    This is seriously amazing. I will be doing this for the table we have outside now. The top boards are a mess, so replacing them with this ultra cool top will definitely have us partying this summer. Thanks so much for teaching the world how to make home a happier place!

    nice one thanks. I keep getting told a table would be too heavy and that I'd need to do a fibreglass layer then very thin layer of concrete, as opposed to mesh and rebars. You've convinced me to try one.

    If you keep an old worn out diamond pad you can use your polisher to fill bug holes. Just mix your fill paste and apply it to the surface. Then run over the substrate with the polisher forcing the paste into the holes. *a fine pad and a slower speed works best, work in small sections* Pete nice work, cool project!

    Josiah Dude, As was often said around the squadron "Sierra Hotel (SH or Shit Hot)! I'm a trauma surgeon by trade and woodworking has been may life long hobby. I've been scared to tackle concrete for some reason. I usually just hire a bunch of guys. So I was surprise when I can across you site by accident, now I can't leave it. Your projects and your calm deliberate instructions have taken away most of my fears of working with concrete. I've already made the lighted cooling table for six and the fire pit already. Next I want to try an expansive counter top for my out door kitchen.Thank and keep up the inspiring videos.

    You can use a typical palm sander as a concrete vibrator, just move it around the exterior of the mold and it will take care of the honeycomb issue and reduce patching time. If you want arm comfort and don't want to worry about chips on the edges just install a chamfer in the mold, 45 degree chamfer strips can be purchased at any DIY store in different sizes, and you will have a clean custom look edge.

    DIY Pete, love your work man! A few questions if I may: 1. What does this table weigh, estimation? 2. About how much would a person expect to spend on this project? Again estimation is fine. Thank you sir!

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! So if I built it again I would use a long and narrow sink for the trough instead of concrete. This makes the project way easier. The sink I ordered for my new table was $150 and is stainless steel ( 30x6 ). The concrete will be around 6-7 bags or so at $6 / bag. The melamine will be around $35. The acrylic about $20. Lights etc $35 , plus the base. That is a quick estimate :) Cheers!

      Hey Randy! Thanks so much! Gosh I would say a solid couple days for sure. Cost in the $200-$300 range. I've done quite a few LED tables since. This one has been sitting on the patio up at the cabin since it was built. It is currently covered with a few feet of snow, but has held up amazing! You'll have to build one! --- One thing I might do differently is drop in a metal trough instead of doing the trough out of concrete. That would be much easier.

      DIY PETE Would your led lights idea work to the concrete fire pit table you did? Or is the heat too much for the led lights?

  • @deanafreeland2628
    @deanafreeland2628 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would it be safe to add led lights to the concrete fire pit table you made? I love the led light idea! How warm does the fire pit get? Is it mainly for looks or does it actually keep help keep everyone warm? Is there anyway to control the temperature? Also I noticed when you mixed the concrete for you dining table your mix was quite dry vs the concrete mix for the fire pit table. Is that because you used The concrete mix that has the reinforcements in it is that way it looks drier and not wet as the other concrete mix?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The gas fireplace does actually keep you warm. Just do one with enough BTU's that it does. You can control the amount of gas let out which would make it warmer. As for how it was mixed, I used 2 very different types of mixes. -- but would recommend quikrete 5000 for future projects. LED lights could go around the outside perimeter of the table below the surface potentially, but will need to stay away from heat. Cheers!

    Ok Pete first may I say kudos, this is a beautiful table. I have two questions. One, can there be a nice wood (or other more affordable material) alternative to the concrete? And two, did you add a drainage to the bottom of the ice reservoir?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad Wicklund Hi Chad! You could certainly create a top out of wood for this project. Tile might be a possibility as well. Yes, I did add drainage to the ice reservoir but didn't really go into it much. Let me know how your build goes, I'd love to see how it turns out! - Pete

    I have seen this when first posted it, I love it! I always come back to it just to look at it. I wanted to know how you get the power to it. Where are the cords that go into the outlet. How is it that your table is in the middle of no where and no cords for people to trip off of. How do i go about this? Does it operate by batter. Please explain

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elite Child Hi Elite! The cord is attached to one of the legs and then goes flush with the deck. You can either run an extension cord along the deck (and tape it down) --- or I have run the cord through the decking and to a plugin. There are kits that run off AA batteries as well. I have a battery setup for some of the tables and bar carts I've made. (You can order the battery kits for about $50 off Amazon. The plugin versions are about $30 on Amazon.

    Great Video. How do you drain the water from the melting ice? Does it just drip out of the holes? Are those led lights water proof? Is the ice right on top of it? Or did you put a acrylic glass sealed bottom. I def want to try this. Thanks for sharing.

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      coolmjr Hi! I originally set buckets underneath to drain the holes but have since hooked up some pvc piping to run from the center and then into a bucket (or through hole in deck). The LED lights are waterproof and I've left them out for an entire year without issues. (Montana winter, spring with rain, etc. I do put the ice right over the lights. You could seal things off with acrylic though if you'd prefer :) Good luck! Let me know if you build it!

      Hi! It's been sitting outside about 3 years or so now and I throw a coat of sealer on it each spring. Still looks very nice. Once thing I would do differently --- is to buy a metal trough instead of doing the trough out of concrete. It cuts down on weight and makes it much easier to work with. I just had a hard time finding something affordable online to share with my readers.

