I strongly agree with #4 in particular. The context matters heavily on one's personal circumstances. General advice, most times, does not solve personal issues. Props to you for stating that.
Thank you for mentioning the don't go to art school advice, this would help a lot of beginner artists who prefer to improve in a controlled environment but are afraid because an artist they loved told them not to.
I was randomly recommended your videos and I'm so glad! I think your brain works like mine a lot, especially the video about your recommended art books, studying, and pairing them with videos. And your tip on swiping curriculum from an art school? Genius! I'm so excited for you on your art school journey and looking forward to catching up on some more of your older videos as well. Love your energy and I think the videos you make are really valuable. Signed -a very noobie artist just starting to learn the fundamentals at almost 40 years old lol.
OMG! Thank you so much for this. As an aspiring artist, it can be difficult to navigate the world of art and figure out what works and what doesn't. Your advice were so helpful, and I feel like I've learned so much from your video. You’ve definitely earned my sub.
Thank you so much! I faced the same issues as well, so I glad my videos can help people in similar situations looking for solutions. I’m glad you found it helpful 😊
On the whole art school thing, toniko pantoja made a video about it as someone who emigrated to the us and that video was a breath of fresh air I tend to watch a lot of art school videos in the background whilst drawing, mainly because youtube keeps recommending them to me lol
From an American's perspective, I think the discussion of art school being a scam does stem from the fact that some schools were doing just that -- scamming students and not really teaching them anything of value. I didn't go to art school myself, but I as someone who went to school to teach art, I feel that a lot of classes lack what I would call substantial information, whether that be theory or practical use of some materials. There are a few reasons I think this happens, like: Your teacher has decided that fighting with students' to care about the work is no longer working and they're not getting the support they need to make it work. or maybe practical theory is pushed to the side so that students can just express themselves. Or other various reasons -- its a little complex so I don't want to overwhelm with information! I don't think *all* classes are like that, some teachers really do want to be there and pass knowledge down -- but there are schools that have had bad polices/practices and the people who end up suffering are the students -- who then end up in debt bc of how pricey it is. That being said, its good that you pointed out that there is a very practical reason why you are in school, because its not a perspective everyone knows about. I hope you're finding it enjoyable! I'm feeling super inspired by your videos, so I subscribed and can't wait to see what you put out next. :)
Absolutely! I agree, it's something that should be pointed out, especially since it's a significant financial risk. I'm definitely aware of this, and that's why I made it clear that I'm simply sharing my own experience since I don't usually see that side of the conversation talked about online. But I totally agree with all your points. Even I myself have faced some struggles, and I'm in a better situation compared to those types of schools, so I can imagine how frustrating it must be. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your support☺🤗!
A lot of really successful artist say that you shouldn't go to art school because it's a lot of money and you can basically learn all of it on your own at home through books and courses. And they're not really teaching you a whole lot it's just really building network connections to get hired in the industry. What artist suggest that you do now is instead of going to Art School use that money but you would have used to go to school and just create some sort of business around your art
And they're not wrong at all! art school, especially in the US, can be ridiculously expensive. I'm not promoting going to art school, just saying that it's not always a wrong decision as some people make it seem to be, especially if you genuinely want to, or like in my case, need to, attend art school. In the end, it's best to weigh it on a personal level and know if it's worth it for you ☺
@@NeddyisNeddy yeah it kind of sucks if you don't live in a first world country. for people living in First World countries that's why they don't recommend you go to Art School. Sometimes it's like half a million dollars and you also have to do your research there's a lot of really bad art schools out there you have to go to a renowned one. a lot of people get into debt and then they can't pay it back. That's a problem we have over here a lot of people go to school without even knowing if that's what they want to do and then they just end up working in a convenience store trying to pay back that money. Going to school for anything is kind of risky because you're not guaranteed you'll even work in the thing you're going to school for. Back in the day in our grandparents generation you could go to school and then you're guaranteed to be working in that job for the rest of your life but the norm in our society now is people switch careers maybe four or five times because jobs become obsolete. so if you don't know what you want to do it's better just to get a normal job until you decide what you really want to do. I never went to University because really there's nothing I really wanted to do besides art I mean, so I wouldn't want to get into debt. I did that once before I went to school for about a year and I didn't even really want to do the thing I was studying so I dropped out so I didn't waste too much money at least.
What are some misunderstood art advice you’ve heard?
Also don’t forget to share some video recommendations that you would like to see from me 🤗

Yes! You worded this perfectly. Can’t stress enough that everyone’s art journey is different and it all depends on your own personal circumstance
This is the first video I think has tackled the art school dilemma well. Hats off to you.
