    That mini Slave I is actually the most impressive part of the whole set to me. I actually want LEGO to release it on it's own, or at the very least a very similar version. The fact that the designer was able to capture all the essential details, including the moving flight stabilizers and still managed to make it be able to carry not only a Boba Fett figure but also carbonite frozen Han as well. I aspire to be that good! 😁 Great review as always Jang!

    As a teenager, there are three things I want in a Lego set, first and foremost is a fun build, second is the play value, even though most people my age wouldn't, I still like to be 8 again and play with the Lego, and finally I'd like it to look good/alright on display, it doesn't have to look amazing, just not bad.

I love star wars but never have I wanted a play with a set in cloud city. Are kids really getting this to play with? I feel like everyone who's buying this is past the point of playing with it. So... why? I'm genuinely curious if there are any kids out there who play with this thing though.

    • @DonaldWWitt
      @DonaldWWitt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, I'm rather put off by the size of most Lego Star Wars vehicle set in recent years.
      Sure, it gives them great display details, but two near Kenner sized X-wings and TIE fighters are awkward to hold with my long adult arms.
      This is why I loved the latest Tank sets from the Clone Wars, 25182 Republic Fighter Tank and 25080 AAT.
      People complained they were too small, but like the Slave 1 and Cloud Car of this set, their compact builds hit all the needed design notes AND were handily swhooshable.

    I built this with my 4 year old who latched onto Star Wars after going to Disney World. He loves it and plays with it every day, more than he plays with any other set I ever got him. If you have a kid who loves Star Wars, this has to be one of the best sets in existence. Think about it: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2D2, C3P0 Vader, Lando, a variety of storm troopers and imperial figures, Boba Fett and the carbonite, (which is VERY memorable for kids), the personnel, and two ships. What's the amount of money you spend to get all of that amount of stuff in smaller sets?
    Look at the $130 Vader set...just getting Vader and 3 imperial troops is a better value? That's the reality with LEGO, you know? It does cost a lot of money compared to just buying toys. Fact is, you're going to spend a lot of money to get every major character in a modern look. And if you spend the bare minimum to get them, do you really get more play value from it?
    Let's think about this: $25 for the Vader Transformation set. $20 for the Dewback with R2D2, C3PO and a storm trooper. $10 for a microfighter with Chewie. $30 for Luke, Leia and a Storm Trooper in Death Star Escape. $130 for the only other set on sale that has Boba Fett and Slave-1 with a modern Han Solo... but maybe you don't care about Slave-1 (my kid DOES) so you could get Han in the Mos Eisley set for $40 and get Greedo instead of Boba Fett. Now I guess you need to spend like $20 to get one of those sets with additional troopers, like the Drop Ship set, to get more miscellaneous figures to have adventures with. Now how do you get Lando? $40 Snow Speeder set? But that's an old style Lando, not the modern look. In any case. Let's say you did all this and now you have a similar collection of minifigs to the $350 Cloud City set. What did that cost, minimum? $25 + 20 + 10 + 30 + 40 + 20 + 40 = $185 minimum! And that's without Boba Fett. Look at the stuff you'd have, too. Vader's Transformation platform, an escape pod, a dewback, a tiny Millenium Falcon, a tiny Mos Eisley, a tiny drop ship (or whatever came with your troopers), and a snow speeder. No, sir, you do not get a good variety of stuff to have a sensible Star Wars adventure with all those dinky sets, it'd just be random tiny things that don't go together. $350 for a substantial cohesive set with meaningful minfigs that cover virtually all the major characters is better for me. I know that many parents don't care to think about the economics of it, but it's better to plop down $350 on a massive set and get everything at once than spend $20-40 over and over again for small uninteresting builds.

    @majorchief8424 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I generally like the set but would like to suggest some improvements;
    1. Remove the landing pad; it looks awkward wedged in to the overall circular shape of the set.
    2. Use the landing pad's quadrant to make a bigger Vader vs Luke area, with another balcony and "object throwing" room.
    3. Next to the carbon freezing chamber add the iconic "hexagon" corridor.
    4. Add some antenae to the bottom so Luke can hold on after escaping from Vader.

  • @GJBricks
    @GJBricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    As always a good review and good points. I think you're right to say that it's not worth the money for the play features you get. It seems to not be able to make up its mind detailed or play oriented. To me, this would have been better sold as 3 or 4 smaller, better value sets.

    • @Humulene
      @Humulene 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GJBricks, I agree totally. The Slave One would have made a nice set, also the twin pod ship.
      This is a play set, I could see that from the early immages and knew it wasn't one I would pick up. If I gave my kids £300 and took them to the Lego Store, they wouldn't go for this with all the other sets that are out at the moment. Possibly that is because they are too young.
      Target demographic is quite narrow for this set, I wonder how long this will be available.

    • @txmqalfpdiq
      @txmqalfpdiq 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I disagree. It wants to be both so let it. I like to say to myself "If this was cheaper would I be complaining this much" as the price shouldn't be the deciding factor as to if a set is good or bad. I'd say its worth it, you get all the major scenes and a bunch of cool minifigures. Also all toy series have those really expensive playsets. This is just one of those.

    @mateypit1331 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Honestly, it's a mediocre set, the only thing I really love is that beautiful Slave 1 build. In my opinion, they should have made separate sets for the more important scenes (Dining room, Luke vs Darth Vader duel, that Slave 1, etc...) and put some exposed pins in each so after you buy them, you can connect them.