    Pete, I just purchased my first home in April and have a huge list of projects that i want to complete and this table has just been added and moved up the list. I know i don't speak for just myself when i say thank you for giving us step by step and inspiration. I will ask one question, have you given it any thought on adding a recess edge around the cooler to allow the clear plastic to sit flush. Could even add finger holes to pop out. Thanks again

      Hello Ishag, congratulations on your new home! I certainly gave thought to having it flush, and it would be pretty simple for you to do. I try and typically keep things as simple as I can to relate with more beginners, but I'd definitely recommend modifying it in your case!

    Can the trowel in the middle be wider if wanted? Also can a standard orbital sander be used if I don't have a wet polisher? I have done three of your projects so far and I want to tackle this one...

    • @DIYPETE

      +TheJerseyDigger Hi, yes -- the trough could be wider. An orbital sander can be used. A wet polisher is ideal for cleaning up around the acrylic panels, but you'll be able to get a good looking table with a simple sander as well. The 1/2 inch piping allowed room for the LED wiring to still go toward the sides. I filled the gaps with silicon.

    Hi Pete, I really enjoyed this video. It showed me some possibilities for a backyard I was going to do. Really modern looking & way cool! For the LED lights underneath, is there something else I could do? Or is adhering the lights with silicone the best way to install the lights? I was thinking of gluing some hooks or clips in case I needed to change the lights out. What do you suggest?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      E.J. Katigbak Hi E.J.! -- I actually figured out a much better way than the silicon. I bought a couple packages of the really strong velcro from home depot. It has a super strong adhesive and so it sticks well to the underside of the concrete. I put the LED strip between that piece and the other piece of velcro. This way the lights can easily be removed at any time. Installing them is easy too. The velcro has stuck great all spring, summer, and even this winter outside. So I'd say it is a great solution. Please send me a photo of your table. I CAN'T wait to see what you create E.J.! Cheers - Pete

      I would not do the trough out of concrete, and would find a 6" by 30" or so stainless steel sink on Amazon instead. --- you could basically do a knockout out of foam for the trough, similar to this concept. ( plans for table top are also available ) www.diypete.com/make-concrete-pub-table/

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I use the mesh and it's used as re-enforcement. It is somewhat similar to wire fence and is commonly used in concrete sidewalks. 3/8 inch re-bar could be used if you'd prefer.

    What if you wanted a color other than concrete gray? I guess you could add a dry dye to the mix, but what about when you slurry it to fill in the holes after the pour? How do you get a slurry with matching color? Or is it better to do it gray and stain after the slurry/sanding?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mayela! You could either add a dye ( liquid or powder ) -- into the mix --- or you could do an acid stain or dye after the process ( more topical ). -- If you mix integrally to a color other then grey ( green, brick, etc ) --- you can mix the pigment into the slurry mixture and do your best to get a matching color. It really depends on the look you are going for. I've done both numerous times. Sounds like you have a fun project ahead of you!

    and how do you empty the water from the melted ice in the middle?
    since turning table upside down is out of question, there should be some whole with lid in the bottom, or even better some kind of faucet applied to take water out

    • @justinkou898
      @justinkou898 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kanenas Ithaki I'm guessing through the 2 PVC holes in the trough.

    • @kanenasithaki4669
      @kanenasithaki4669 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Justin Kou didn't see them but even if they exist it's not enough. If there's no valve it'll spill on your feet while you sit by the table. I'd it's not placed outside it should get normal plumbing pipes to take water away. In that case the valve isn't needed

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kanenas Ithaki Hi Kanenas! Thanks for reaching out. The holes where I eventually installed piping are made in the concrete trough -- but the piping is not shown in the video. I Ran piping from each and then did one downspout so it can drip in a bucket. Ours is outside and this works real well. However, use your imagination and do the plumbing to best fit your situation. Obviously if indoors you'll want to do a little more. --- I did the trough out of concrete to keep the costs down for other DIY'ers out there. But, if I were to do it again, I'd simply do a foam knockout to create a hole in the center of the table. I'd then put a stainless steel trough in. One without holes that you could simply pull out and empty in the sink. I couldn't find an affordable option when I was building this, but if you come across one let us know! The table would be much lighter without the concrete trough as well. I'd love to see your version of this table! Cheers from Montana - Pete

    Hey Pete - would this technique work for a kitchen counter top with built in sink?

    • @petesveen
      @petesveen 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Liam! A similar technique certainly could be used for a built in sink. I'd recommend doing a little more research on re-enforcement -- and seeing if there are some videos on concrete built in sinks that could provide a bit more info. You'd also want to make sure the bottom of the sink has some sort of an angle to the drain so the water moves on it's own. Sounds like you have a unique project ahead!

    Just a quick question I'm looking at your mold and I see that the same effect can also be achieve with pressure tread wood as well question is how to drain the water out of it when the ice melted Inside the table... ? or will you even go that rout...(wood)?

    • @angelesshockley11
      @angelesshockley11 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Oscar Crisanto You can use a clear urethane to protect the wood. Use several coats, and make sure it is applied correctly. Just drill a couple holes for the ice to drain, you could always hook up some tubing to direct the flow of water where you want it. You could possibly line the trough with plexiglass and seal it with some clear silicone.
