That thumb guard is also useful for if your issued duty vest comes right down to your beltline. Without it, lots of guys (including me) have had their vests "unsnap" their safariland holster hoods as you sit/stand/move about. You have to constantly be checking to see if you're unsnapped. G-Code has a great holster platform called the mule- it's a drop-leg that's only a little lower than a midride. Basically just a midride with a pivot point, and a single leg strap for the Han Solo look in case you need to shoot first if you're sitting at a table or something. I also like the idea of modular mounting point, not to change holsters but to put the same holster on different platforms depending on what I'm doing. The G-Code/Mule is my go-to configuration when drilling for waifu pillow rescue. My par time is down to 9.8 seconds from start to Sayaka-chan safely extracted from the basement.

Thanks GT! Because of your recommendation for the Safari Land with ALS, I bought one for my new Glock 19X in a similar color. I really like and practice drawing several times a day from all sorts of positions. Before, for my older Ruger P85, I could only get a Serpa for it. I'm not in a service or LEO but it worked for me. A lot of practice drawing there also. Anyway, I always enjoy the subtle humor (sometimes not so subtle) you inject into your videos.

I was thinking about what you were saying about milliseconds mattering, and when I equated it to the ADS (aim down sight) or sprint out time in call of duty, it started to make sense. When entering a gunfight, like you said, milliseconds matter, especially in CoD. Thanks Mike!
The humor in these videos is great, honestly half the reason I watch them is to see who he throws crap at in each video. However, the information presented is definitely a reason to keep coming back as I have learned more about kit from these than from other videos or forums on facebook. It doesnt mean much though as I am just the lowly nerdsofter, and by God keep the jokes coming. Are you sure Haley is dad or just the original clone from which you were spawned?
Just discovered your channel, really enjoy the videos and information. The really cool thing is that you're confirming all of the research and trial and error that I've done. Thank you.
Man, i was thinking last night, life is getting boring without an operator that operates operationally in a field of operations with operational weapons and operational gear. And there he was, with his dry humour and his bony face, GarandThumb saved me from operationals-ness.
Drop leg holsters look Kool....and universally hang up in every vehicle mounted weapon system turrets....the fix is to mount your polymer holster to the top of your armor kit.
Another reason for the Thumb Guard on that Safariland is to combat the "Parolee Chop" I've seen guys who have practiced dropping their hand pinky first onto the inside of the holster like a karate chop and they can disengage both the hood and ALS in one motion. Out of curiosity a couple buddies of mine tried it and found with little to no practice we could do it with a fair amount of ease on holsters without the thumb guard. I would STRONGLY recommend a thumbguard if you're using a holster with a hood and/or ALS especially if it's a duty holster. As usual excellent video keep up the good work.
My department requires us to use state issue level 3 blackhawk SERPAs when we are on transport runs. There is no other option, unfortunately. The tactical team, gets to run whatever holster they want, and are encouraged to use level 1 stuff like regular kydex holsters. Probably the route I'm gonna go
The best material for a holster is Peruvian beaver pelt. The best place to wear it is right above your your boomstick canted due south in direction towards your strong side. Mine has been embroidered with "Ive got your 6," its pretty much a guarantee to win in any gunfight with this system.
I've seen setups with TQ and compact IFAKs on a drop leg platform, I think its a good idea because if you're going to drop anything in an emergency it's more likely going to be your BA not your holster so in that situation you'd still be able to make and plug holes 👍 Personally I use a two strap drop leg much higher than you described. I know that when my arm is relaxed down my side then my hand drops straight onto my sidearm and clears any gear I've got. I find the belt and mid ride holsters more difficult to drive in too.
I have the safariland SLS for a 226 with surefire X300V. Had to take the flashlight cup out of the bottom to make it fit, but that "tactical fuzz" really hurt my draw so i pulled it out no problem. Now i love it.
