    I live out of my car in the Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee. Best part about the lifestyle is that even if your vehicle does break down, your always in your driveway.

    I don’t know how I got here but subscribed after watching the van break down and the humanity strangers showed to fix it for them, fair play for being so brave and doing what you are doing, wish you nothing but good luck

    Stumbled over your van at FLORB's channel and already commented over there how charming I find it. Farmhouse look meets gypsy vardo. Love the water heater and the spice rack. Drift wood, up-cycled pallet wood. If I had a van (up to now I live my dream through people like you) I'd need a shower/bathroom, but I believe the style would be very similar to yours. I'm sure you're having a whale of a time in this cute van. Good on you! I'll subscribe and follow you along for a bit. 👍🏼😉

      It’s very true what you say, the one thing our generation is lacking is a strong counter cultural movement. We haven’t had one our entire lives so far, the traveller movement was well and truly stamped out (literally) in the late 1980’s by the UK government, and the same thing is happening again with this stricter van conversion legislation in the hope of discouraging this movement. Young people need hope, they need an identity and they need a cause, but all of these has been squeezed out of us by not only the people in power but also the internet too. I fear the ethos of freedom and love of the 60’s will never resurface in this society we’ve created, but we are making small steps in the right direction and breaking away from the norm

    Do you worry about weight at all? Most motorhomers that I know are obsessed with how much their van weighs and what payload they’ve got.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! That’s very kind of you ☺️ We had a lot of room to play with to start as our van was originally a 17 seater minibus so with seats removed and no passengers the weight was very low. We weighed it last year fully converted and it only came to 2.6T so no issues there as our payload is 3.85T ☺️

    I re watched this video and I must admit the security feature in the back is a great idea. Unfortunately this type of safes are not as safe as one might think. They open in about 2 seconds if you know how (No tools required)
    To make it a lot safer I would change out the very sloppy spring which is wrapped around the main locking pin. That would mean the safe is hardly useable with it's key pad (since the electro magnet is no longer able to work against the stronger spring) but you can always use the key.
    Also these safes become much more safe if it has been enclosed completely so there is no access to the top and sides (this factors in into the 2 seconds of opening flaw the safe has)
    On a more daily use note: Where are the facilities please? A dry toilet build into the coffee sack ottoman maybe?

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tips! The safe is in fact bolted to the floor and the keypad has never worked so it only opens with a key, however we didn’t know about the sides being vulnerable so will have to do something about that!
      As for the facilities, it’s usually just a shovel in the woods (more ecological), but we do have a small portable toilet as a back up that lives behind our curtain 💩

    • @koningbolo4700
      @koningbolo4700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FromRustToRoadtrip The sides aren't vulnerable as such 9unless your garden variety thug is lugging a oxi-acetilene set with him/her... The safe is vulnerable in a simple way. The cause is the very loose spring wrapped around the pin which is actuated by the solinoid. Even if the solinoid is not working it can still pose a vulnerability. It is recommended to upgrade the spring to one which does not allow the pin (held only in place by the very loose spring) being bashed downward (for instance by hitting the top of the safe very hard (which knocks the pin out of the way leaving the safe unlocked for a split second. A well timed bang on top and even better timed pull on the door results ussually in the safe being opened...
      The key mechanism can not prevent that since it actuates the same loosely sprung pin. Again, upgrade the spring and you will be fine or even better set the safe in some sort of enclosure (in combination with setting it on it's side to save space)

    Thats amazing! I want to be you! (Or your other half, im male) just sorting my transit swb camper to live in so your going to be overwhelmed with questions from me im affraid 😀. First Question - if i were to run my leisure battery with only a TV and phone charge how long untill it should be charged? Same batteries as yours but ive no solar panels. Keep it coming guys, i so envy u both.

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much, and no worries at all! The answer will depend on a few different factors- how many Ahs is your battery and how many Watts does your TV use? Your phone will use virtually nothing to charge but your TV, unless it’s 12v, will use significantly more. When you know the Wattage and Voltage of your TV (which it should say on the power cord) you need to do Watts divided by Volts to figure out the Amps and from this you can work out how many hours you can run your TV on from your battery. Bear in mind you’ll want to keep your battery level above 12V at all times to avoid damaging it. Hope I’ve explained this well!

    “Why you left the U.K.” I can give you many reasons why I left 20 years ago, having moved every 2 years for those last 20 years, home is a concept not a place, today it’s sometimes in our apartment in Northern Italy, sometimes in our T4 which we got 2 years ago, campings getting harder in my 60’s, last backpacking was Northern India in 2014, 2020 will be about 50/50 home/van but who knows, we never have a plan just a direction.
    Someone asked about Brexit, shit what a mess, we think we will be OK, if not we will head back to Southeast Asia where I spent 16 years before retiring to Italy.
    One thing I should mention is, if you travel too long it’s impossible to stop, I can’t... have traveled most of my life and get restless if I stay too long , I’m happiest in my (our) van going somewhere with the T4 Tdi 5cyl growling at me, it’s well named California

      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your story is very inspiring we hope to be able to live like this on a permanent basis too sooner rather than later. Well we built the inside of the van, although my dad did design the entire electrical, heating and plumbing system which we helped put together. He’s also been teaching us about mechanics so every time something goes wrong he instructs us how to change the part etc and it’s a great way to learn on the go, we’re really grateful to have his help ☺️

    Beautiful van.
    Beautiful couple.

    One thing I always wonder about living in a van: How do you wash your clothes?
    Do you do it by hand?

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! ☺️ And yes I wash everything by hand and we usually end up drying it on the dashboard while we drive if we don’t hang it outside on a nice day. We do take a trip to the laundrette every two months to do all of our bedding and bulky items though

    Awesome video! The van looks amazing! I was just wondering how you guys actually make a living? Do you just live off of the blogs, videos and pictures you make on your travels? Or do you go back every so often for work? I am genuinely thinking about maybe doing something like this with a van in the near future. But my profession, (nursing) doesn't lend itself well for working on the road :(

    • @FromRustToRoadtrip
      @FromRustToRoadtrip  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching!
      To answer your question; at the moment we travel for 6-7 months then return to the UK for work for 6 months at a time but we're working to change this and hoping one day to not have to keep returning. We're working hard on building our TH-cam channel but it's slow progress and doesn't even cover the time taken to shoot and edit the videos yet but hopefully over time this will change. We're also converting a classic van in the UK that we plan to hire out year-round for families / festivals etc.
      Most of our efforts are working towards making a living out of what we love doing most which is photo documentaries but unfortunately photography isn't the easiest industry to make money in! We're gonna keep at it though and hopefully soon we'll be able to realise our dream of being able to travel full time. Good luck to you and hope you can find a way to follow your dreams :)

      That video is quite a bit longer down the queue after the previous Bedford video, but as it explains in that video, we’ve put the project on hold for a while. More details in the video.

      Thanks for watching, and that sounds very exciting, good on you! I was actually kind of thrown in at the deep end with driving the van as when we got it I was the only one of us two who had a license, so I had to drive this huge van down the motorway from London to Cornwall and I had never driven on a motorway either! People say I look too small to be driving it but I’ve never had any issues (apart from hitting a tree with the roof once 😅)

    Very impressive van conversion. I love the way you've used a lot of wood and driftwood. I love the porthole especially. I hope the artwork which glows in the dark isn't radioactive..! One question though - it doesn't look like you have an on-board loo?