  • @RyCitrus
    @RyCitrus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I'm not entirely sure why collectors were so die hard for this set to return anyway. Sure, the original had some exclusive figures, but what else? Was it not designed to be a toy for children back in 2003? I believe the designers did the best they could've. People also forget there's not a whole lot with the source itself, being Cloud City, besides the carbon chamber and the duel. The remainder are loose rooms and hallways, making it harder to work as a toy product. Maybe the 2003 version worked for kids because it focused on the carbon chamber and the duel instead of every little room and detail.
    I'm interested into hearing your thoughts! :)

    • @TH3HY3N4
      @TH3HY3N4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree, as Jang said it was impossible to do this and not make 90 percent of people dissapointed, unless it would be ~800 bucks monster (maybe even then). I much prefer to have just tiny bits of really important stuff done separately (like the great little carbon freezing chamber set from few years back), just do a similliar set of the duel, cloud car and there, everyone is happy. Seeing this and the big Hoth set, i really hope they won't do the same mistake the third time around an make a UCS Cantina, because I feel it's going to be just as much of a letdown. I mean it's lego, AFOLs can just get the smaller sets for the figs and details and just make a huge model of their own.

      @oh-totoro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Absolutely! The huge problem LEGO has these days, is that you get so much more for your money elsewhere. $350 is a huge amount of money. Honestly, what would a kid prefer? A huge lump of plastic bricks that they will play with for a month and then get bored of. Or an iPod, iPad, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, a bike, a new television, a laptop, a stereo system, endless amounts of Blu Rays or video games, etc, etc. You just get so little value for your money with LEGO these days. And not just with this set, with most of them.

I would have LOVED to get my hands my hands on it if this set had come out in the nineties (it captures the atmosphere of Cloud City very well I think, and in my head I’m already thinking of how I could transform it into a Starfleet set, where to place the bridge, engineering, sickbay and a transporter room). Great work from the design team imo, and as always a very good and thorough review from Jang. 👌🏼

    the best things about it are the bits that aren't attached to the main structure, the 2 vehicles and the carbon freezing chamber. still, while it's not great, that still looks ok overall, and an improvement over assault on hoth. also it may be designed for kids, but when I read the review on brickset, I discovered it's full of small details that only big fans will notice, personally, I remember some key scenes, like the dining room, the duel or the freezing chamber, but the rest I don't remember that well, so there's at least half of the set that doesn't mean much to me.

    I think it should be priced as a $200.00 play set or make the carbonite room and the "I am your father" scene spaces separate $20-$30 sets.

    Good review!
    I am looking at this set, and thought it would work better as 4 or 5 partial sets. Three main sets: the dining room with some general 'nice' spaces added, a 'black set' for robot disassembly and interrogation, and the first Fight & Freezing room. Three rather large sets that could be connected in different ways (circular, line up etc). And one or two 'external' sets; the final battle scene and the landing zone, possible with the (indeed very nice) vehicles. Not bigger than this, just 4 separate sets, each about 80 dollars...

    It's certainly not bad... I feel like it would have worked and looked better though if they wouldn't have tried so hard to commit to Cloud city's circular shape and would have stuck to more conventional square shapes, maybe with a quarter of it really being the actual circular shape with also the walls and ceiling curving in.

    Personally, I think they should have just focused on the carbon freezing chamber and the weather vane. All these tiny rooms that serve no purpose to collectors or children really is a waste. I think most children would have more fun in the carbon freeze chamber pretending to freeze different figures. Also you could have Luke fight Vader.

    Interesting new look for Lego Star Wars. For the past couple years it seemed that they were shooting for larger and more realistic ships. Now in 2018-2019 they are aiming for a more play set oriented look. You can see it here, how the Slave 1 is smaller than the ones seen in the past, but I like this. Although I haven't touched Legos in some years now, it reminds me of how the sets were in my childhood (late 90s and early 2000s).

      Centaursixtysix haha exactly. I just came to the conclusion that since the year is 2019, the sets are being made to resemble the classics that started in 1999. There’s even original figures coming with some of the sets as anniversary pieces.

    I agree with your assessment of this set (great and honest in-depth-review of you - as always). Some nice work done by a designer tasked with an impossible job - but I don't see the target group for this. It isn't adult collectors or TFOLS and most kids either won't know the 40 year old movie or won't have the money or space to put this. Heck, I have a quite large house and would not know where to put this!
    What I do like (and what I hope will be a trend for LEGO in the future) are the MIDI-scale vehicle builds (I whish those were also sold seperately). The current Sandcrawler is another example of this trend. I think it is nice (and propably wise from an economic standpoint) of LEGO to make these affordable versions of bigger sets now and then.

    Ok, for me, I never had too much love for ep V, for my own personal reasons, so even if I was the target market for this, and I had the money and space, I'd have passed. I do agree with Jang's overall thoughts on the set, it's too big for being a kid's playset, and not geared towards collectors, so this set will probably be an orphan, very few people really enjoying it.
    My biggest excitement for the set is honestly the Slave I, I have always wanted lego to come out with "midi" scale sets, the minifig scale ones are too large and expensive for a college student like myself, and their minifig stuck on a chibi sets are not my flavor at all. I would love to see a whole range of ships set in roughly the same scale as the slave I, without the effort to cram a minifig into it, just give us the ships, without them costing so much that smaller collectors like myself are out of budget.
