I googled the song. Was written as a poem by a Canadian school teacher George Washington Johnson who taught near Hamilton, Ontario and fell in love with his pupil Margaret Clark (Maggie). He was 21, she 18. He wrote the poem soon after as if they were old inspired by his love from the hills surrounding Hamilton. There is a creek and old mill there. Sad story. They married in 1864, but she died a year later from TB. Johnson asked Butterfield to write the words to music soon after. It's not really an Irish fold song as you might think.

Love it-beats so much of what passes for modern ‘songs/music’.

Amazing how ones wife gets to hate the one that they once loved so much.
I love this music. I sing this everyday, my old dog, Maggie, looks forward to hearing this too. It relaxes her
Pure joy!
