- Ian Haworth is the head of the Cult Information Centre in the UK. Haworth escaped from the Toronto cult People Searching Inside, Inc., in 1978. The Cult Information Centre is a charity providing advice for victims of cults, their families, and the media.
Haworth assessed scenes in movies and TV shows inspired by true stories, such as "Waco," based on the Branch Davidians; the Manson family in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"; and "The Sacrament," which is about the events of the Jonestown massacre.
Haworth also myth-busted some misconceptions about life inside a cult, looking at the movies "Ticket to Heaven," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," and "The Master."

It’s the fact tht the officers had ignored the ‘no harassment’ part tht proves tht given authority reinforces the lucifer effect on normal ppl- including the young healthy men tht participated. It wasn’t all for ‘science’ as even after the experiment- the briefing- it was evident tht there was a dynamic power shift in the room in which the prisoners felt submissive an lack power even in face of there no longer being in the condition of the prison. It’s hard to believe normal ppl can turn almost sadistic which challenged morals an ethics. One of the best depictions of a cult is in Toy Story 3. Lotso the bear has many characteristics of a cult leader. He has a big personality and targets the lost and vulnerable (i.e. Andy’s toys). He uses the technique of Love Bombing, where new recruits will be showered with seemingly unconditional acceptance and affection, giving them what they crave the most in that moment.
Like most other cult leaders, he convinces his members that the world is a cold and lonely place, so that they separate themselves from outside influences and put their trust in him instead. The cult of Sunnyside Daycare is presented as a utopia for those seeking refuge from the outside world that causes their pain and misery.
The true nature of the cult doesn’t begin to reveal itself until it’s too late. It’s only after Andy’s toys are stuck when they start to see that Lotso is an authoritarian and that his true motivation is dominance. Any resistance is a threat to his power, and Lotso punishes and exiles anyone who does this as a way to ensure conformity and obedience within his cult.
He also recriuted them when they were at a vilnerable point in their lifes (after being given away), which is a quality of many cult leaders
I think it’s more of a dictatorship state rather than a cult. They don’t like Lotso, they live in fear of him.

Nazi Germany and Stalinist soviet Russia are great examples of this, where citizens followed the leader to an extent that would put them in harms way or put others in harms way for the leader. This is why we have the term “cult of personality” and use it so often when describing the devotion that the average citizen had to Hitler or Stalin or any other totalitarian government such as theirs.

I feel that's something people miss about midsommar, and for a reason. The cult in midsommar does not only persuades Dani but the audience as well. It's very subtle but the core horror element of that movie as well.

Yeah, I saw some explanation videos that showed that many people left the movie smiling because of the satisfaction from watching the smuck boyfriend and his jerk friends get theirs, but I was just sitting there utterly disturbed. That girl is now stuck living with a cult that broke her mind and finds it normal to bake pubic hair pies and chuck old people off cliffs. How in the world is that a nice ending? And as for the revenge part I didn't think the boyfriend or his friends deserved horrific deaths like that. Yeah they were jerks, but a lot of people are and they don't deserve horrific deaths. I like a good revenge plot, but not in this case.
Some of the scariest horror stories are the ones that you don't know are horror stories. Leave people in the unknown, psychological horror is terrifying, much more than any gore ridden scene

I'd like to hear *how* he got out and what real deprogramming is like.
Look up Theodore Roosevelt Patrick, Jr. Alot of times, the family member him and the family were trying to save were already adults; so they had to kidnap them in order to do the deprogramming. He even did some jail time for basically kidnapping & holding them until they made a breakthrough. They made a documentary on it all called Deprogrammed.
There’s different ways people get deprogrammed. Some can be quite coercive and involve kidnapping. Some people are closer to reality to others and can get out if someone manages plants a seed of doubt or manages to shake their faith in the cult leader. A really important part of reprogramming is always going to be getting the person separate from other cult members and helping them use critical thinking skills. Once people are out of a cult, it can be really difficult not to get pulled back in. The real world is never going to be as affectionate, structured, or affirming as a cult. And people learn to crave constant affirmation and structure while they are members. One of my best friends has struggled a lot with a cult. Living on his own and making his own choices is extremely hard for him.