I had a spectre gear style holster made by TAG, used it all the way till 2012, pretty good holster for my needs and when i drew it took the "saftey decocker " on the m9 off for me
Really enjoying the dry humor and constant amount of jokes at the beginning, but really appreciate the information about the different types of level retention holsters. I am kind of curious as to whether or not someone could use or mix certain products from T.Rex-Arms and G-Code and use them interchangeably. For example: would like to use the QLS system T.Rex-Arms offers, but have an RTI G-code holster system, while adding the leg strap. Kind of a lot to make a holster system work for mid-ride, but just some thoughts.
I will come out and say that I am primarily an airsofter (though I am starting an interest in the real-steel stuff, and trying to shed weight for the Army), and I have practiced drawing a Glock replica from a Cytac-branded Serpa knockoff numerous times; the Cytac holster has a larger paddle with a lot of it resting above the trigger guard area. So with this practice, I've gotten to the point where my finger is sitting on the frame of the pistol well above the trigger guard by the time my pistol is free from the holster. With all of that being said, I was turned well away from paddle-type holsters after last weekend at a pickup game (just an open pay-n-play, nothing big like MilSimWest or Lion Claws). One player on my team was running a Serpa for his 1911 replica, and eventually had his pistol jammed in the holster when some dirt got into the paddle mechanism. Needless to say, that was all I needed to decide against ever using paddle holsters in field conditions, whether airsoft or real-steel in the future.
Thanks for all of your videos. This one really helped me understand what's out there for duty type holsters, which I've been really wondering about here lately.
Learher bianchi outside the waist holster for the 1911; be sure to get the thumb break/snap. That keeps the firearm securely on your hip and will retain said firearm as you move....as for drop leg holsters, well every year we had at least a couple guys shoot themselves trying to learn quick draw.
My department uses the safari land 070. After disengaging the thumb break and middle finger break snaps you have to rock the gun backwards. It's probably the most secure retention holster ever.
Thanks for the next great Video! I use the holster issued by my departement, a Safariland SLS with great effect. Safariland also offers a ride between high and mid and thats perfekt. I've got my holster outfitted with a hood guard which mostly prevents my jacket from falling over the holster For the next time I would love a video on IFAKs. Here more and more officers get their own IFAK for duty due to recent terror attacks! Greetings from Germany!
Big fan of the single strap. In Afghanistan I was issued a serpa drop leg and I took off the top strap and brought the whole thing higher. because it wiggled too much on my leg. I've got Safariland holsters now and I love them so much more. Used to be a serpa fanboy... those were dark times.
A note on the ALS type holsters they are very very popular in sandy environments at least in my experience its prefered that I use them by my agancy and I live in a state with sand , its just something to think about that SLS canget jamed up rolling around in sand or small rocks , being said all mechanical devices can fail have a back up weapon
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this already, but you are mistaken about the ALS hood. It is actually intended to be used as a seatbelt retention device when getting in and out of the car.
I would love to see a video about conceal carry options & holsters. I went ahead and took your advice and bought a Sidecar from T-Rex Arms, hopefully it'll work well for me. Still waiting on it though. Keep up the good work, love your vids!
Got issued a self locking system that was not Safariland and the hood was so flexible that if you didn’t hit the thumb pad just right it would just bend to one side. Can’t believe money was spent on a holster that retains your weapon so well even you can’t draw it!
Mid ride holsters with the strap are my favorite, comfortable, perfect placement for draw, high speed as fuck lol! I despise standard drop leg holsters! Every time I'm issued them, I always deny, I'd rather carry a pistol in a M4 mag pouch then use one.
I used to use a drop leg holster for hunting because it kept my pistol clear of my pack and winter coats. Over time I found that on long hikes into my hunting spot, it would actually pull my hips out of alignment. Walking out at the end of the day was usually very uncomfortable.
I've been using a safariland sls w/hood for 14 years in mid carry for duty. They're reliable but you HAVE TO DRILL on putting the hood back when re holstering. I've seen guys close to lose their guns after forgetting. I'm seriously considering on going sls+als, seems to be best of both worlds. Great content anyway 👍🏻.
