Theme > Niche for a personal brand
What do you mean by theme?
@@DanielJohnFPV instead of niching down to one specific topic it’s more of the ability to be broad within that topic. So for example, instead of doing only reviews of drones (a niche specific channel) a personal branded channel would have a drone theme but then also talk about other topics that interest those viewers and also bring in more story or vlogging elements. The goal to bring in more personality and not making it just about drones. That way, the viewer connects with you and wants to follow more of what you’re doing rather than just coming for a specific topic like a drone review and then leaving
@@JevenDovey that makes a ton of sense, appreciate that. I'm having this debate currently - many FPV channels just review drones or gear and TBH it's boring. They also don't get views because they only apply to really specific people; contrast that with the drone videos that Potato Jet or you do that apply to bigger groups. I'll definitely keep that in mind when filming today. Thanks!
@@DanielJohnFPVPotato Jet and Peter Lindgren, i like and enjoy to watch even is not about drones. but man, i feel nerveous to talk with camera😂
This video and you, Jeven, have helped me to realize that what I'm doing, or trying to do, is exactly this and I feel so much better about it now. My channel started out as a 'how to' channel for RVing, but now I'm doing car camping and road travel vlogs too. My channel is growing slowly, but I feel my viewers connect with me as a person more. Sure, some people stop in just for the 'how to', but in the long run, I believe I'm building a community.
I totally agree with you, Teppo! I've been doing that for the past couple of years! For me, the main benefit is that it feels much more sustainable. Not only do people start to watch your videos for you (and not only for the content), but sharing things that you actually enjoy makes the creating process also more enjoyable! Last year I followed your challenge and posted a video per day during one month (mainly shorts). The content was very engaging for my niche (wine), but I quickly realised that I wouldn't enjoy doing it for a longer time. Instead, vlogging, documenting my everyday life... I could do that for years! I asked my audience (especially in China where I have many more subscribers, ab. 200K) if they would like me to divide the content between two channels (one wine-centered and another more family/lifestyle/vlog-oriented). They all asked me not to, stating that diversity is what they miss the most from most channels! They added they wanted to learn about wine, but also to see what my life is about. That could be a topic for a future video for you: "should you create two channels to avoid dilution?"
Great video Teppo. The A/B storytelling is something I really need to start working more on!
Thanks Matthew!
I always appreciate when other creatives give "permission" to just enjoy ourselves and bring more of our lives and personality into the art we create. Great video :)
Couldn't agree more!
I run a lawncare channel with a primary focus on lawns.
But I cover a broad range of topics, from my own lawn to customers' lawns, product reviews, trade shows, and visiting golf courses and sports grounds to see how the pros do it.
If it's about grass, I will cover it.
Making the same content week in and week out would be challenging over the long haul.
I'm over 5 years in at this point. Focus on making the videos as good as you can and worry less about am I niching down enough or not
I was going to launch into a rebuttle when you started about niches in the beginning 😂 but this is such great advice. I am experiencing some nice growth in a niche but I have slowly developed a very similar strategy introducing my audience to myself and possible "pivot niches" so that I can talk about other products I'm interested in in the future.
Thanks man! I am in place right now where I have no idea where my set focuses on the channel, which is probably going to be bad for me 😅 I suppose I really enjoyed photography and just making videos vlog style. Gonna try to focus on that!
Found the video in my suggested! And instantly subscribed. I actually remember you from Matti´s videos back than. Will go thru the backlog of your channel the next days.
For the topic of the vid.. We kinda boxed myself in with our channel. Shifted the content 10 months ago which let the channel grow rapidly and stuck with it. (ASMR Cinematic PC Build Videos). But now 90% of the sponsorships we get asked for are exactly for that. But i have much love for electronics in general do a lot of DIY repairs and a fan of Retro gaming/pc´s etc. So i am still considering a 2nd channel to experiment with content. And i barely show myself on camera these days. So i wasn´t really able to make a more personal connection with the viewers sadly.
On the other hand i often think about content-fatigue, that at some point people will be bored of the content we create now. Was thinking on maybe trying out some live-streams while building just to make something different in the future!
Sorry for the rambling! And thanks for the great video Teppo!
@@TekTherapy thanks for subscribing, and no problem rambling. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
Hi Ronald ;)
@@TeppoHaapoja Hi Teppo, sorry for the late reply. I for whatever reason didn´t get a notification. Thanks again for the great content. Will stay here!
You’re right on the money. Personal brand development is super important. For example, when doing gear reviews, offer the advice/recommendation and become less of a sales person selling the product to your audience.
Just because you’re getting a percentage with affiliate links, doesn’t mean you should add your own thoughts to something, whether like the product or not.
I think people watching your content will value the personal thoughts or experience with the gear you’re reviewing and will tend to develop a deeper appreciation of the type of content you bring to the space. This will over time garish the support/growth. TH-cam is a long term game.
Feeling disheartened so I am leaving this comment here so that after some hours, days, weeks, months or years when someone likes or comment on it, I will be reminded that I didn’t give up ❤️
Keep at it, one step at at time!
Awesome advice, I love channels, who stray in a little bit of other stuff, while watching them for their main niche
I agree that creating the same content every year can lead to burnout. It's important to infuse your personality into the content, as Teppo suggested, by combining the A and B stories.
Bingo!
Warning long comment ahead, I have a somewhat successful channel now and even though it's just for extra money I make or made anywhere from 1k to 1.8k monthly. I purchased a TH-cam course which I bought to try to up my money. I was told over and over to niche down stop adding anything else except for my purpose. I did for 8 months. I went from 1.8k to 550.00 at best per month. I was floored. I spent all this money on this class and did EVERYTHING they said and took a huge turn for the worse. I quit doing that and now back to my old ways and bam the money is coming back. I mainly do electrical/diy but other things as well. I fully agree with you and thank you for making this video. Love your Channel. Keep up the great work.
