Just for the record: John had replaced Chad, then David Boise replaced Joe Frazier, and, finally, Mike Johnson replaced Mike Kobluk. With the last original member leaving the group, Chad got to take back his last name, and the group became Denver, Boise & Johnson, played a number of shows, and faded into obscurity. That's me in the background, with the beard.
Had the pleasure of having lunch with Michael Johnson, then walking together back to the parking lot following his performances at the New Bedford Folk Festival. Have met and work-shopped with many artists, with few as sensitive and gracious as him. RIP
I've seen Micheal Johnson in concert twice, the last time jsut a few weeks ago. At the age of 68 he's still a phenomenal performer and if you get the chance to see him, jump on it. It will be a concert you'll never forget.
I am in Aspen singing with a few band members and tribute artists that performed with John Denver. Michael Johnson was a friend and I learned as much from him as I did John- we all did! Michael was amazing- they are both gone- Paul Prestopino is wonderful sounding so much like Dick Kniss! Thanks for listening !
Yesterday I listened to Joni Mitchell's early and later versions of "Both Sides Now" both the original and the fairly recent live Newport Folk Festival... and big man busted out in tears... what a gift she is.
This is a killer version of "Both sides now". John Denver, and David Boise, with Michael Johnson on lead vocal really do nail this one. Looks like their buddy Paul Prestopino on backup guitar with them too. This one is a gem. Thanks for posting this.
Interestingly enough, the lead singer here is Michael Johnson (eventually would do the song Bluer than Blue, This Nighe won't last forever, etc.) Chad Mitchell isn't in this group...reason why John Denver decided to name Denver, Boise and Johnson. However, this is one of the best renditions of Both Sides I've evern hear. Excellent....thanks for posting!
To PhaedrusNYC - a very, very belated reply: I loved working with DB&J every bit as much as with the earlier versions of the Mitchell Trio. For the record, each time there was a personnel change, we gained another guitar. In addition to John and Mike, David Boise also played. I frequently ended up tuning my D-28 down and playing bass lines, but that was a terrific learning experience for me. We made some very fine music as the group, along with many other "folk" artists, was fading slowly into obscurity..... And, also very belated, thanks to those of you who've given me compliments.
Beautiful singing and guitar! The captions and voiceover with the incorrect information must have been added later. This video and two others from the same performance are on Michael Johnson's website. Those videos also contain the incorrect captions and voiceover.
@greenmudbug I get that feeling. I was born in the 70's, so I missed out on that time, but what a magical and free time it was. I choose to live that way now. :) There are some great modern duets I enjoy that you might too, check out Storyhill, amazing harmonies and guitar work. Albums: Storyhill Live & Clearing (Formerly known as Chris and Johnny) Blessings!
Wow! The real Paul Prestopino posting! Thanks for your great work- one question, though. Did you find working with Denver, Boise, and Johnson more or less fulfilling than your work with the Mitchell Trio? I notice watching this that two of the trio actually played instruments, whereas the Mitchell Trio were known for simply singing- I wonder whether you enjoyed working with musicians or whether you felt more redundant than you had previously.

Johnson's velvet voice is the stand out here. Incredibly soulful.

One of favorite song of all time 😎
Wow! Paul Prestopino! You're guitar playing is amazing! Kudos to you, sir. I stand in awe. :-)
Also 5-string banjo and mandolin.
One word beautiful......
Beautiful version with good guitar playing, good backing vocals and beautiful melancholic voice of Paul Johnson (RIP).
Beautiful singing and guitar!

This video doesn't show it, but Boise also played guitar.
Awesome version! IMO better then Judy collins version.
Michael Johnson passed yesterday, 25th July 2017. RIP, dear Michael...
Fantastic frozen in time performance.
Main Mitchell here is Joni's wonderful song
Just as good as it gets
wonderful!
Love John Denver and Michael Johnson, but this type of folk music died when Dylan and the Beatles came along.
MA-Rider, there's just nothing like beautiful harmony singing. Call me old-fashioned. I love it.
Good music never dies. It may not be in vogue for a while, but there's always an audience.
😂😂Didn't die for me!! It is engrained in my being.😂😂 since I was 9 yrs old. In 67.😊
good harmony.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
cool