Not that he needed to go through being in a cult, but he did gain the knowledge on how they work from the inside, why they are not good and how to get out. That's very useful and it helps to prevent cults from gaining future members.

Anyone is vulnerable to becoming a cult member, coincidentally just last night I was thinking about joining one whilst in a bad mood (not a specific one, just one that would isolate me from society), but then I remembered that they take away your freedom, which is something that I value.
Similar to him i was invited to a “talk” that i was told by a friend was about communication that he said would be good for my sales work. It turned out to be a cult. First your in a room with a heap of people including the friend while people talk about how the organisation helped them so much blah blah blah. Then they separate you from your friend and put you in a room with a speaker in the front and then 3 people behind you watching taking notes. You’re instructed to do an activity where you take your trauma and then break down your personality. Then they ask you to sign up for more workshops, all of a sudden those people behind you come up close and try and pressure you to sign up for $700 per session corses. I freaked out, told them i was going to the toilet then bolted out of there, and several people chased me. I didn’t go to work for a week or 2 afraid to leave the house. Saw my doctor and he referred me to a psychologist to speak to who reassured me and then i was able to return to work. It was only a couple of hours one night with this cult and it fucked me up so i can imagine how it would be to stay there longer.
Oh, I know them. That was fun (not at all). One, luckily my friend is not involved with them anymore, only ever did one course. But her coworker got her involved and I happened to be friend. The dude who was leading us in our activity dismissed me in a way that, luckily shut me down to them. He also talked about how this group made him so much better that his ex-wife proposed to him. I was able to shut them down hard based on cost alone, insisting that I had to pay for school. I think I managed to be just stubborn enough that they didn't think they would succeed. Left that night thinking they were shit and pissed. I'm so sorry that the experience left you so scared and i'm glad to know that you're doing better.

by “people you are attracted to” that doesn’t necessarily mean pretty or sexy. For example “Men’s rights” cults will be attracted to men with explosive and violent emotions, while cults looking for young women to abuse will be attracted to quiet and shy girls.
All cults will generally look for someone who is lonely, since they want to avoid bonds that are stronger than the bond between the individual and the leader - like he mentioned in the video.

@@whitenoise3447 - I have a severe phobia of whasps and to a lesser extent bees from having been locked in a room full of wasps for a whole night when I was 12. Tried to keep myself covered with my "blanket", but it was only a quilt full of big openings, so I got stung A LOT. I can tell you that that bee scene triggers the hell out of me (in the actual sense of the word, not in the "makes me feel uncomfortable" sense people use it nowadays). I've never seen the movie it's from because of it, but everytime that clip gets played in some video, I skip it at the speed of light. People have different ways of reacting to certain things though, so I'm in no way claiming that no one would react as you describe.

Was in a cult for 14 years myself. They take away your identity and replace it with their blueprint idea of a person. Everyone had to listen to same music, eat the same food, watch the same movies, stuff their outside friends, stuff their family members who are not in the cult and so much more.
I can still vividly remember the day I had a mental breakdown because I didn't know who I was anymore. That was the day I decided to plan to leave the cult. It took me 2 years of planning in advance due to what they do to people who decide to leave. But I managed to escape.
Now, I feel no longer handcuffed and I am re-exploring who I am, what I like. It's strange but it feels good

@@never-more9163 to imagine that I joined at a time where they went "easy" on people like that. I know ex members of that cult who had it so much worse. Like, in some cases where the teenage child would be considered rebllious, the parents were ordered to send their child away to HQ (headquarters, kinda like Jonestown) in Australia so that the child would learn some discipline.
Just like the interviewee in this video said it. The leader's fear is a strong family bond he couldn't control.
One of the cult's teachings were to remind everyone that Jesus always comes first! Even if it means leaving your spouse, wife or children behind. Literally!!! And they would test you
Here are some examples of the more darker things that happened:
Some boys were sexually abused (with one victim for over 20 years), wifes were beaten, people's most private characteristics/attributes you may have shared with someone would be used against you and exposed to the entire cult should you do something wrong

