Elizabeth Bridge, along with many other bridges across the country, was blown up at the end of World War II by retreating Wehrmacht engineers. This is the only bridge in Budapest that could not be rebuilt in its original form. Pictures and some salvaged items from the old bridge can be seen on the grass in front of the Transport Museum in City Park.
The current white cable-stayed bridge was built on the same site between 1961 and 1964 because the government could not afford to build new foundations for the bridge. The bridge's main cables are hexagonal in cross-section, being composed of thousands of steel wires of seven different diameters, in part because computers at the time were unable to provide a solution for a circular cable cross-section.
The new design, designed by Pál Sávoly, was a first in Central Europe, but had some shortcomings. Tram and heavy truck traffic was removed from the bridge in 1973 after signs of cracks appeared in the structure.
The special lighting for the Elizabeth Bridge was created by renowned Japanese lighting designer Motoko Ishii, and Japan contributed 120 million forints (€450,000) to the design costs. The Budapest City Council paid HUF 150 million for the project. The year 2009 marked the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and Japan, as well as the 50th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic.

A bridge that enjoys the admiration of all Budapest residents, as well as tourists, is the Elisabeta Bridge (Erzsebet hid). This sparkling white suspended bridge was the first newly designed open bridge after the Second World War (1964). The Erzsebet Bridge is located in the center of Budapest, connecting the Ferenciek tere square and the area of Vaci utca street in sector 5 of the capital, with the area between Gellert Mountain and Buda Citadel, in sector 1 on the Buda side. The bridge, which received its name after Queen Elizabeth, was built between 1898 and 1903, and initially it was an iron bridge with chains, 290 meters long, equipped with two support points, and decorated in secessionist style. The current Erzsebet Hid is very little similar to the former structure across the Danube, being the only bridge in Budapest that has almost nothing in common with the original bridge. Due to the serious damage suffered during the Second World War, the only parts preserved and included in the structure today refer to the foundations, due to the lack of funds that had to be invested in the construction of the new bridge.
There are a variety of sources that state that the former Elisabeta Bridge was one of the architectural engineering wonders of the world at the time it was opened to public traffic, being the largest chain bridge that was not supported on pillars in the riverbed. It is the result of Pal Savoly's project, being highly appreciated at the time of its inauguration for its innovative architectural qualities. It was dedicated to Queen Elisabeta, popularly nicknamed Sissi, one of the most eccentric figures of the Habsburg dynasty.
Having a much more pronounced arch compared to the other bridges, it offers miraculous views over the Castle Hill and Gellért Hill and, of course, over the much more attractive bridges to the north and south. The new Elisabeta Bridge was built in 1964, and was also provided with a tram line, but only until 1973. Currently, the bridge has 3-3 lanes in the middle for road traffic, those on the edges being reserved for buses. On both sides of the bridge there are separate sidewalks for pedestrians, which are also used by cyclists.
