The De-contamination before seeing E.T. makes a lot of sense. E.T. is sick and the doctors don't want to give him anything more than he already has, or he'll die. The protection is as much for him as it is for the humans-so they'd de-contaminate going both ways
*CDC expert:* Talks about the inaccuracy of all medical staff not wearing proper protection. *Actual medical staff in 2020:* Do not have access to proper protective items. 😞

@@i3rucei3ruce well, he may have a xenophobe tendency , so he doesn't care about ET health , but i guess you think its good not to contaminate ET with earth virus (WAY TOO LATE , i would say. )
It is probably too late, but you might aswell decontaminate beforehand anyways just in the slight chance that the ET didnt already catch anything, atleast not anything fatal, so you make sure you dont introduce something new that would be fatal or which could together with something he already has be fatal. Having 2 diseases is worse than 1 afterall.
I mean, it's depressing in how bad the reality of managing an outbreak under a anti science political agenda is. You can't repeatedly cut the funding of your pandemic response, and then desperately try and downplay a pandemic because you're afraid of not getting reelected if, like, pandemic things happen and expect the CDC to be able to do its job. All the things he's talking about, he simply failed to take into account that the CDC can only be as effective as they are allowed by the state.
"Contagion" was one of the best movies i've ever seen. It wasn't your Quadruple-A Multibillion Comic-Book-Adaption-Sci-Fi-Full-CGI-we-have-all-A-List-celebs we-could-get" movie. And that's one of it's greatest strenghts imho. It's bleak and close to a what could be scenario.
I wish they'd talked about that some more. Decontamination before entering an area actually would've been necessary with an alien. In addition, I've read that things like Mars rovers have to be scrubbed so thoroughly that not even dead bacteria can remain on them, because otherwise it would be possible to miss it if they picked up something extraterrestrial.