When I lived in Korea a cult tried to recruit me. The stress one particular lady caused me was one of the main reasons I decided to leave only after 3 years. The last year was hellish. She just wouldn't leave me alone, the biggest issue was that I lived next to one of the members, and she often came to visit her. They liked hanging out by the door so they knew when I was coming or leaving. I couldn't move because the school I worked for provided housing. One day, when I first met them and didn't realize it was a cult, they invited me to their church. I made it very clear that I wasn't interested in joining, but accepted to go because I had friends from other religions who also invited me to their church and didn't see anything wrong with it. Anyway, they took me to their church and after showing me a video about their beliefs, etc they wanted to show me where they get baptized. That just put me on alert and I refused. I was thinking, "Oh hell no, are they going to try to baptize me?" Since I refused they literally dragged me there. There were 5 or 6 women and they were blocking the exit. I guess they saw that I was getting scared and angry so they moved out of the way and let me go. It was really scary to be surrounded like that, I also wasn't 100% sure where I was in the area so if I ran out of the church I would have gotten terribly lost. Anyway, they took me home and one girl asked me to be friends with her. She was young and a new member, she looked very hurt when I said I didn't want to be her friend, and said "But I'm a good person, I just want to save you." That terrified me and also made me really sad for her. To me, she was the one that needed saving. The look on the main lady that tried to recruit me was scary. It was like her facade had disappeared as soon as she realized I wasn't going to join. While my story isn't as terrifying as the ones we hear about on the news, the stressed that it caused me did affect me a lot and eventually it developed into depression. I felt trapped being in my own home, and every time I left or came back home I felt afraid she would be there.

omar chihab I think they mean near death experiences, or generally when people die but are resuscitated, revived. My father used to be an ER doctor, and a little boy came in who had been drowned. He was underwater in cold water in the winter for several minutes and had no pulse. It freaked him out because he’d tried reviving a boy a few years earlier who’d been under water in the summer for less then a minute, but that boy had died.
This time, though, the boy was successfully revived, no brain damage. The cold water had helped him survive by pooling the blood away from extremities, to keep the core body temp warm for longer. But it also kept his brain oxygenated for longer. What seemed like a more dangerous situation is the very thing that allowed him to survive.
I don’t think it would be a good idea to have people relive trauma.... recounting how dying by blood loss or choking or drowning or suffocation etc. Apparently many people who try to commit suicide freak out after they commit to it because they think, “Okay, this was a mistake.” I don’t think it’s a great idea to ask someone, “So, did this scene capture death by wrist slitting correctly?”
So it’s a garbage idea, I think, not at all sensitive. But I believe the person you replied to was referencing being revived.

I married into a cult at 22. I was groomed by a security guard in Job Corps. He was the cult leader. I was newly out on my own and vulnerable to suggestion. I felt like I had nobody else because it was kind of true. I left four years later when I had to go to the psych ward to recover. Due to malnutrition I had six rotten teeth and was 62 pounds. Thankfully I hid money away and moved to a different state. The following six years were horrible due to the nightmares and my constant questioning of reality. I'm doing completely better now and am an atheist. But I still have nightmares of being stolen from my home back to that cult. I wake up crying. Someday I will not have these dreams. I have a beautiful set of dental prosthetics now and I use a wheelchair due to the neurological damage done. But I love my life

