      The rice hack is a myth!! If rice is sitting in an opened
      container on a humid day doesn't start to absorb
      water or softened Then why would it absorb water
      from your products?
      Also, NOT TOUCHING your product, so even if it did
      absorb (which it doesn't), how would it be any more
      effective than just leaving it uncovered and letting the
      moisture evaporate naturally?
      And finally, the only reason why your phone or
      electronics will work after leaving in rice is be what
      breaks your phone if the electronics inside are short
      circuiting. And leving it alone and NOT TURNING IT
      ON while all the liquid evaporates is what saves it. lt's
      NOT rice absorbing water

    The cup in the movie IIRC was made of wax, and Gene had to actually chew it until the take was over. Obviously sugarcraft has evolved in leaps and bounds since then but you have to imagine if Gene had the choice between a well handcrafted wax version and a sugarcrafted “Babish” version, he’d take the latter.

      Having seen photos of some of the amazing creations my great grandma made with sugar in the 60s, I have to imagine they could’ve produced a sugar variation for the film. However, keep in mind they also had to make dozens of the teacups in the scene. I imagine wax made the production much faster and more uniform.

    • @StriderZessei
      @StriderZessei ปีที่แล้ว +320

      That, and the intense heat from studio lighting would likely have melted the sugar cups.

    • @Konarcoffee
      @Konarcoffee ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Probably the wax version TBH. Wax is pretty nice to chew on and better than have to navigate a sticky and sharp sugar that could make you sick with multiple takes

    • @hermeticbear
      @hermeticbear ปีที่แล้ว +54

      yeah, it was probably wax because it was easier to make and it could stand up to the rigors of filming on a sound stage. I've met some master sugar sculpture people who learned from masters back in the 60's and the only difference in work and techniques is the preferred and popular styles and appearances.

    Proposal: Maybe we could combine the sugar glass cup idea with the sugar gum? Instead of beeswax, maybe the gum could be molded directly onto the cup so we already have a barrier built in with extra flavour and crunch on top of it. Could probably give it better structural integrity too. Granted, I'm no food expert and this probably will end in a lot of sweet nectar spilling all over my kitchen counter but it's worth a shot, right?

    This makes me so happy. I've always loved the books and the movies (yes even the one from 2005, though I like the original more), and I've been fascinated by the various types of sweets in the book and movies, especially the room with the field and chocolate river where everything is edible. It would be amazing if you tried making other sweets seen in the book or movies, but it's understandable that most of them are impossible. I'm already so happy that you made the teacup flower.

      I'm gonna be entirely real with you.... I don't know why the Johnny Depp version gets so much hate LOL. I was never obsessed with either movie, both felt kinda creepy to me. Part of it was that Gene's version was filmed during an odd era where pretty much all films at the time seemed a little creepy; Johnny Depp's version was creepy for some very obvious reasons (the whole movie was quite dark). That being said, I don't think either of the movies are bad. In fact, I think they both have their own unique charm. As of recently, I know the internet has been clowning on the new Wonka movie, but I thought it looked really cute and magical and wonderous, which is what I WANTED from the first two movies but never really got it. Of course it's a little "cringe", but like... isn't anything weird kinda inherently cringe? That's the beauty of it!!!
      I think the internet is just bitter and sad, so don't feel too ashamed for liking the 2005 version. A LOT of people liked the 2005 version; people are only just now hating on it because they're either addicted to nostalgia bait, or because they hate Johnny Depp because Twitter told them to. Nobody has once stopped to consider that maybe the entire story itself, books and movies included, is just downright wacky!! It's fine to be wacky, and honestly, THAT is what I gathered from ANY version of the story. You can't help liking what you like!
      (Edited for clarity)

    I feel like sugarwork was close, but had you tested using isomalt instead to see if that would have held? And for a cup and saucer, I kept thinking that the teacup itself needed a flat base that could sit atop the saucer without sticking to it. But I'm so fascinated by the gum paste version that I'm applauding how much work and effort and testing went into this! Thank you, all!

      A lot of the popular ones need proof that the person asking to take it down is the person on the website and the companies can’t do that legally, so some info stays up. It’s also always a losing battle since every time you move or change your phone number they can update your info and put it back up claiming it isn’t the one you asked to take down so you have to go through the whole process over again.

They're also a little less brittle so it may be something you can bite and it not completely shatter. It would probably get a little sticky with the tea/nectar though

    Hey guys - My mom works with fondant sometimes.. here's a trick - you don't need to dry it for 3 days. Overnight is enough, but you have to place it in direct microwave light so that dries up. You don't start the microwave, you just keep the microwave door open just enough to the point of closing.. so that there's little gap and the light stays on. Now your fondant objects can stay like that overnight to dry the moisture out. I live in a pretty humid place and this works perfectly fine for her. Try this next time. :)

    Please do not dry your wet electronics with rice.
    A) Surface Area is key in such an endevour, and the enemy of surface tension/vapour pressure. The area inside the phone is very small, egress is narrow, the dehumidification of dry rice really won't do a lot to accelerate the drying process.
    B) The drying process is where most of the damage takes place. Corrosion and mineral deposition builds up as the water evaporates and is the main cause of damage to the device.
    If you can't take your ideally still-wet phone to a repair shop to get them to clean it internally, shut it off if it isn't already and dunk it in 99% isopropyl alcohol for some time. The alcohol will sap any water that got inside away into the bath, as well as any dissolved minerals along with it - and is non-conductive so won't cause shorts. It also dries quicker and cleaner.
    Do not attempt this if your device has a seperate backlight layer from the LCD, as in the non-OLED nintendo switches. Liquid will get in between, will never dry, and will look bubbly forever.
