40 plus years later and they are all brilliant. When Peter Sellers died, Harry sang "Bread of Heaven" at the funeral. Spike said to his manager "I hope Harry goes before me because I don't want him singing that song at my funeral". Harry did die before Spike but when the latter died his manager phoned up Secombe's widow and got a recording of the song which she played at his funeral. Humour to the last.

Great share Howard! Timeless, genius in its simplicity, the kind of spontaneous laughs in a group of friends when the giggles spark more giggles in a virtuous spiral to fall-on-floor, tears-in-your eyes, belly laughter! A tonic for the human spirit these 2 gents are, as is Parky.

I agree 100% I am 88 years old NEW ZEALANDER residing in Philippines now and my younger brother and I used to "take off" almost all of Harry's, (Neddy), "Spike" Milligan, and Terry's shows every Saturday night at our parent's house after footy (rugby) - they were our favourite comedians and we reckoned Harry was the greatest tenor singer in the world.- of course my Mum was pure blooded Welsh so we were a bit biased.
But they were great days and I enjoy youtube videos which I have discovered here. Especially i enjoy his Christian songs and hymns - pure majic and authentic - and he inspires both me and my fiancee as we look forward to serving the LORD in his plan/mission for us.
Harry's singing of "The Holy City" is unmatched by any other singer of any generation in my opinion.
RIP Harry - your quick wit, your humour and your magnificent singing will never die.

I discovered the Goons as a teenager; one of the local public radio stations used to broadcast two episodes back-to-back every week. Even when the gags came too fast to follow, or I didn't get one of the references, their energy and sense of fun swept me up. Been fan ever since, nigh on 40 years now.

Great interview, Parkinson always lets his guest take centre stage, he knows its about them not like some of today's interviewers who just will not shut up. Harry was a great Welshman with a fine tenor voice and of course one of the Goons a show to which I was addicted. Thanks for posting.

I had forgotten just how funny Harry Secombe was. I remember them all on the Goon Show and the Telly Goons, I even go back to a time when Michael Bentine was part of the team. Spike Milligna, the well known typing error, wrote some damned funny books: but his Q series of comedies were barking mad at times. Peter Sellers was a comedy genius, of course. They all had me in tears more than once.

It is sadly, a very rare thing these days for me to laugh out loud and ache from that laughter, Milligan bless his heart has had that affect upon me for over half a century and far from diminishing the laughs and aches get even stronger with time, much needed right now, bless you Spike and then there is Harry. Many years ago I had the great fortune to be his driver while he was filming a TV show in Devon where I lived at the time.
We talked a lot on those drives, I took him to a few hidden away Churches which he loved, told him how my mum had passed a few months before and how so much she loved his voice and how much I learned to love it through listening to the records with her.
He said some wonderful things which I won’t share, they are too precious to me but I will say, they shone a bright light on some very dark days. Bless you Harry, bless you.

Spike and Harry were, as advertised, fantastic. Fun fact, I attended a leadership symposium about 25 years ago where Gough was a guest speaker. He was legless drunk and after rambling past his allotted time, was escorted off the stage by security. He hadn't managed a single coherent sentence but was allowed to run his time due to his status as ex-PM.

Spike looked pretty toasted in that clip but, fair play to him, he was hilarious. Impressive leadership symposium where the organisers left a famously alcoholic war vet in the vicinity of large amounts of booze prior to speaking :p as opposed to organising a series of small group chats and book signings beforehand to positively fill up the time. They could have made plans, took control of the situation as it unfolded and 'led' for want of a better word. But, well, I'm sure Gough still got his fee.

Harry never finished the Peter Sellers funeral story. Spike wrote about in one of his war diaries . Peter hated 'In the Mood' by Glen Miller and he would sent copies of it for xmas to people he disliked. He also bought all the copies that a record shop had on the shelves, paid for them and broke them on the on the counter and asked the assistant to throw them in the bin. At his funeral it was reported the Spike and Harry were crying when they played it .Milligan said later they were actually crying with laughter. I recommend Spikes war diaries for any fans of his humour .

I remember as a young apprentice after I had moved from Coffs Harbour to Sydney as there were no apprenticeships in Coffs in the 1950s, the Goon Show became an anchor for a lonely country lad. If I met up with my brother and his fellow university mates we would speak in "Goon". I well remember one Coffs lad had his arm in plaster so i said "Have an accident?" to which his immediate reply was "No thanks, I've just had one" and so we would behave like a bunch of idiots whenever together. I once paid for a taxi to get me home in time for the "Goon Show" and believe me, an apprentice's wage was very small back in the 1950s. I think we were all delightfully made because of this wonderful show. I still occasionally from a CD several of the Goon Shows I have, and my own children never laugh. Is there something wrong with them?

I've read all of Spike's books about his military service, and they are funny as hell. The story about Harry and Spike meeting is actually in one of the books that Spike wrote about his military service, I just don't remember which.

Ohh what a show Magnificent. Gough allowed my wife to become a citizen only 2 years after she came here. He was at the ceremony at Liverpool and made it his business to introduce himself to both of us/ A true blue Aussie

I would recommend you look up Harry's version of Nessun Dorma, he sang it in the film Davy.
That was so funny, today's comedians are a bit like a dose of the metric miles.
I wish we had more people like Harry and Spike today.

Whitlam looked slightly terrified when Milligna came on. Maybe he was expecting the ghost of Peter Sellers to show up as well.

It's so much fun watching Harry laughing when Spike first walks on. You can see him thinking "Oh, God, what's he going to do now?" shortly followed by "No idea, but it'll be disturbingly funny in ways that only this wonderful lunatic is able to create".