@@blackmetalcumbia you're good 🙂 cult was a family church run by a former pastor who's church kicked him out. He was very strict and believed really nasty stuff that to me just was what was in the Bible. I have always had eating disorders and I'm autistic so I tend to like to follow people right off a cliff. So my weight dropped too low cuz I was very stressed. I had been isolated from friends and family cuz I wasn't able to have internet then. I'm not sure how they're doing now. On Google Earth, their compound in Oklahoma is still there and appears to be more dilapidated than I remember. When I left I was able to find some help and get internet and smartphone. I even went back to school and got a degree. Though I can't use it anymore (I'm disabled now), it was a good distraction to study again. I escaped by just using one of their cars and driving back to my apartment in the next county (I still had my own place and job) and called my estranged mother and bought her a plane ticket using my work's computer. My boss and neighbor helped me move and my mother helped me get a U-Haul and we drove to the West Coast. My mother was awful the whole way but I had to get out. I grew up in a cult as a child, so the part where he spoke about the break down of family bonds really hit me hard. My family was very close, but our closeness was always contextualized in the group, and used against us often. Because we were loyal to our family, if just one of us still believed, the rest of us were under control- we weren't going to leave anyone behind. It's hard enough to leave a cult as an adult, and an individual. As a child, though, my doubts meant nothing. As long as the leaders had my parents convinced, they had me too.
One other "interesting" thing about being a child in a cult that I remembered is how competitive it was. Maybe that was just in my unique situation, but I remember very clearly that all us kids were subtly pitted against each other. We were expected to perform loyalty and spiritual experiences, and our performances were compared. If you ranked the kids by how well they towed the line, my sister came in first, all the other kids somewhere between, and me in dead last. I can't tell you how many times she and I were held up against each other. She was perfect, I was the problem child. So any time something went wrong- something broke, someone got hurt while playing, etc- it was my fault, no question.
We left when I was eleven, when my parent's doubts finally both lined up and became to much to justify. It took a long time after that for them to get more perspective on how I was treated in particular. It's been almost 20 years and we're still all dealing with the aftermath. I can't help but be galled by how much of an impact the first third of my life had on the latter two. I am happy to report my family is still close, and we've verbally forgiven they ways we hurt each other during that time, particularly my sister and I. I doubt I'll ever not have trust issues or stop being disgusted whenever people talk about loyalty, though.

I was born into a cult.
I was not allowed to befriend 'outsiders'(unless my goal was to preach to them), discouraged from pursuing further education so that I could devote my whole life to spreading the holy message instead. My parents refused to consent to the possibility of me having a blood transfusion prior to my operation in case of an emergency. I was also made to believe that if I didn't preach an x amount of hours a week, then when armageddon came, the blood of those people (that I could have otherwise saved) would be on my hands.
I wouldn't celebrate Christmas, Easter, birthdays etc. I wouldn't participate in sexual education lessons, religious studies, science lessons(where evolution was the topic discussed). I'd sit out Harry Potter/Narnia movie days at school (since anything to do with magic and fantasy was evil and devil worship). All of which made me stand out like a sore thumb; and when some classmates began bullying me for it, I was praised by my family and other members who claimed I was doing everything right and the 'oppression' and hate were just signs of the last days.
And now that I left, I am labelled as an apostate. As a result I am completely shunned by all Jehovah's Witnesses(otherwise they'd risk themselves being disfellowshipped too). And so the majority of my family have treated me as if I didnt exist for the past 5 years. This is supposedly done out of love, a form of punishment to guide lil' ol' me back to the sheep-flock someday.

The children part broke me. I was in a cult from age 9 to 12, and was homeschooled and loved and safe along with my 3 younger siblings until we entered the group. There my parents were forced to go against everything they lived by, and send us all to the cult's school and kindergarten. That sudden, traumatic separation from my mom, is one of the things that I still carry with me to this day, around 10 years later. Some kids were separated from their moms even after school, for weeks at a time.
The way he explains the "need" the leaders have in separating the cult members from their kids, was very painful to hear, and brought me to tears, but was also clear and made understand things I needed to understand earlier, so thank you.

@@strawberrycow6614 It is actually a smart question. Bees go for the kill. They can kill you by stinging your mouth and cause your pipes to close. They also go for nose and can go in it. It is painful and can cause breathing problems.
As for the eyes, they can sting eyeballs. (I know this beekeeper that got it bad). Moving away with 100% closed eyes might not be the best idea. You can injure yourself by falling etc. Closing your eyes as much as you can is actually the way to go here.
The best advice I got was, move as you would move with a snake near you. No sudden moves, no waving. Just move away slowly. If that is not possible, run trough bushes as they will not follow you in it.
Same goes for approaching yellow jackets, hornets and other pests. That is if you HAVE TO approach them.
One other thing is that if you have to approach any of the stinging insects, do not wear ANY perfume or deodorant or be stinking. They would attack you instantly for that alone.

I was in a cult for 8 years, and watching Midsommar was one of the most unsettling experiences of my life. It was, in my opinion, so accurate and believable, and that movie does a great job of not only depicting the personal disturbance that often leads people to cults, but also both creates in the characters and in the viewer a sense of disorientation as to what it is that is actually going on until it is basically too late.
I think it's also a strong statement about how modern society fails to fulfill people culturally and spiritually, and that leaves them vulnerable to being targeted by not only cults but subcultures that are rooted in tribalism and fear/violence towards the "other."

