You do a great job with reviews. For those that can't reach the overhead handhold, add a strap like those on a bus, trolly, or subway.
A very nice boat. It gives you a lot of nice and usable space in a small size. And if you don't need the space of the larger boat, it makes living actually easier when you have to get into like mediterranean marinas. The galley down totally makes sense as it gives you a huge and comfortable galley and at the same time a large and uncluttered main cabin.
I would have to agree with your summation of the boat. SW has been building these for many years and has won awards with them too, so it is no surprise that the boat is good. I still can't get over Sailing La Vagabond's decision to go the way they did with a trimaran, given how much room they will need with kids and how much room this sub 40fter offers. Crazy. For my money, SW catamarans are a cheaper and safe way to sail the world in most sea states.
As someone who has no interest in sailing around the world or cruising full-time, I am interested in the Rapido. Mainly because I fell in love with sailing by learning to sail little dinghy-sized sailboats from the 90s called Lasers. I totally want to race sailboats, and that is why I think the Ripido might be a great boat for me. I will also have a crew helping me to race it. I will never be at the world-class racing level, therefore it would be a good boat for that use. My idea is all my sailing will be California coastal and maybe down through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean possibly for some races and back. Then maybe cross the Pacific to French Polynesia to explore and then back. I am a bit concerned about what the back would be like on that trip. But most of the time hang out locally and along the Cali coast and find races to race in.
All of that said, I am a bit concerned with that boat as a family boat. I am also not sure what they are going to do when all of a sudden those two boys are huge teenagers? It really doesn't seem like a safe boat for small kids.
@@RiverWoods111 once the boys are teens, they don't need crew anymore. 2cabins may just work. Though I suspect they'll convert to bunks aft once the boys don't want to share a bed anymore. Safety wise, the bathtub living area is probably better as a safe limit for kids than the open transom of most cruising cats. Personally, it's the lack of shade that would be a concern with the Rapido for me.
I give them 12 months and they will be reassessing their choice (which I believe is a partnership deal) - probably looking for a new 'Sponsor' to take them to the 'next level' of sail boat. Their channel is large enough to warrant seeking sponsorship on that level - just as Outremer did years ago. My personal bet is they will try to go to HH cats. But it will depend on offers. Good luck with your sailing hopes for 2024. You couldn't get me into a laser for love or money too slow and lack adjustability/flexibility. Try a foiling Moth, far more exciting.

I have been sailing on a 45 foot trimaran and I can assure you I am very happy to give up space for the performance a trimaran offers. You just can’t beat it
Yes I can understand where you are coming from, my brother also sails a trimaran and says it great for performance -although even the America's cup is contested using Cats rather than tri's, so there's that. But I think you missed my point completely. They have a family. A GROWING family, in EVERY sense of the word with the children getting larger and more active EVERY day. They will need more space asap, and knowing women like I do, the pressure will be applied to move to something bigger, and my bet is it will not take long. As soon as they find another sponsor they will move. Even my brother agrees, it was a poor choice. There might be an advantage to outrunning a storm, but there's is no point racing across oceans if once you get there you're confined to the single cabin or open air tramps with no shade.

They say to get the smallest boat that you can be comfortable on. If that's going to be your motto then the 1170 really is difficult to beat.
I don't like galley downs generally, but having so much open space between the two areas is really cool. Makes the boat work for me.

I had a chance to see this boat while you both were on board in Annapolis! Have to say that this is the bluewater crusing catamaran benchmark under 40ft!

For a sub 40 ft this layout really works. The galley down does offer a very open feeling. Well done review.
I like it. I would switch out the guest aft cabin to get a larger head, and put a single berth where the current guest head is. This would give enough space for a standing shower wet-head, and still a single berth (not losing anything). With the huge salon, I would actually prefer a small pantry or work space over the single berth. If there are kids on board, they’ll be in the salon anyway, and guest couple can have some privacy.