Dude, had to check out your channel, you got some great view numbers on both the wildlife stuff as well as the diy electrical stuff, it's almost like they should be on separate channels, but if it's working with both on one channel then that's awesome :D my guess is the "nicheing down" "removed" half your audience/views - over time the amount of views could probably have been built up again with a more narrow niche, but why bother if it works with both :)
@@andresjoberg I know it's so hard to stop being a "mutt" channel but honestly it's making me alot more money so I drift off some but still concentrate on the diy/electrical. Thanks for your input
@@MountaineerOutdoors I’m loving the mutt/mix approach :) And the electrical diy stuff is gold, you’re doing a great job explaining the do’s and dont’s - here in Norway there are *really* strict laws on what you can or can’t do yourself, and even though I never cross that line I love understanding the more complex stuff - so I ended up subbing :)
Glad you found your way back!
@@andresjoberg I appreciate that my friend.
I have a wakeboard channel and videography
Should I do everything on one channel?
Id choose one. But for example if u did a videography channel, you can incorporate some wakeboard sessions while u test cameras or teach about filming etc.
If u did a wakeboarding channel, u could talk about how you film wakeboarding but a very small group of your audience probably cares
Niching down is great but at times when your going to create content that is consistent you will get into times when you feel you have shared most of the topics and also it gets to a point when the passion is becoming a job which is not fun anymore. Thank you for this video Teppo
@@piusgyagenda the problem is you tube ...doesn't work with your channel...it works with your video at hand... That's just how it works you upload it ...the metadata is evaluated ...and they show or they don't. It doesn't matter what you published last time.... Every video is handled on it own merits ...this comes directly from you tube. I heard it many times on channels that advise creators. So why niche at all. Make videos people want to watch that YOU can make
Hey Teppo, love your A story/B story advice. I’ve always gotten low views on NYC vlogs, but I may try to incorporate one of my topics into it! It’s a great way to expand and still get the clicks! Thank you.
I really appreciate this. I’m so tired of being overly specific. It’s not any fun for me. I’ve been trying to revert back to a theme/subject matter that is very broad (travel vlog via Jeeps & RVs) so I can have more fun with it.
Thank you Teppo for this advice, I've been working on my channel and its been hard to find ways to get out of niche so I can express myself. This has helped broaden my idea.
I run an outdoor channel. I used to make lot of fishing vids. I’ve grown my small channel by adding and experimenting with different outdoor content. Seems to have been working so far. My channel is still small though 😅
I think I niched down in the best kind of way. Talking Netflix gives me some flexibility on what i can create. Things like trailer reactions, reviews, news and food to name a few. having "Netflix" as the main point and the taking a step further within that main point creates a room of opportunity.
Thats great!
Yes, it's hard to break out of the mold. I've tried to mix in more personal content with the gear reviews, as you suggest. Those videos get a fraction of the views but retention is high. Not surprising since my core audience watch and enjoy those. I'm going to try to put more of the "B" into the "A." Thanks for the advice.
I agree , main channel should have a definite theme but a good random channel can add something to the mix
Yeah, I have just found that the 2nd channel never stays consistent because people dont have time for it.
@@TeppoHaapoja it becomes a junk drawer. That’s what it’s for, a playground of the mind
'm a huge introvert, lol. But coffee shops are my favorite hangout, love to be around people, but not necessarily talking with them. Small groups, fine, large groups, not so much. :) New channel here, hardly any subs but yeah, it's all about Ebay selling so it's pretty specific.....only shorts so far. This is good advice. Love it. Makes sense. :)
Thank you for such a cool video! I'm struggling too right now deciding what my nieche is exactly about! You have given me a lot of inspiration, man! Thank you!🎉
I'd ask these questions from yourself:
What are you most passionate about?
In what area could you provide value (your skilled or knowledgable in a specific area)
Thanks for the great video…. In 2007 we started BED VLOGGING for 2 years….. but it was never ACTUALLY about Beds [and it was rated “PG’ for “Pretty Good.”. For past 2 years we have been “BEER Vloogging”… but it’s not really about BEER… but, again, about Sweetie & Me… but the niche does help because now Breweries know about us and beer lovers too… But it’s really always been about the chemistry of a ZORK and a Sweetie… sometimes even in BED WITH a Beer. And we found your channel from your brother…. But we keep tuning in for YOU… Keep the videos coming… subject doesn’t really matter [much]…. YOU matter.
😢- Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ 🤣Professional🤣Poets & Bed 🛏️ & Beer🍺 Vloggers ]
I've been told by various people that by focusing on one car brand I have niched down too much but I find with other overlanding channels the brand of the vehicle (to the creator) doesn't matter with the content. I just saw a content gap and took it.
I've been doing TH-cam for 4 years and only have 300 subs. Mainly I've been a channel focused on my life not just my interests. I've tried to keep my interests the main thing, but yes, because I like so many different things I suffer from being all over the map. However, if I ever make it big on TH-cam I won't have to change who I am or what I film. I like that Idea.
This is exactly why I've done the "broad niche" approach :) The "broad niche" being documenting what I do to learn how to make videos for my business (and in extension of that helping others out that also want to start), and as an extension of that being able to make videos about *anything* related to making videos, be it building a magnetic ceiling mount system for holding my phone while filming (upcoming video) one week, and then making a davinci resolve speed editor review the next week - I might not get the "hardcore viewers" of Davinci Resolve-videos as subs, but there are so many more people out there that wants general advice on "making videos" and "how to start" as well as specifics on certain aspects.
Over time I will be able to expand on this and make more complex but related videos on how to take things to the next level (hopefully) - but *everybody* has to start somewhere, and sometimes that's your phone and a piece of cardboard to hold it steady while filming ;)
True!
Great advice Teppo! This resonated with me as I continue my YT journey.
Solid advice!
This channel is almost dead
The color grading in this video is really amazing
Thanks! Im using my Cinema LUT Collection if you want to check it out,