Bravo-Zulu!! Im a big fan of G-code holsters and I was able to pick up nib old stock ggcode that was done under Eagle Tactical before GCode was its own brand and I purchased OSH holsters for my Glock, Sig 226, hk usp and m9 for 9 to15 dollars per, SOC for the same pistols for 25 to 53 dollars per plus a bunch of mag pouches, rti adapters for thigh, molle and belt. I have been training with them for the last 3 years and they are far more superior to blackhawk, safariland and spectre holsters. The only issue that I have encountered with gcode is that the XST has an issue with Crimson trace laser units like the one for the springfield XDM and the Glock units but there is no issue with the SOC model and since I have try to keep my conceal carry with both crimson trace laser grps or grip area lasers and TLR-1 HL light system on the SOC allows continuity between both types of carry. During my time in the Navy (2003-2009) I did a TAD tour with ASF and learned what gear I should not waist my own money on. At that time the Blackhawk thigh serpa holster was the standard issue for security but I learned to dislike it because of the the way the straps were setup..
I'd like to see a 25K subscriber special where Mike gets $500 and 15 minutes to get fully kitted at Walmart - because the idea him using a weight vest as a chest rig suddenly amuses me. He then must go Airsoft with randomly chosen subscribers.
So if you’ve come to the comment section looking for advice on the mid ride holster, I’d say just go for it. I’ve been using the mid ride for the past two years in comp and woods carry, I highly recommend.
I've used a both a SERPA style and a Safariland ALS holster. When using the SERPA, I would always draw so my finger landed on the slide above the trigger guard. It was pretty ingrained and felt natural. However, I would never recommend it for two far worse reasons: First, If you had to hit the dirt ( or sand, or snow) before drawing and any sand, mud, or snow gets behind that button, your release is jammed and drawing is impossible. Second, and this actually happened to me, that little button's pin worked itself out and the button fell off the holster. I had to find it and reattach it before I could get my weapon out. Far too unreliable for an EDC. Then I bought the Safariland and it was love at first draw! It is the smoothest, most natural draw with great retention! I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I have had a BLACKHAWK CQC drop my GLOCK just by being shaken upside down (NO MAGAZINE) We test stuff too.
We were issued the Blackhawk serpa lvl3 a month later we got sl6004s because of a safety concern regarding the Blackhawk holsters... Great job
Sorry for bad English not a native speaker
Your fucking awesome Garand Thumb, thanks for rocking our world today!!!
as for the leaning to the side a bit,.. I would note the lean is used as well to take the business end off line from your foot or leg.

What about edgy plate carrier mounted holsters?
I'm not sure if it's these magic crayons but I still keep thinking "Godddamn! Bill Nye's kid is a freakin BAMF" at the beginning of these vids
20000 subs! congratulations!
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this already, but you are mistaken about the ALS hood. It is actually intended to be used as a seatbelt retention device when getting in and out of the car.
I use a SLS/ALS for duty and it's definitely the way to go if there's a likelihood of going hands on.

I'm so happy I'm not alone!
I would love to see a video about conceal carry options & holsters. I went ahead and took your advice and bought a Sidecar from T-Rex Arms, hopefully it'll work well for me. Still waiting on it though. Keep up the good work, love your vids!
Conceal carry video coming soooon
I have a sidecar and I fucking love it
Another cool vid. This channel deserves to have more subscribe bells ringing. Keep it up! Greetings from Poland!
Low drop leg is great for VOPS you can role that to the top of your leg and it gives you room to clear... death before dismount !
2.42 Million subs later. 🔥
Great presentation. This definately helped my holster purchase decision. I ultimately decided on the Safariland 7360RDS for my needs/wants/desires.
Great videos man! Really enjoy watching and learning. Keep up the great work!
So if you’ve come to the comment section looking for advice on the mid ride holster, I’d say just go for it. I’ve been using the mid ride for the past two years in comp and woods carry, I highly recommend.
So we need AT LEAST one anime review now. Good job.
Basic Sensha-do setup
GiTS maybe?
Fucking plebs.
It's obviously Black Lagoon.
Noir. Half that anime is guns.
