I disagree… I prefer having a tablet that doesn’t work as a MacBook Pro. I mean the 12.9” iPad is huge to hold as a tablet already so if they would create a16” to work as a hybrid would be ridiculous. I have the 2018 11” cellular and 15” MBP from 2016. They both still work as new btw apart from the fact that I can’t download latest Mac OS on my MBP. But, I’ll keep it for another 2-3 years if no issues happen with it because the battery still holds its own for over 5-6 hours which is still better than many Win laptops.

It all depends on what your are doing. Every device has its limitations, for the arm version of Surface, its the incompatibility of apps not being compiled to run natively on Arm. One advantage I see for the Surface is, that it has a mature operating System, meaning it can run full version of Adobe Creative Cloud applications instead of the limited versions available for the iPad...but taht advantage comes short due to the ARM architecture, which limits the available applications again.

Windows on ARM has been good since the release of Windows 11. I used to tell people that the main reason to upgrade to Windows 11 is if you have an ARM PC. You can run just about everything except for SQL Server 2019, Dropbox, and probably Google Drive. But OneDrive works, SQL Server 2014 works, and there are lots of natively compiled Microsoft apps for ARM64. Upgrading with a 2230 drive on the Surface is one of the best features.

To me the key difference here is versatility and when it comes to that the surface simply kills the ipad in every possible way. Millions of programs, not a closed system, you can connect any device very easily, much better multitasking and so on.
Numbers are just numbers, I love the ratio aspect of the ipad because I read a lot of comic books and it's perfect for that but for pretty much everything else the Surface is better, you have a tablet and you have a real computer. The speakers are great, by the way, just because the iPad's might be better doesn't mean the Surface's are bad, far from it.

Also, the surface can stand on its own without the keyboard and the keyboard can be magnetically attached to the screen for an angled typing experience if you don't like typing flat on the table.

For those don’t understand the tech. behind Apple Silicon and saying it’s ARM and you can have the same or better on PC if they use ARM!
If that’s true the latest Snapdragon or Tensor could compare with iPhones, but they can’t. It’s like at least 2 gen. faster on iPhone. iPhone 12 Pro is still faster than most ARM chips on Android and the A15 on iPhone 13 Pro from 2021 is faster than anything out there. And now we got A16 and M2!
So yeah, it’s not ARM, it’s Apple Silicon and the tech. behind it. The Apple custom design, the cores, the cache, the shared memory, the insane memory bandwidth that’s multiple times faster than any PC in the world, the dedicated codecs, the insane neural engine and the GFX, the insane memory speeds, the insane storage speed and custom controllers, the energy efficiency which affects throttling, etc. it’s like future and it’s putting everything else to shame.
So I think iPad OS is perfect? No way, Apple is adding features bringing it closer to desktop but it still need more. But this “Crippled OS” is way better than desktop in managing RAM, much more stable and reliable, you don’t have sluggishness, freezes, restarts, viruses, cache problems (like on Android), windows drivers, registry and BSOD or updates pop up and restarts right when you’re ready to enter an important meeting! So, if you can get you’re job done on the iPad you’ll be faster, cooler, and more productive with better experience.
Apple silicon is much faster, more responsive, has better codecs and neural engine (machine learning and AI) than anything else.
So it’s not JUST benchmarks. Look at the browsing speed difference, export times and switching apps, those are clear PRACTICAL difference.
BTW, I’m a computer engineer and I work with computers HW and SW since 80s, and I use all kind of HW OSs and SW. and this is my honest opinion based of my knowledge and my practical experience as a developer, manager, student, eMarketer, etc. I run my meetings, complex servers setups and my business from my iPad Pro for almost a decade now. And I only reach my MacBook Pro with 2 27” screens when I need Xcode or highly pro stuff. Everything else is fine on the iPad and I take it everywhere. I don’t game, I don’t have time for it. But years ago I used it for Need for speed, and now I install some Apple Arcade games for my kids, not. a console grade but they are getting better, and I’m sure when RayTracing will come with M3 many triple A titles will move to Apple Silicon as it will be more profitable, because people spend more on Apple devices and SW, and because developers need to design once only and publish for Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and macs after miner modifications. So they’ll get much better exposed, wider audience and even people or kids who don’t have access to high-end gaming PCs or consoles, can have a cheap Apple Silicon device, be it an iPhone, iPad, etc. Apple Silicon is the master plan and the sleeping Whale that is just started waking. It’s only the beginning.
Remember when Job’s revealed the iPhone with no keyboard and everybody was laughing at him, including big brands back then like Nokia, RIM (Blackberry) and Microsoft’s Steve Balmer! Look how everybody is trying to copy it in everything, and who didn’t kissed goodbye to business.
The iPad was mocked as a big iPhone or just a eBook reader then everybody started trying to copy it when it started to canalise the PC market and wasting the market share of artists and photographers.
The Apple Watch was mocked and in only few years it became the number one watch in the world with s market share might higher than all digital and classic dumb watches including all Swiss watches!
Apple TV+ service that started with zero in its catalogue and now taking over HuLu’s market share and climbing.
And the list goes on and on. Apple didn’t become the first company with $1B and then the first company with $2B, then the first company to break the $3B out of thin air or because they sell expensive overpriced devices to their STUPID BRAIN WASHED FANS. The have a clear view to the future, besT business module, best supply chain, best quality, best stores, best marketing, best customer service, best experience, best privacy, best reliability, etc. I’m not saying they are perfect or they are your friends, no they’re not, they work for money, but they give you good HW, SW, services and experience for the money you pay (unlike others) and their stuff work together seamlessly. And the resale value stays and doesn’t fall like all the rest, so spending more pays itself on the long run. I’d rather spend more to get better everything rather than spending less and getting inferior experience with no echo system and little to no resale value. It to each his own.

