  • This model is a dual purpose dolly and panning rig for a GoPro HERO Session camera.
    It uses a single chain to control both the linear movement of the camera (dolly) and/or the rotational movement of the camera (panning).

    I think people are missing the point this isn’t supposed to be functional cinema camera gear, this is just a cool engineering concept with an interesting mechanism

    i feel like a heavy base and some powerfunctions/mindstorms motors with some reduction gearing would make this 10x better

    Adding motors will make it nicer and smoother.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. Adding motors does make it a lot smoother than cranking it by hand, although the slack in the chain is still a bit of an issue.
      I did make this model RC at one point, but I didn't take a video of it. I just used some M-Motors and worm gears and the IR parts - nothing too fancy.

    Nicely Done!!! I suppose we could make it longer and also motorize it with a couple motors, and if we use a programmable brick like the NXT or the EV3, then it would be a very useful rig to get some really smooth shots!

    pretty cool but if you want it to be smother, use bigger gears

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Vincent Nitz - Agreed. However bigger gears mean that you need more chain links because it takes more links to get around the gears. These were all the spare chain links that I had. To get it even smoother I think it might be better to use string and pulleys instead.

  • @hazard7732
    @hazard7732 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Can you make a longer, maby even more stable upgrade?

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unfortunately I don't have any more Lego chain links to be able to make this any bigger/longer, but if you have some you could give it a try.
      I'm not sure how to make it more stable/smooth without having to make it a lot more complicated. I think that adding more weight might help, and some way to lock the shuttle to the track might help too.

    I'm a complete novice with Lego but want to create a magnetic system that moves Model cars along a road. I'd like to use Lego chains with a cog at each end so they turn perform a U turn and travel in a loop. The system needs to be controlled automatically so a motor is required. Theres a system called magnorail but this is near impossible to impose on my model railway as the turns are a minimum of 6cm and won't accommodate into the area I require. Using small Lego cogs I can do this however am unsure whether it can be powered with a motor.
    I understand my request may be a little odd to understand but if you look at magnorail on TH-cam you may see what my intentions are. Merry Christmas

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have taken a look at the Magnorail system. You should be able to use Lego chain links and Lego gears to achieve something similar. The Lego gears come in a range of sizes, with the most common ones between 8mm and 40mm diameter - of course you can use multiple gears to simulate larger diameters. You can either use the official Lego motors to drive the gears and chain, or you could use another type of motor if you are willing to modify the Lego parts a little bit. You can also glue some rare-earth magnets to the chain, and you would have to create your own channel to guide the chain like the Magnorail system does.
      Check out some of my other videos to see how I use Lego motors to power the Lego gears.

    I want to buy the chain links used on this video but I found it difficult because there are some different versions and I don't know which one should I buy, 14696, 1311a or 1411b.
    What are the differences between them?
    Thanks!

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chain links used in this video are part 3711 (which has an alternate number of 14696). www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3711
      Apparently there was a slight change to the mold during production. I don't have any of the older ones to test, but both versions should all be compatible with each other.
      I don't know what parts 1311a or 1411b are as I cannot find them in any online Lego references/catalogs.
      Oh, and to quote Sariel:

      @slfroden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Cyrus Serrano - You are correct, unfortunately it does shake a little bit. This model is just a proof-of-concept, and further refinement could definitely be made to improve it.
      I think it is shaky because I was turning the cracks by hand, and Lego chain links around small 16-tooth gears aren't the smoothest either. Some changes that could be made would be to use larger gears, use motors to rotate the gears, create smoother rails and add wheels to the shuttle, and as you suggested, add some weight to stabilize it a bit more. Another idea is to remove the gears and chain and use string and pulleys instead.

    The design is amazing but of course lego isn't the best source of materials. But with some professional linear bearings and belts and two steppers and an arduino, you could make it a very compact multifunctional slider/panner.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jens Hendriks - Agreed. But then it wouldn't be a 'Lego Technic GoPro HERO Session Camera Dolly and Panning Rig', it would just be a 'GoPro HERO Session Camera Dolly and Panning Rig' (without the 'Lego Technic' part). Lego is great for creating quick prototypes and testing concepts, and for being able to reuse the pieces in other models, but if you want a professional grade solution then other materials and technologies are probably better in most cases.

    @schwarzerritter5724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the advantage of this compared to putting it on tracks?

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moving a camera on a track typically creates a "dolly shot" or a "tracking shot" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_dolly ).
      The mechanism in this video enables you to create a dolly/tracking shot or a "panning shot ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panning_(camera) ), or both at the same time.
      By varying the speeds of the two cranks (either by hand or by attaching motors), I can get a wide range or dolly/tracking shots and panning shots, or a combination of both.

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get a panning shot if you connect the panner(?) to the dolly wheels. Changing panning speed is a problem though. Maybe if you make a belt gear you can put the belt of different gears to change speed?

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, you could do that, but then it is no longer 'just' putting it on tracks, and you have added more complexity.
      When I originally saw this mechanism (link in the description), I thought that it was a neat and elegant little mechanism and I wanted to see if I could recreate it with Lego pieces, and give it a purpose by turning it into a camera rig.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Louis - Thanks for the suggestion. Part 53992 isn't very long, and from my experience with this part it always seems to be a bit squashed rather than completely circular, so it isn't very smooth either.

    • @jelpy
      @jelpy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      slfroden that is a problem of them. I wonder if you could cut them and stick them together to form a longer one.

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Louis - Possibly, but they still wouldn't be very smooth. Also, if you are going to 'make' your own parts, I'm sure that you could find some other (non-Lego) O-ring or drive belt, and you could use metal pulleys and bearings, and use a metal frame to make it more rigid, but then it isn't really Lego any more.

    bruh i can make the exact same cinematic fx just by sliding my phone across a table and slightly turning it, and its probably more stable and smooth too. this is pointless

      This model is a proof-of-concept.
      It is not a finished and polished model.
      Could it be bigger/longer? Yes.
      Could it be made more stable? Yes.
      Does it illustrate a concept? Yes.
      Is it pointless? No.

      Back2Black absolutely not lol dont get me wrong this stuff is cool and i could never make anything like it, now that im thinking back to my lego days this could have came to use making stop motion animations of lego, out of something thats made of lego, but my point still stands that its easier to just glide your camera across a smooth surface lol

      @MrB4MV101 If you want to make an hour long video or something like that, if you use this LEGO design, you won't have to hold your camera for a long time.