As I former cult member myself (4 years), I would say that there is A LOT lacking in many movies featuring cults. I would like to see a movie that that really captures the extent of indoctrination and makes it as visceral as it really is. They make you feel special, loved and Whole and you would be willing to do anything for Them. They become your life and you are just a part of Them; your _self_ has no value other than in that context.
Well, a movie is 2 hours long. Hard to pack the slow process of slipping into it and especially the even harder process of getting out without focussing on the few crucial moments. (Same with love stories: love on first sight, kiss, sex, there you go: they love each other!) Truly good movies are hard to make and even harder to sell.
Joseph Fuller also, I noticed how they never really discuss the rejectors. Like, if you show the slightest bit of interest, but still say no, they will harass and stalk you with “kindness” until you join. It’s terrifying.

Someone I follow on TH-cam, called Caitlyn Doughty (or better known as ‘ask a mortician’) has a podcast where they talked about this. (If you’re interested: it’s called ‘Death in the afternoon’). It was rather interesting to know that people first thought an amount of 300/400 people had died and the rest had fled, since they could only see them from the sky. Later it became known that these bodies had been stacked, up to multiple layers of corpses all on top of each other. Remember that no one from the outside had been there (as far as we know), so that means that someone from inside the cult had done this. In a weird way this is fascinating to me, because the biggest probability is that Jones himself did this with his highest ranked followers. That someone would do this after he actually murdered so much people. It is very weird to me.

Armistead Maupin's "Further Tales of the City" book had Jim Jones surviving Jonestown and living in a maintenance shed in a park in San Francisco. Then he gets romantically involved with a rich older woman. I don't remember much of the particulars of the story after that, but at the time it didn't seem as absurd as this description probably makes it. After reading a summary of the novel I'm pleased to learn that the fictional Jones does not escape alive again.
This whole video made me realize that “The Farm” in Riverdale did portray (mostly) everything correctly, not comparing anyone’s personal experiences to a show but like the love bombing, the way they recruit people, the leader persona.

This is so heartbreaking but so important. My boyfriend is an x jehovas and it always breaks my heart to acknowledge stuff that he went trough as a child. Thank you sir so much for using your own traumatic experience to help us to understand how terrible cults can be.
My boyfriend's mum and brother joined a few years ago - totally changed everything about themselves. Now they pressure my boyfriend to join and its making him beyond miserable. I hold my tongue as to not upset them but one of these days I'm going to burst. I went to his brother's baptism which was during a conference of theirs. And the propoganda videos were shocking, I was so offended by some of them that I faked a headache and left the hall.

My aunt was in a cult for a while when she was younger. Because my mother was a model at the time, they had convinced my aunt that modelling and having her picture taken had allowed her to be possessed by the devil. Their relationship was broken for a while, until she finally got out.
The FLDS does the "Safe Houses" thing. Yeah, exactly like he described it, the people are shut away from their family in another member's home to "reprogram" them. Usually if someone expresses doubt in the leadership or wants to leave.

When I first saw this video pop-up in my feed I was critical, but having seen the clip, I must say it was very very good. I give the clip a good 8/10
When i went to NYC, me and my sister went to the scientology church out of pure curiosity. We'd heard about different celebrities attending and being apart of this religion. Almost immediately we were bombarded with hot chocolate and cookies and were asked to sit and watch a 10 minute video about dianetics. They then locked us in a small room where we watched the full video and we weren't allowed to leave until the video ended. We walked out of that place with $40 book and dvd and a 3 month free scientology church membership. It's scary because i look back and think how was i so stupid to sign up to something like that so quickly and without much thought? But they really do get you - with the warm welcome and sickly kindness and giving you a sense of belonging. They still send us mail asking us to donate and to rejoin (we live in the UK!). It's a funny story now but it hits home how easy it is to get wrapped up in something before you're fully aware of what's going on.