As far as what I found is that the SQ3 chip is based on SD8cx Gen 3. The 8cx Gen 3 has 4x X1 core and 4x A78 cores. So it is a big boy chip rocking 8 big cores. Yet They are just no match for the 4 big cores on M2 which are ofc based on A15 but also are overclocked. From geekbench it seems like this SQ3/8cxG3 performs very similar to A16 chip in the iPhone.

@@YG-rt5yk Not sure if it was a possibility to put the X3 core when it was announced almost 1 year ago but maybe the X2 would have been nice. To be honest the difference is not all that dramatic between X1 and X2. Another interesting thing is that they used A78 and not the A710. The chip is ARMv8 and not ARMv9. Maybe that's also the reason why they went with X1 and not X2. Tho there was a video explaining that the A78 is actually better and more efficient than A710 despite being based on ARMv8 and not ARMv9 which A710 is based on. Still it shouldn't be that bad in terms of performance. The geekbench score suggest a performance similar if not slightly better than A16's CPU. Yes the single core is 80-90% better on A16 but overall multi-core is very similar - 5700 compared to around 5500 on A16. Maybe the it performs worse due to having slightly inferior GPU to A16 but that is also not a reason for such a humiliating result. It could be an optimization issue

It's not just technology, it's economics. Qualcomm can't come close to competing with Apple. Apple amortizes the cost of these very expensive chips over 300 million units including iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Qualcomm is lucky if they sell 3 million. Plus Qualcomm is selling the chip to another company like Microsoft in this case. They have to be concerned about the pricing on the chip so that MS would consider buying it.
Qualcomm just makes the margin on the chip component. Apple makes about a 39% margin over the entire unit. At the end of the day Apple can afford to do so much more with the chips than Qualcomm.

a shocking difference, however there is one problem. The iPad cannot be used as a laptop replacement, the Surface can. For the slightly bigger part of us who don't use Lightroom (regularly) the Surface might just work better as an all in one device (I'm telling this as an iPad fan). Apple will keep us wating for a decade until everybody else makes good enough tablets with keyboards before they give in and give us a decent iPadOS.... So - although I was waiting for a capable iPad Pro for 1,5 years - I will probably buy a cheap iPad for internet/youtube/mail and casual streaming (wow no miniLED, so what, if I want movie experience I will watch TV) and a Windows laptop for everything else...
Oh and another, I guess many will agree that a good camera on a tablet is fully unnecessary, I would be curious to know how many tablet users make photos with their tables, I bet it's less than 2% (exept kids making photos of dogs being funny).... It is the phone that needs a good camera...

No it can, it just can’t replace a computer. You don’t seem to understand what people use a 13 inch laptop for, which is web browsing, scrolling social media, transfer files, view and edit photos, watch movies and TV shows, listening to music with the speakers, write an e-mails, and working with Microsoft Office, or even doing some light video editing, all of which can be done perfectly well on an iPad. If you want to do professional 8K video editing, you’ll be looking for a $2000 plus professional laptop or desktop anyway, a sub $2000 iPad Pro or Macbook shouldn’t be what you are looking for, and definitely not a Surface that is 6 times slower just exporting a photo, plus for none professional video editing, Lumafusion and Davinci resolve should be more than enough for normal video editing on the iPad, not to mention the iPad can edit in P3 Dolby vision HDR while you’re stuck with rec.709 SDR video editing that is 6 times slower; doesn’t matter if you can run Premier when your battery dies before you can even finish exporting your video.

if you are not a artist or a musician who already owns a desktop/laptop, go for the surface. The surface is so much versatile.

For me these two don't compare. Both are made for different uses and markets. I have both and older Surface and an ipad pro and use them for different purposes. The only reason I have a Surface is because it runs full windows and for my real estate business I have to run Windows only apps and I like the ultra portability of the Surface. But for anything else the ipad is hands down the winner.

It's all a matter of your use case. I never boot up my PC anymore. I just use my Galaxy tab s8 ultra for 95% of what I do. Since I'm in the Samsung ecosystem it's way better than either the iPad Pro or the Surface, but that's just for me and my uses. Great comparison.

      @brodiejones2028 ปีที่แล้ว

Same here. The ultra is fast enough for everything I use it for, is sooooo much cheaper, I can run apps from my ultra on my PC and even though the iPad display is brighter and generally very good I can't tolerate blooming and so the Samsung wins the display contest for me. The iPad 4:3 aspect ratio is an archillies heel as well. Great for seen browsing but lousy for movies, TH-cam, photo editing and video editing. 3:2 is the ideal compromise in my opinion but the 16:10 of the ultra is more useful more of the time then the iPad 4:3

A lot of people seem to miss the fact it works that way but I totally get what you're saying. Face ID for me gives the perfect balance between privacy/security and convenience. I wouldn't really compare it to Windows Hello as there aren't really notifications to check on the Windows lock screen, but I hate that on my Android devices I can't actually read notifications on the lock screen as I'm not happy to have them shown to the world, but fingerprint reads on Android tend to fully unlock the device immediately, taking you away from the lock screen
