Love this type of video Mark.I miss my squirrels, havnt seen them since early November. Still putting out in shell peanuts and corn kernals that blue jays devour. I don't remember the squirrels being gone this long.

Sounds like you have a good strong acorn and other nuts crop in your area.

Possibly my greatest feeding accomplishment was about 5 or so years ago defeating my squirrels. I had a maple tree that they loved and it had my main feeder in it, which was a metel mesh cage with sunflower. I couldn't set it up any different due to space and that being my only tree.
So, I took two long metel chains, a large Frisbee with a hole drilled through it and some bolts to hold the Frisbee about half way down the chain. After a year or so of battling them I finally got my squirrels contained. Still proud of that one, even though the feeder and tree are gone lol
    Also, Happy Thanksgiving, Mark!

We live in a relatively new subdivision. After 14 years, our trees have finally grown to a height that is attracting more wildlife. The past couple of summers we've seen squirrels. I made a peanut feeder for them and we would get one or two each day. We've never seen more than 2 squirrels at a time. In my mind, we don't have a "squirrel problem". We also have bird feeders and yes, the squirrels do try to get to them, especially the one we put black oil sunflower seeds in. But because there's only 1-2 squirrels that come by each day, I don't worry about the birds not having enough to eat. There are 4 other feeders in our small backyard that the birds can get to.
My question is, aside from squirrels just eating up all your birdseed, is there another reason to keep them from your bird feeders? Do they spread diseases that can kill birds? Fleas?
Like I said, we're not inundated with squirrels so supply has not been a concern. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Not really. Squirrels chewing on things like your deck railing, stealing tomatoes off you vines etc are relatively uncommon but no, the main issue is taking over your feeders so the birds can’t get to the seed is the big issue for most of us.

Thank you for sharing this information with us Mark! Love your double pole set up too. Say, wonder if you could share your thoughts on feeding Blue jays with peanut feeder. Our will not use one????

I give my Blue Jays in-shell peanuts by laying a handful in my fly through feeder. I don’t put out a lot as they will bury a bunch on them. The wire mesh type peanut feeder is for my clinging birds like woodpeckers and titmice.

Have you heard of using a “Slinky” on your birdfeeders poles?

Mark, I have a question - we recently were gifted a smart camera bird feeder thing. How do I mount it to avoid squirrels? It comes with a wide mounting bracket that I think should be mounted onto wood, because mounting the bracket and feeder on a tree or the house would be too easy for squirrel access / cause damage. We don't have a deck. Do you have any advice or ideas? We really want to use it ASAP 🙌 thank you!

I would use a 4X4 post with a raccoon baffle made for that type of post. Them mount the camera above the baffle. Make sure it is at least 8 feet from any jumping place.

Their GD hoarding tendencies are what's most annoying. You can leave a bowl of seed below the feeder, they'll stash that then proceed to attack the feeder. If there was a hill of seed they would spend their whole lives "hiding" it from other wildlife.

We've had great luck using the Cole's Hot Sauce you recommended. Nothing with fur will bother the seeds & peanut chips. We place the food in a zip bag, add a bit of Cole's. Zip it shut & mix then pour into feeders. As a safety measure don gloves when using the Cole's.

Thank you for the testimony. We have many customers who are dedicated to Cole’s.