I was brought up a Jehovah’s witness, I’ve now walked free and I’ve never felt more free and in control of my own mind. There were many times i tried to leave, but i never really had that choice whilst living at home. When i finally became older & financially independent i left home at age 22. I had already left the religion a year before leaving home and my parents constantly had tried to intensely pressure me into rejoining. Its one of the biggest cults with around 9 million members . They have literature that talks about how they aren’t a cult, but they have all the characteristics sooo... if it looks like a duck and talks & walks like a duck then isn’t it a cult ? 😉🤣

Sleepy Chick “It’s not that big of a deal.” I think it’s important here to empathize. Do you know how much hold a high control group such as Jehovah’s Witnesses have on their people? They begin to control all aspects of your life: social, entertainment, lifestyle, even how you dress. People have died because of this group’s skewed beliefs. People have committed suicide because this group tore apart their families. No, I think it is a big deal to have your whole life dictated for you by old men, unable to leave without consequence.

Sleepy Chick So did I. If you think it’s such an exaggeration, ask all the ex-witnesses that have been completely shunned by their families. Ask all the ex-witnesses who have had close friends and family die because they didn’t want a blood transfusion. As a former witness I think you understand that individuality is discouraged in the religion. But if you sincerely disagree with my statement that is fine and I respect that. :)

At first I watched Midsommar with a critical eye, so I thought "omg that's so fucked up". When you watch it being in Dani's shoes, you begin to understand how they manipulated her, she was suffering and had no one, the cult swept in and took her, making her and the audience forget about murder, abuse, pedophilia and Lord knows what else happens. I wasn't in a cult but I was part of a fundamentalist christian church and one of the things we learned in bible study was to approach people when they are vulnerable because that will make them turn to God easier. This is extremely messes up

my parents almost got pulled into a cult like last year, we just joke about it but reality is it could’ve been really scary :/ they were just looking for a new church and only went to one session?? idk i forget what church things are called lol but by the end of it they were rlly freaked out cuz although they were soso nice something just seemed really off :/ lucky nothing happened to them :)

@Wendel Bolide cults try to cut you off from everyone you know and love and practically mind control you. They either force you to stay or threaten you when complete isolation. Any decent church will respect your decision to leave and never tries to take your autonomy.

3:42 When I started having doubts as a baptized Jehovah's Witness. My response to the logic coming into the forefront of my brain was suicide. I didn't know what to do. and the love bombing that occurred during my breakdown in the bathroom tore me in two.
On one hand I felt that was the place that I belonged. on the other hand, I felt guilty about my feelings and wanted to die, if it didn't mean hurting them. I felt like I had no life outside of the Organization. That I should listen to what the Governing Body and Faithful Discreet Slave told me. and endure it. I had already cut myself off from unbelieving family. and I didn't have many friends that were "worldly" for a short time I accepted the information they thought I needed to reaffirm my faith. But somehow I found my senses and walked away.0
It was a long mental process. but I walked away. I hurt my mother in the process. and other people I considered "Family". I still deal with the paranoia of not being able to live my life out of fear of being officially Disfellowshipped (because I still live around members of the congregation. I still dont feel comfortable getting a job in my neighborhood out of fear that its a place frequented by any of them). But it gets easier every day. If you're reading this, and are going through something similar, you'll be okay. and you can leave too.

This hits hard. As someone who wants to walk away but can’t without facing severe consequences and backlash, it gets difficult the more time passes. I’m not baptized yet and don’t plan on doing so because I don’t believe this at all, but with each passing month, everyone gets more aggressive when telling me “you should get baptized when you’re ready” as if I’m being rushed. I’m 14 by the way. My mom is a witness and my dad is not, and I don’t want to make their arguments more aggressive because of me leaving, especially because I have a much younger sibling.

Its exhausting. But this is your life. And you can make and maintain your own happiness. It gets better, I promise.

