I burned out during my PhD....now I know why. I wasn't allowing myself to be creative enough (and a whole bunch of other stuff, i.e. death, covid...). But now trying to heal from burnout, the thing that gives me most energy is my watercolours and sketchbooks ♥️🙏

Thank you for the reassurance. Life turned in a weird direction and now I have a career editing videos.
I'm building a business. I'm learning what businesses already know in order to become consistently profitable; not just a one time lottery ticket winnings of going viral.
The journey is part of the destination. I'm on the journey to my dream career, this is just the start of it.

I’m rooting for you!! When you care about something, it will be a good thing - and you clearly care a lot! 🥹🫶 The long term build is very difficult and can be discouraging sometimes but it’s so worth it - keep going! :)

Yeeees. And the scarcity mindset (which isn't just a mindset, because there really are so few opportunities to actually get payed for doing research). People are scared of telling their friends of their new positions (no matter how shitty or how hard they worked for it), because everybody is just jealous.
It's like the only way to get money are grants
& scholarships oooooor teaching/admin/whatef positions that let you research on the side. (Ir you sell out to some big company or gov party.) The very fact you don't get paid for publishing. Like .... 🤌🤬
They say artists starve. Well, scientists are worse off.

I really appreciate you sharing this story! I had a similar situation happen to me. I really wanted to work towards becoming a full-time artist a few years ago and was even starting to get quite a few commissions. Unfortunately, some close family members started trying to constantly discourage me. I tried so hard to ignore their hurtful words, but it eventually drained my motivation. I haven’t been able to create consistently since, but i started taking some art classes recently, so i have hope that I'll eventually get my motivation back! Your story has really encoraged me ❤

Thankyou for sharing Mary! I can relate in so many ways to your stories, although I kept my art to myself for the longest time, and now finally at 30 starting to share. I think art comes in ebbs and flows and just keeping present for the muse when it is there is more important. Stay true to yourself and your art and dont get caught up in the buzz and hum of the outside world or naysayers like that agent whos in it for purely monetary purposes. Im a primary teacher and I could totally see your illustrations in the classroom, they are brilliant!

It's not that you failed. It's actually just the art world dying. The only artistic job that I could think of that pays well is anything related to games. So concept, splash, animation even them are struggling because most of them are getting replaced by ai. Don't listen to any TH-camrs who flaunt their 5 digit income of them supposed to be by being an "artists" when in reality all of those income actually comes from their social media and stuff.

Instead of following your passion please let me offer an alternative:
Put down your box of colors and get an engineering degree. I recommend Mechanical Engineering (BSME) for its diversity. Then, work world-class projects, making a good salary, saving $$ all the way. After 30 years, retire financially independent. Then, build a gorgeous studio; restart your creative process again, producing art your own terms without regard to financial demands or opinions.
One advantage to this alternative is that it allows you to provide for a family and enjoy a +50 marriage surrounded by children, grandchildren and lots of love as you gracefully age knowing your life has been good; your aim was true to the mark. Good luck to you!! Peace.

This is definitely an option and a very realistic scenario too (I also semi went down this route with my own science career). It sounds like there’s a different equation that works for different people. I think where I was trying to hit was that I really hope no one loses their spark or joy for what they love, no matter how they go about keeping it in their life 🥹
honestly, building yourself a studio sounds beautiful 🥲 if you do that, please do share!
