“Grand Prix” (1966) is often called to be one of- if not the best motor racing movie of all time. Two teammates crashing into each other, one recovering from the accident (Brian Bedford), the other one (James Garner), fired from his team is going to drive for another one, while getting romantically involved with his former mate’s wife (Eva Marie Saint). While this plot seems to be a bit thin, it is fact that it was created just to connect the different races within each other, which were supposed to be the main focus of the movie. And clearly, they are: From the beginning “Grand Prix” sets a special tone with a montage of only machines and drivers, images and noises, edited in a way, which still seems very up-to-date. The highlights of the movie, the races are filmed with such passion and due to the various on-board cameras, you get right into the action, which seems as authentic as possible.
The music for the movie was composed by Maurice Jarre, who everybody will remember from his Academy Award winning scores such as “Lawrence Of Arabia” (1962) and “Doctor Zhivago” (1965). His score for “Grand Prix”, although it is heavily based on two themes, an optimistic main theme and a love theme, it is used cleverly throughout the presentation and put off completely for most of the racing sequences, which probably contributes more to them as a score would have done (similar to the lack of music and the resulting impact for the Chariot Race from Rózsa’s “Ben Hur” (1959)), which results not having a lot of action music for this action loaded movie. Enjoy the race!

And Brian Bedford didn’t even have a license to drive at the time !!! How’s that for acting

I saw this movie at the Capitol Theater in Grand Island Nebraska. In the summer 1967, I was 12 years old. After watching this movie I was hooked on Formula One. I don't ever recall watching a football game from start to finish. Includes the Super Bowls. The Capitol Theater was torn down years ago. F1 and Indy Cars, life can not get better.

The great Saul Bass was the visual consultant on this one and it gets started right after a spectacular overture with one of his brilliant main title sequences. A lavish MGM roadshow from the 60's and Jarre handles all the melodrama with great musical flair, while Frankenheimer directs the formula-one races with astounding precision and authenticity. A terrific time at the movies!

Thanks for this soundtrack! I grew up in a motorsports lifestyle as far back as I can remember. Grand Prix was the earliest of recollections at the drive-in. I was 4 yrs old. Some things never get old.

I read about the movie in production during the summer of 1966 when I was almost 16. Actor, Brian Bedford was portrayed literally in looks as the late, great, Jimmy Clark of Duns, Scotland. Clark was my favorite all time racing driver (and, still is).
When this movie was actually released in the fall of '67, it was fantastic to watch on the big silver screen. The sound effects were awesome!
French composer, Maurice Jarre had in most of his scores, as similar trade Mark of style... never, to me, tiring to listen too.
As for the cast...all did a very good job in playing their parts. As we all know, Jim Garner got "the racing bug" (not as much as Steve McQueen or Paul Newman had) from this movie.
I guess there are only two or three of the main stars left in the cast from "Grand Prix" with, I guess, Eva Marie Saint, as the oldest.

Bello Fred. Asfaltali a tutta velocità!😁👍🏻