Art Lovaa this is exactly how it feels in my religious family :( my parents always say that i’m letting satan control my life for having doubts and i’m going to hell, and that it’s sinful and forbidden to believe that you’re a decent person or even a good person! all of these beliefs are so so deep in my mind even though i logically disagree wirh them and i just don’t see a way out so often ;;

I see alot of comments about religion here. And i just wanted to put my perspective on things. I dont believe that religion is bad. Anyone’s religion. But their are some groups of people that force their religion on others who would rather stay out of it. As a kid i was forced to go to church and be arround a pastor that would say things that concerned me. Such as “a womans body is made for one sole purpose” and when he talked about abortions durring sermon one if my friends raised her hand and asked why she couldent chose what to do with her own body. He told her she diddnt have the right. When i left the church they sent me letter after letter about future survices and counseling. I also had people from my family and church come up to me and tell me what “god” thought about me. Keep in mind i was only about 13 when this started. I was deemed a “bad” kid for not believing anymore. I have never went to a party, i dont sleep arround, and i dont do drugs. But i am still the bad kid of the family even though my cousin asked me to buy her drugs and alcohol. I did not and her parents think im a bad child. Things like this is what turns anyones religion into a cult.
I’m so sorry you had that experience, that’s awful. I’m a Christian, and I fully believe that everyone should have the right to openly question their beliefs, in fact, that’s even encouraged in the bible. If you question your beliefs, you’re either going to find a flaw and try to find the truth, no matter what it is, or come back stronger in your beliefs. I find spending time alone and really asking myself the tough questions helps a lot. Best of luck, I’ll be praying for you!
Shema Echad why not? I am a Christian. I have had doubts in the past, and will most likely have doubts in the future. That’s ok. It’s okay to wrestle with deep questions. If you are truly honest with yourself in your quest for the truth, you will find it.

I take it by your comments that you are Jewish? I believe that Jesus came to die as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all humans, and to fulfill the previous Covenant that God had with His people. You may believe that you are waiting for the messiah to come, but He already has, as Jesus, sent by God.
Following Christ does not make me a polytheist, or a worshipper of satan. You and I worship the same God. The same God who watched over and blessed Abraham, who detests sin, and loves His creation. He sent Jesus, to complete his Covenant with the Jews, and allow all those who would accept Jesus as the son of God into Heaven if they simply believe in Him.

Im sorry to hear about that. I know a lot of people who had the same experiences as you. I believe some people hide behind their religion and their position as religious leaders to be able to do whatever they want. But a real disciple of Christ knows that the most important is to love others. And people are sometimes so engrossed in their idea of what is right that they forget how to love.
I knew what cults were, but I didn’t know they actually occur in normal day life. I thought there were only a few in the world and in a lot of movies 🤦🏽♀️
No there's a lot, they're usually disguised as a normal religious sect. From the outside they might look like Christians, Buddhists, or Hindus but they're not

I grew up in a cult like manner. One of my teachers said brainwashing doesn’t exist and it’s hard for a lot of ppl to understand it. And you never will understand it until it happens to you. It’s made me extremely intuitive now tho since I understand it a lot better. Also keep in mind I was raised into it from a very young age. But at any age this can happen and I notice it in people very easily. They may not know it. That’s what brainwashing is. And Stockholm syndrome. But it’s a blessing and a curse. That’s one of many things that came out of life of this. The person is still in my life and I get confused and love bombed every now and again but I’m so so much stronger now. I’ve come a very long way. It’s crazy how someone can literally control every single aspect of your life and your self. I relate to so much in this video. It’s crazy. (Also it was not a cult. My father is just a messed up controlling narcissistic man who programmed me and my brothers to go against our mom. That meant we had no life except one of abuse and to only do what our father wanted even if he wasn’t around and going against eachother to show our loyalty to my father. I can go on and on but I’ll stop here. People called us robots and soldiers. He ruined us but I’ve come a long way. You don’t have to be in a set cult to go through this)

And in the same way you said you relate to this video, I relate to your relation to this video. I grew up with an abusive mother who manipulated the whole family into scapegoating me for every issue they had, as well as sending me to mental hospitals because i was diagnosed with every disorder in the DSM-5 according to her since age 14. Only after starting college was I able to stop taking medications and start seeking therapies to literally reteach me that I haven’t been mentally ill and that their teachings about me were wrong. I’m still going through my journey of recovery while still remaining in contact with my family. It’s heartbreaking to hear how many horrible people have used the same manipulative techniques used on me to control other peoples lives.

When he talked about Jim Jones wearing the sunglasses it immediately reminded me of the Korean drama “Save Me”. The disciples in the cult refuse to let an undercover spy see the leader because his “heavenly aura would blind those with impure souls”. Such a good but emotionally taxing show
