Chevy Colorado: No Start, No Crank

  • In this video I come into work early because I started to second guess a diag I made on a Chevy Colorado. It wont crank over and I was 99% sure it was the ignition switch. I rerun through my steps just to confirm then make the call and replace the ignition switch as well as relearn the security system. -Enjoy!

This is a common problem on the Colorado and about a $500 repair at the Dealer. My Colorado has only acted up once with the no start. Friend of mine had the repair done as it kept no starting on him. Good to know about the airbag release on these. I used some fluid film over the weekend and I "baaahhhhed" in my head while using it. Thank Eric!

Mr. O, you are an inspiration. I’ve been binge watching your videos for a couple of weeks. I no longer work on cars, but I maintain a fleet of tow trucks.
Not only changing filters and fluids and changing brakes, but most commonly, electrical problems.
Following your attitude of starting simple has helped me tremendously.
Most electrical problems have been result of when the tow truck body was mounted, when a wire is hokey pokey’d looking for power or is chaffed because it wasn’t secured properly. Your approach of looking where someone’s fingers were, has made chasing these issues down a lot easier.
Only problem is, is that when I’m working on a truck, I talk to myself out loud.

Thank you for the longer video, I love to watch your process as much as your diagnosis. Being a home guy that has spine issues and was once interested in being a tech and even started school for it, it really helps me seeing all your repairs no matter how trivial. I'm 51 years old and back in 1986 these electronic cars didn't exist yet and wanting to start maintaining my own modern vehicles your videos are a huge help! I'm finally feeling better for a time I don't know how long that will last and I need to learn as much as I can and you are the best, at least the best I've found to watch. Very informative and great at what you do, so learning from the best is important. Keep up the good work, we need you out here!!!!

G'Day, that road working machine is very old fashioned. It's replacement, grinds up the old asphalt, mixed in some new material, remelts the mixture, lays the new layer, and the road roller following behind, compresses it, all in one action. I have seen them renew more than a kilometre in a day.

These trucks are notorious for the ignition switch. I just did a diag on a 2005 Colorado that had a bad ignition switch. Without removing the wheel I just changed the plastic switch at back of ignition since the barrel was ok from the new barrel, and boom started then wouldn’t stay running. Someone cut the security wire trying to bypass the security start. Connected with and boom still runs perfect. You think they’d recall..Thanks for the video.

lol, videos for guys who are not allowed in the garage because of 'insurance' issues. but it's only because i can rarely trust people who work on my cars/trucks, and that i like to learn how things are done. but i trust you, that is sayin something. now that i am retired it's very relaxing to watch you work through issues. oop thay it is !!!

Great video. It is nice that you do not need a 4K scanner to relearn the lock. Air bags still scare me so I pull the battery cable. The monitors will reset.

Five years ago my '98 Bonneville (160k miles) no crank, no start, let me down in Ferry Port parking lot. Towed to well-known Chain which shall remain nameless. They replaced my starter and battery, still no-go. They put my old starter back in, but i told them to leave the new battery, and they "SHIPPED" it. I paid second tow to a local GM Dealer rather than try my luck fixing it because i wasn't motivated and i needed it to go to work... 850 smackers later i got it back, it was the thread-thin white "Security" wire, so i got a new switch out of it. Security light was blinking when I turned key, but i didnt know at the time that was the culprit, and i wasn't really up to pulling the steering column to run the wire anyway. Oh! And the second tow truck flipped my inner fenderwell inside out somehow causing the tire to rub. I wasnt there for the second tow.😡 Couple years after that I had it on ramps for exhaust leak, and i peeked at the solenoid wires and noticed no nut on the small wire, only held on terminal by tension!🤬 As i brought my hand down, it knocked the "missing" nut off the top of the frame rail and the nut hit me in the face. Well, at least i didn't have to look for a new nut like the Chain should have 😛

Easy way to pop the airbag out: get something like a 1/4" or 3/16" bolt that doesn't have full thread, cut the threads off, and cut a slot in the end of it with a 3" cutoff wheel. It won't slip off, you'll find the airbag comes out very easily. I had a busted off cheapo extension, but the slot in there and it worked incredibly well.
