They actually did use instruments in this song. They were on the US Masked Singer show and they sang this live to a backing track on the show. There is a video out there with them singing this live and unmasked from the show.

The unmasked version is really spectacular. Honestly, when they sang it while masked my thoughts were that they should have chosen a different song to win, but when they sang it again after being unmasked it just got me so hard.
@@rfiliagaful The unmasked version was the most raw emotion I've heard them put into a song since Love Lockdown. And that's not a knock - PTX are so good but they rarely go for this type of tune, where you're taking some sort of pain and channeling it into your singing. They don't need to go down this path all the time but I do hope they revisit it every now and then.
The first performance they did in costume was incredible. The second performance after they got unmasked was even better.
@@BloodTithingsGaming I was completely unfamiliar with the song before this and I think I was so taken aback by the totally different style and sound that my first thought was... Not negative, but not positive either. It wasn't until I heard it again after the unmasking that its true genius began to become clearer to me. I've now listened to it multiple times as well as listening to the original artist and a version with Bryan Justin Crum. I have to now say I far prefer PTX's unmasked performance over all the others I've heard.
Mitch is the one singing in the rafters and then Scott does join just below him. Check out Mars solo from Scott and you’ll hear his whole range, the official video is stunning, but also the love choir version vocals are insane. This was from their performance on the masked singer and like others have said this one isn’t a cappella, although it’s still very clearly vocal forward. They have a video version of this from when they were unmasked where you see them sing this.
Kirstin is singing with Mitch. If you watch the video Scott switched to harmony with Matt.
@@marykuettner752 maybe… I do think in the audio I hear Scott’s voice with Mitch. I know Mitch and Kirstie can sound similar, but I’ve never heard Kirstie sound like Scott. I also wonder if they may have done it slightly different on stage versus the audio release.
You should watch/listen to their Prayers for this World, the maturity in all their voices is phenomenal. Scott especially.
They’re on a world tour (European part currently) and then in the US in August.
They aren’t moving away from A capella-they chose to do a competition “the masked singer” which uses instruments, it was a way to sample and try new things, test their creativity in another form w/their foundation of A capella.
This one they used their 5 part harmony, a drum and electric guitar to add the rock feel. It’s awesome, and something fun to consider is that both Kevin and Matt can used the electric cello and drums at concerts and be able to preform it live if they wish to.
I really like this cover by PTX, it’s different, and they don’t limit themselves nor their creative bents, they always add new elements to their style and keep growing and maturing their amazing sound-they couldn’t do full A capella on the masked singer show either, it would’ve been a dead giveaway-
They should’ve won the season 9, they were the best vocalist, I agree with most, that it was a rigged show, but that’s how those things work in the industry on these singing competitions.
They’re called themselves the California Rolls on the show and you can watch all their performances, their is a longer video posted on TH-cam of them being “unmasked”, talking to the judges and explaining their reasons for being on the show, then singing/performing “creep” as the credits run…it’s truly amazing to watch all of them sing it live-mind blowing actually-sounds even better than this recording IMPO:-)
they mentioned in an interview after they were unmasked that they were inspired that people recognized and loved them on the masked singer even with music because it means they don't have to be "just" an a cappella band anymore and that they plan on doing more non-a cappella releases in the future!
They were totally robbed of winning Masked Singer. I agree, this is now a favorite PTX song of mine and best cover ever!!

Speaking of Freddie mercury, they do bohemian rhapsody (Mitch leads most of the song) and then also they did a show where they did Somebody to love and Mitch kills it singing Freddie mercurys parts. It’s worth checking out.
There’s a video of their unmasking on the Masked Singer on TH-cam where they sing this. They also performed it in their California Roll costumes.
Pentatonix has been touring UK/Europe since May 1st. They had concerts in Amsterdam May 10th and May 11th. They will be touring Europe for the rest of May. Thanks for the reaction. This song was not done as acappella. There are instruments.

That three way battle was the worst!!! Two rockers were singing against an a capella group. I stopped watching after season 3. I attended the finale of Season 3. Watching them make the show was far more entertaining than watching the show.

You need to watch their performances from the masked singer. They were unmasked last week and got third place. Im upset because they should have gone on to win first place. After they were unmasked they sang this. It was amazing.

Let's see so they were on the Masked Singer...just revealed ( what this track is from)...they filmed a Netflix Christmas Rom-com in April and they are currently on a World Tour through May and then will pick up a US summer tour in a couple months. Members have leaked that they have another original album in the works plus gearing up for Christmas. Lol they are busy bees 😂

I think it was Mitch and Kevin singing together in the stratosphere. And yes, there was a backing band involved also.
It was Kirstin.
Piano and drums were used, as others have said. Yes, that's Mitch doing the high notes. However, at the very last of his climbing "run" wording, you hear a slightly higher pitch over the top. This will show you who's singing what. Their awesome post production team took the show version, cleaned it up (which lets you hear both Kevin and Matt far bettter than on the show version).

