- I submitted a Golden Age grail comic book to CGC for restoration removal - something I've never done before 😬
Were they able to remove it? What grade did it get? Make sure to watch until the end for the full story! 👍

Thank you very much - you may wish to use another professional group to crack, press, remove restoration besides CGC if you have an issue with the company and then resubmit. Yes, it is a risk, but you are in a better position to tell “how much” of a risk. It’s a very high grade AF15 so its value is substantial with a blue label; it’s a great book in any collection in any grade. Oh - fantastic call on the WW book using CGC for the “small fix” on a “lesser” book - the approach to AF15 certainly warrants reflection. Regardless - great books, great video.
That's a great point I hadn't considered, definitely seems better not to use CGC if I'm going to have the af 15 looked at.
Thanks, I thought a small amount of restoration would be a good trial run and CGC seemed like the right choice for something so minor, especially since I had the credit with them
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
As a fellow cleaner and presser. I recommend Kenny Sanderson for the AF15
Awesome, thanks for the recommendation!
If staples were replaced it is always restored, CGC told me
Yeah, I've got a couple of those
I used Phantom Restoration to remove restoration on a 3.5 JiM 83. It came back a blue label 2.5 which I’m happy with since it was a ton of color touch and some sealing. Definitely recommend.
BTW - The label said “ slight color touch”, but it wax at least what I’d call a moderate amount. I thing cgc missed a bunch when they originally graded it.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check them out
Just an FYI, I learned a few years ago that, when CGC says "slight" color touch, they are referring to the largest size of any individual color touch on the cover and not a collective amount of color touch on the cover. So, if the single largest color touch on a cover is no bigger than the head of a push pin (for example; I'm not familiar with their actual size delineations), they'll still say "slight" color touch even if there are 15-20 such touches across the cover. Confusing to say the least.
@@jeffstanley6013 Good to know, thanks for the info!
Great result! Definitely doesn’t detract from the visuals
I agree, thanks!
As awesome as that Wonder Women book is... I'd kill for that AF 15 7.0.... Wow! Even in purple... That grade is crazy expensive!
Thanks, appreciate it! Love the book 🙂
So any resto removal done by cgc is simply cutting off pieces that had color touch on them. And opening the spine splits again. So extensive damage to a 7.0 grade. I think it would go down to at least a 5.0 but maybe lower.
Definitely possible for sure. Based on what I paid and what a blue label is worth, still 100% worth it though value wise
I have never heard a 1.8 or did i hear that wrong ,are grades different for restoration?
The grades are the same for universal and restored, a 1.8 is considered good minus and is a seldom used grade nowadays
But yeah, you did hear correctly. Thanks for the question!
No, they don't have different grades for restoration. 1.8 (Good -, in between a 1.5 (Fair/Good) and a 2.0 (Good)) has been on their scale as far back as I can remember; it's just that most books in that condition don't get submitted for grading, so it's not too terribly common to see.
I fear the way people today are shocked that in the 80s people would trim and use color touch to "improve" their books. Collectors will be shocked in twenty years that people use to cut holes in their books to get blue labels instead of purple ones
I do think restoration is an underrated way to find keys at more affordable prices
I am not an expert on restoration or it's removal, but I'd be super conservative in considering all your options. My main worry about going with another restoration remover would be...what if you do all that, and it still comes back from CGC with a purple label, after spending 3% of whatever you're going to claim as the FMV? I'm not saying CGC would do a single iota of better work, mind you--nor am I a CGC shill--I'd just be super stressed about the potential wasted $$$. Finally, I'd look at the CGC guide for grading comics and see what the ceiling grade for a comic with a large spine split (let's assume it'll be large---be conservative, remember). So as a general rule of thumb, I'd just throw out a 4.0 bottom 5.0 max and go from there? 6.0 blue label seems high...I think Fine is above the ceiling for a split spine. I don't know, just theorizing how I'd logically approach the issue at hand (or issue in hand, haha). I wonder if CGC is able to pre-screen the book if they determine they can do the resto and what it might be after? Nah, I doubt it--seems a bridge too far, particularly given your last verbal "projection" from you-know-who. Keep us posted!
Great point, I'd hate to do the work and have it come back purple still. I agree 6.0 seems optimistic, in reality based on what I paid, the book would have to come back a 3.5 or lower to be a loss, so there's a lot of wiggle room. I'll definitely keep you posted!
So what if it was reattached I rather have the piece
Because the book is then considered restored and gets a purple label and the value drastically goes down, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50%
That AF15 🤤
Grail of mine for sure
Nice!
Thanks!
Nice
Thanks!
Sorry I can’t recommend anything helpful about this level of comic collecting but wow nice books!
I totally understand, thanks for the kind words though and for watching!
