then found a really nice example online, full credit to this artist: • Reversing Mechanism
- Simple locking ratchet: reworked from 'Mechanisms for Intermittent Motion' (Bickford)
- Trigger release: this again was an early one for Pot Drum, I wanted to store up energy then release it all at one, never quite got it working as an automata, future challenge to self.
- Out of phase gears: this was made for a synthesiser tweaking machine, the gears are nicely out of phase so when attached to resonance, cutoff and various other synth inputs you get a lot of variation for pseudorandom effects.
- Mini clock: showing this working when cranked by hand. I've been working with clocks for ages so getting things this small was a real pleasure, the penny dropped when I realised I could use worm gears for a 1/20th reduction. My video of this running by itself on youtube: • LEGO Mini Clock
- Monotron knob twiddler: I'm love this little thing and am going to make more of them! Again lots of out-of-phase gears tweak the various synth parameters, it's nice because you can 'hold' the sound so it's a really exploratory experience.
- Phased drum sequence: working on an earlier generative piece I was experimenting with bringing the chain loops in pieces like Clunky Drummer in and out of the performance by pushing them back and fourth with levers.
- Surprise ending, desk toy made for a friend :) - เพลง
Imagine what Leonardo DaVinci could have made with Lego Technics

ThisIsJoel lol
ThisIsJoel ha ha
really nifty mechanisms. i particularly like the reciprocator.
KEvron
Thanks, wish I could take credit but I have to admit it was worked from Reversing Mechanism! Your videos are excellent, you have a lot more experience with intermittent mechanisms, really like lego clock complication - striking train

YEET
lmao
BOOM!
Oh... sorry bro
I love the catapult at the end
Nice! I will have to reconstruct Reciprocating Motion to figure out how it works!
The reciprocating motion is so cool 0:50 ! I din't know that you can instantly reverse the sense of rotation of a gear wheel like that, without some "sinusoidal function" effect !
*didn't
I can see a lot of these being useful for GBC MOCs.
The universal joints are not phased causing the binding of you wish to improve upon the nonlinear movement one. Simply line the ears of the joints up
Really nice!!!
The monotron Lego creation sounds a little bit like a Powerstroke deisel engine
Where’d you get the gear rack
R.i.p Lego man 2013-2013
Ok youtube, you recommended me this.
that lego figure..'wohoo'!
please make a video of how to make the machine from the minute 1:00(i'm a inscribed) please
Few years later.Lego mindstorms automatic motor:Allow we to introduce myself.
im tryng to build a arm with gears but im not using the motors of power functions, do you think is posible??
Yes, it's a good way to learn about mechanisms. The LEGO Technic bulldozer and digger sets usually have a simple lift arm - they use worm gears to stop the arms falling under their own weight. Also the old project books have some good inspiring ideas in them lego.brickinstructions.com/lego_instructions/set/8888/Idea_Book
Hi RoLeon Gamer17 Your question inspired me to make a little video about mini robot arms. th-cam.com/video/zTXQqBvHktQ/w-d-xo.html
Alex Allmont XD and thanks dude ;)
RoLeon Gamer17 Darth Vader arm prop should give you a good idea how to do it
Cool!
3:56 a lever, that's useful. Put some gears on it.
Good
why did you make an air raid siren?
You know where you need a reciprocating motion machine for?
For click games like cookie clicker😂
Bro were did u bye those toys
Cool
Were do I buy the parts to build the reciprocating motion?!
Thx
I don't have a parts list but I bought most bits from bricklink
3:35 it actually sounds like morse code _ _ _ . . . _ _ _ S O S
dude it cool and all but the least you could do is show us how to build it
I made a handpowered chainsaw
How to bild a mini clock?????? pliiisssss
Here's my design, you'll need Lego Digital Designer to load the LXF file :) www.alexallmont.com/files/Mini%20LEGO%20Clock/

That is the most beautifully adorable clock I've ever seen
Mini clock are neat!
Marvelous mechanisms of dexterous inventor
It's just amazing !
oh man! this very cool mechanisms !
4:00 this is a cool prototype of catapult
I want to make that clock ._.
See my description for th-cam.com/video/eJbSPpCjXwc/w-d-xo.html I've included LEGO Digital Designer plans you can use
No idea how I ended up here in 2019... Cool stuff!
These is so awesome!! more of this!
Thats so satisfying
Nice creations!
The last one is most fun
Bravo on the clock!
My favourite is the clock
Good job
wow youre really great at cogworks !👍
3:00 what have you made
useful constructions
some of these are great for RB guns
I realul like the clock and that "drum thing" :)
Thanks! If you like the drum machines check out 'Pot Drum' on my vimeo channel vimeo.com/69912771
From where do you get those gears?
You should make a how to video
excellent.... Actually I too wanted such kit... I am working on some mechanisms... Please let me know what is the name of kit.... It will be really helpful to me...
Thanks...:)
Sidharth Parmar it's all just old lego technic I had, not a particular kit. Have a look on bricklink.com to get particular lego pieces nice and cheap :)
Cool!
Do an analog clock!
2:07 Building Instruktions?
3:09 Y'all better not break the clutch when you rev like that again.
I wondered what he would do with that Lego guy
2:06 realy intressting 😮
2:47 sounds like music for the joker
Cool
i qant tutorial for that clock one
Is this made by klutz book?
3:08 it sounds like a car
Sounds like 4AGE
OMG I'm a synth fanatic and somehow it turns out a monotron shows up in the video
Lol dont look at my search history