Great vid! I love FPV drones and wildlife. a tough duo niche, but I'm trying to incorporate them with my life in Alaska.
Nice man! Do it!
I niched up, I post what I want. And see what works or not. I will not force myself to follow one path. But as always good advice Teppo👍
same. so far very little interest but I don't really mind
I like this approach. It gives you the flexibility you need to make your channel your own.
Agreed!
Make sense to me, and totally agree about two stories aspect. It changes aaaaa lot! Sometimes, I don't even care about a brand new gear but I'm happy to watch what's happening in your life :)
From my experience, the only important thing here is to remember about aspect of the quality regarding that mix. I had been trying to mix myself aka my lifestyle with technical things about web design, and people were disappointed that it's not fully tech-ish content. It has to be really well planned and recorded to do not separate it weirdly. Tastes like a fake then :)
It's great to see you back BTW! :D
HA thanks David, have I been gone?

Great advice for a guy with a Vision Pro Channel!
Thanks Teppo for the advice! This is super helpful :)
Here to serve!
I agree with you because the videos that did well on my channel are those that were a bit random, but still about what I loved.
Nice!
I like to call my channel a "car infused Life channel" because I do a lot of car stuff, but I reach out of that in lots of ways.
Nice!
Good advice. Cheers Teppo!
Your video reminded me of how much I miss Matti's videos
HA I take that as a compliment. Matti makes great content.

Good video, makes a lot of sense 👍
Its not only boring for the creator, its boring for the viewer. Theres lots of creators that I like that I have stopped watching their videos because its the same thing, over and over and over. Funny I saw this video, I made a similar post on reddit this week. Hell I dont even have a large following but I know what I like as a viewer.
Nice tip Teppo thanks! 🙏
Thanks Charlie! Glad you enjoyed the video
Couldn’t agree more!! Great video bro
Thanks man 🙌
My interests are far too widespread to niche down hard for a channel. Not that my channel is performing anyway, but that is another problem :).
He's alive!!!
HAH have I been gone!?
great advice. earned my sub too

Cmon man gives us the tweak. You keep saying blah blah but theres one tweak....blah blah some more. Maybe the tweak is in the comments. Nice video pleasant to watch you go through your day ...but wasnt this basically a matter of using a hook a bit too hard. If theres one tweak just tell us
Ha I do not know how you missed it 😂
@@TeppoHaapoja because I didn't have time to wade through the whole video for a tweak promised at the beginning. I simply surmised it wasn't that much help and this cat didn't have anything else

Niche down gave me depression
Kidding lol , but it does make very bored sometimes , I think there is a lot into doing what you want because it seems more genuine than forcing a niche down
