Bioinformatics: Academia Vs Industry

  • In this video I compare working in a bioinformatics role in Academia vs in Industry. For reference, I have done both!
    After reviewing the video, I wanted to retract one point that I made. In the video, I mentioned that you learn more in industry compared to academia. However, I realized that this is not a general statement I can make, but rather my personal experience. As I am fairly new to industry, I am still in the learning curve phase and therefore, my perception may be biased. So please ignore that part. Also I say industry bioinformatics scientist salaries are ~35% higher than academic postdoc salaries when I meant to say ~55%.

    This is very accurate and true. The thing with industry is that it’s highly demanding. Investments and job security is based on performance, hence the salary. There’s no real tenure in industry.

    Very interesting and informative video, thank you! Also, maybe it's just my adhd brain that listens everything on 2x but I think it would be easier to listen if background music was a little bit quieter.

    Once you have your master or PhD. Is there enough job offers in the bioinformatics field (industry) to work remotely, or is something that is hard to find?

    2:16 probably more of the US experience than a UK one tbf

    I will get a bachelor's degree in Forensic Science this year. I plan to spend my year after graduation working (in the best case - IT industry) and learning Python. Also, this year, I am going for the Microsoft Azure certificate in AI and Data fundamentals. So in 2024, I would be more suitable to study Msc in Bioinformatics.
    Do you have any thoughts about the plan or other recommendations of things I should focus on to become a better candidate for the Bioinformatics branch?

      Congratulations on your upcoming degree! It sounds like you have a good plan in place. Not much else I can advise. I think a year working in IT will give you the chance to learn other computational skills as well. Best of luck on your journey!

    What is your job role???

    What is the minimum qualification in order to work in industry as a bioinformatician?

    • @oggyinformatics
      @oggyinformatics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will vary depending on the employer and specific job role but generally at least a bachelors or masters degree in a relevant field. Also depends on the number of years experience/skill set you have.

    • @tzvi7989
      @tzvi7989 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually masters/PhD or masters with equivalent experience

    Sir, what as a bioinformatician what should we focus more such full stack developer or data science and analysis .
    Which skill is need more in bioinformatics data full stack or data scientist???

    • @oggyinformatics
      @oggyinformatics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both data science and full stack development are important skills in bioinformatics, but the specific skill that is more needed will depend on the specific job and project requirements.
      Data science skills are particularly useful for analyzing large datasets, developing algorithms, and building predictive models.
      Full stack development skills are also important for the development of web-based applications, databases, and data visualization tools.
      As for what is needed more, probably data science/ analysis. But both are in demand, so focus on what you prefer.
      PS Having a diverse skill set that includes both data science and full stack development skills will make you extra valuable as a bioinformatics scientist :)

    Hello Sir, i will be doing a Master Bioinformatics at the UNI of Bradford next academic year, do you have ideas on what I could do to become the best?

    • @oggyinformatics
      @oggyinformatics  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! Congrats on getting into the masters program. Here are some tips..
      1) Take advantage of opportunities to meet with your professors outside of class and ask questions about course material or topics that interest you.
      2) Build a strong foundation in biology and computer science + stats (fill any gaps in your knowledge)
      3) Get involved in research (gain practical skills + network)
      4) Attend conferences and workshops if you can (stay up to date on latest developments)
      If you want to be the best you need to be passionate about the field, stay curious and motivated, and take advantage of all the resources available to you at the University. Best of luck!