I am a huge PTX fan, but I would like you to react to Brian Justin Crum's version of Creep.
So glad to see you doing PTX again. Many more of their songs are out there. They didn't release many songs for a year due to Kirstie's pregnancy.
This was taken from their performance on The Masked Singer, so you do hear instruments. Kevin said they wanted to do the show, because using instruments wasn't normal for them
And also, if Kevin was beat boxing it would be a dead giveaway that it was them. Sure, it was obvious from the beginning but if Kevin beat boxed, it would've been like they didn't even try to disguise themselves.

@@anessalyn1035 Scott tried to disguise his voice and failed drastically. But that because there really isn't anyone who sounds like him. Same with all the members. That's one of the main reasons why people love them so much, because they feel like a breath of fresh air
@@radioactive_baby0706 they all have very distinctive vocals, but he tried. I really liked how he did Creep and Paparazzi. His voice was incredible, I don't know if I've heard him sing with that kind of raspy almost growl before. Simply fantastic 👏

I'm not sure where you are located in Europe, but in any case, this was from a performance on the TV show, "The Masked Singer." When they sing on network and similar shows, they often have a hard time convincing the producers to can the special effects and the band and the EQ and just let these guys sing, but oh well. So your ears are not deceiving you, they had an electric guitar, and probably more because it wasn't their show, it was somebody else's. That said, I still loved it. There are a couple of versions of them singing this song, and if you look for it, I recommend it. Their disguise was as the "California Rolls" and they were supposed to be five sushi pieces. It's lots of fun to check out the unmasked version at the end of the performance.
Like most of people said they are using instruments, and singing, this was from the masked singer, and they need instruments, but still sound incredible, you should watch them sing this on the show..
Touring Europe now and will be touring back in US in summer. Going to see them live for first time in summer. So excited. This was from the masked singer show so they were playing some instruments to try and hide who they were.
I have been waiting to hear Scott sing in a more rock centric way. His voice is perfect for it.

Scott is a chameleon. The guy can sing a duet with darn near anyone and gain new appreciation for his skill. You need to listen to his single release: Mars. (Also an original video).

Covid and Kirstie's baby put a crimp in their output, but they are up and running again.
They performed this on The Masked Singer as part of their normal competition, then did a live version of it when they were unmasked after being eliminated (they came in 3rd). The show uses instrumental tracks for the contestants, so they performed with instruments - except for a small portion of one of their songs at the end, where they went a cappella and actually used their everybody-singing-different-melodies-at-the-same-time technique too - it was a dead-giveaway if you were at all familiar with PTX.

In recent years, Pentatonix has used an increasing amount of vocal processing, particularly on their original songs. So some of the backing track that sounds like synthesizers could be their vocals and vocal percussion, electronically processed to sound like synths. I noticed on the "unmasked" live version of "Creep" that Kevin seemed to be beatboxing occasionally.

The last album Pentatonix released was their 2022 holiday album, "Holidays Around the World", where they collaborated with other TH-cam stars from all over the world. They have always had some tracks on their Christmas albums where they used instruments, and some of the tracks on the 2022 album were more "produced" than ever. Since they are on tour most of this year, fans are hoping for a new album or two this year, since they do a lot of their arranging in hotel rooms and tour buses.

This is from the TV singing competition show "The Masked Singer." The contestants are completely disguised. One contestant is voted off the show each week by votes of the audience and judges. Pentatonix was disguised as "The California Roll" (sushi reference) and made it to the May 11 show where they performed, among others, "Creep." As with most signing competition shows, the contestant performs an abbreviated version of the song, not the full song. This is a short track because it basically came from the show's soundtrack. In case you weren’t aware, Kevin can sing E5 in falsetto. You’d be surprised how many high notes he actually sings either directly or in a layered format. He did it in Imagine, and Matt can also get to f4and so can Scott (check out the live stream of Hallelujah at Hollywood Bowl) Radiohead sounds a lot like this, but might be thinking of Evanescence or Paramore as a montage backing track. They do use instruments on occasion like cello or piano and the occasional string section at live shows.
This was one of the Masked Singer songs. They had to use instruments. The really high notes were sung by Mitch with Kirstie under him.

I am pretty convinced that Mitch is a reincarnation of Freddie Mercury - if you check out the unmasked version of it someone linked it down below - Mitch even LOOKS like Freddie Mercury here. It's so uncanny he is like the spitting image of Freddie, can sing like him, and was born a year after Freddie passed away. Tell me that is not coincidence!

This is not a capella. They're using instruments - they sang this on the TV show "The Masked Singer". PTX are definitely moving away from the "a capella" label
They're not moving away at all. They keep doing acapella almost everything and every album. They're allowed to use instruments as well sometimes.
@@Fergiebooh1 It's a matter of perception. I see them as moving away and trying to shuck the label (you'll notice they never refer to themselves as "an a capella group"), although the vocal harmonies will obviously always be at the centre of their work. All this talk in the post-Masked Singer interviews about stretching themselves and going in a new direction signals, IMO, a move away from a capella as their defining genre. But time will tell which of us is right. They're dropping hints about a new album of originals, so we'll see then what they're up to. Any way they choose, I'm along for the ride.
@@moragcarnie843 On their 10th anniversary, Scott mentioned that there is a "second 10-year plan." There was an interview somewhere where an records exec who was smarter than the average said to them "I get it. You want to be a pop group and a capella is how you're going to get there."