Night Vision Monocular - Have you considered having one? They are very affordable now, a good Bushnell is less than $300us. Great for when you pull into an Anchorage at night... And nice to have when looking out for pirates 🎉
A very interesting comparison. I noticed the HH40?/42 added a drop down transom to keep the boat's length lower - and to try to avoid big marina cost lifts that kick in at 40ft.
I wondered - would a camera system be a help to these boats when furling the front sails? As you say, you can't see them easily from the protected salon. Another option is to place furling winch controls at the inside back station where you can watch the sail being furled and unfurled.
If the watermaker controls seem oddly placed, take it up with Billy. He’s the one that installed them there, not Seawind.
Very nice vid! I think the kids made a very smart decision with the 1170, as being able to rough it (lol) without some of the amenities of the 1370. Just being able to swing into a new cat at their age is awesome. On the other hand, knowing your background (bravo!), your disposable income is well used with 1370 and its amenities are well done and placed. Cats rule for live aboard cruisers! Cheerio!

The water maker controls in the shower were a Billy and Sierra add, and not a Seawind add. There was something else you thought was interesting that was one of their ads, but my ADHD is full on this morning! The good news is I didn't burn down my house while cooking breakfast, LOL.
As far as the guest hull, there are advantages to having guest accommodations not too comfortable! LMAO! I do like the Galley down because it is out of sight a bit, so if you don't do your dishes right as you use them, no one will see them. That is probably my ADHD talking again or my ASD, neither really takes an interest in housework and we are very interest based motivated. I am thinking I will need a crew on my sailboat who do the cleaning, just like at home. Maybe I should ask my housekeeper if she wants to go sailing. Hahaha! Seriously though this is a great under 40-foot sailboat.

Happy new year, and very nice review! Off the top of my head, this looks like a nice sized cat for 2. I would have to figure out how to manage more quality of life things, washer & dryer, more food storage (freezer).
The space under the port side helm seat can be a fridge / freezer !
For someone who can’t reach the upper grab rails, would hanging straps like they have on city buses work? Probably not the prettiest thing, but it looks like those could clamp on to the rail and be removed if they get in the way. Just an idea…
Or maybe a spacer to drop the rail down a bit ??
Nick, I live in South Africa, catamaran heaven but I prefer and love the Seawinds. 1160, 1260 and your 1370. I think the Seawinds are the best with the Maxx cruise right on its tail. Just wish I could afford them. So I've gone and bought the building plans for a Cyber 48 mumby aluminium catamaran....now I must just build it...
You can get the bathmats at Target or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. There is a really cool bathmat that turns red when it is wet. So, if you step out of the shower you leave bloody foot prints and a few blood drips.
With a starting price of 500k US I think I would also look at monohull offerings in the 45-50 ft range. Thanks for you review.

No ours is #2 and was the second of the only two made in Vietnam.
Kitchen below is growing on me. Would hobby horsing be an issue in blue water on a shorter cat? Otherwise, luv the design wih large windows tat open.

That would suit me just fine... I prefer galley down.
Its probably the cat I would go for but you talk a lot about Seawind build quality, and i know new boats have issues, but for example Billy and Sierra had to source and order gas struts for the saloon forward windows because the ones Seawinf fitted were inadequate. It seems a little ridiculous this made it to delivery, as does you inadequate davits issue.
The 1170 is evidence of several things.
1. The designers at SeaWind are among the best in the business. Money cannot buy you a better design
2. That smaller does not mean compromised.
3. Since it is a SeaWind product, the build quality will be as good as the best. That cannot be said of some other big name "luxury" cat builders. These cats broke and many have remained unrepaired and no evidence of the company standing behind their product. What is better than a rock solid warranty? That is NOT NEEDING the warranty. This is where SeaWind shines. The structural design is on par with the layout design. Among the best structurally.

seems more like a smaller version of the 1260 more than a sized down 1370, one thing I have never seen in any review is the CE ratings for the boats

Is your 45’ a better ride than the 40’ when motoring into the wind? I have heard that cats less than 40’ “Hobby Horse” when running in short seas.

Completely disagree about the down galley! We chartered a 1260 and as the main cook, I hated it! Glad we confirmed that experience before buying! Even though it LOOKS like the gally is open to the saloon, I was still completely isolated from all conversation and found communicating with anyone up difficult. And if another person came down to "help" they were just in the way. Its definitely a one person space.

A Baby 1370 - how clever. Sadly this will probably be the death of the 1160.
This would be our choice platform for SC. area . icw down to Fla. and the islands. Will look into engine choice and off grid options. Solar, water maker,fuel and davits. Now pricing ? Great walk about, we learn more watching these tid bit reviews ... Thank you.
