Cristin Milioti is the MVP. I’ve loved her forever, and she absolutely kills it. The casting director for the movie and show absolutely knows what they’re doing.
Milioti is a great actress and has also been a star on Broadway. She starred in the Tony winning musical Once and was herself nominated for a leading actress Tony. In Penguin, her Sophia Falcone really does look like she was locked up in Arkam. Talk about a very dangerous woman. The show itself was excellent. Still amazed at Colin Farrell under all of the makeup and prosthetics. There was one very brief moment when the camera caught Penguin's face and you see Colin's eyes underneath. Joel (Michael Zergen) from Mrs, Maisel met a very quick end. If the writing continues to be this good, Penguin is going to be a winner. I really liked Agatha. Katherine Hahn never disappoints. I also love Aubrey Plaza. Over the years she has extended her range as an actress and, like Hahn, doesn't disappoint. The cast was very good and getting Patti Lupone, herself a Broadway legend, was a big plus. I liked the call backs to and transition from Wandavision as well. I can't wait to see what happens to Debra Jo Rupp's character as the coven goes down the Witche's Road. Could she actually be a witch herself who has been bound under a long spell? Hmm...
Glad to see it. She was done dirty by HIMYM and hope she gets to do great things, here.
Aubrey Plaza is so underrated. When she and Hahn are on screen at the same time it’s magic. Pun intended.
I want her to punch me in the spleen
She’s giving Lenny from Legion vibes and I’m here for it. I loved her in that role.
Aubrey Plaza is such a strange actress. It's like, she's an alien from whatever planet that accidently got famous on earth and just go with it lol
I'm really surprised that this is one of the first times she's cast as a witch because she's done it perfectly
Its funny because I got into the fake crime show in Agatha and still want to see the rest of THAT series lol.
Then you can either watch penguin or Mare of East town
I was surprised they only did it for one episode I was at least expecting two or three episodes in that style
Absolutely loved the first episode of Penguin and as good as Farrell was as expected, Cristin Milioti was a revelation as Sophia Falcone from her very first scene.
Also adored how much the city felt like Gotham.
I don't think we'll see Batman at all in the series, but I think it'll end with something that's going to get Batman's attention
It would be amazing if we did. The should use Batman the way HotD uses dragons.
I’m betting we do see Batman for one short scene (or Bruce Wayne for one short scene)
@@alexp601 you'd be better off betting that we'll see Gordon. Reeves has already said Batman won't make an appearance in the show. Watch an interview he did on Collider
@@coloradoyehti1538 He'd never lie about that, I'm sure.
Heartbeaker? You mean heartstopper
The Barbenheimer of superhero shows
Pengatha?
Agathuin?
I'm gonna miss John Turturro as Carmine Falcone as he dropped out due to schedule issues but I absolutely can't wait to see Mark Strong's cool take on the character. They did a great job with the recast
Wait isn't he dead? Falcone I mean, wast he shot by the Riddler
Turturro is great in severance
Huh. Both you and Coy compared Agatha of Westview to True Detective. You’re sleeping on Mare of Easttown!
Those two shows do have similar vibes, but yeah the stronger parody was certainly Mare of Easttown
Can't wait for the Agatha show to devolve into two characters with basically the same powers but slightly different colour schemes throwing CGI particle effects at each other...
SKYBEAM
Kathryn Hahn and Colin Farrell seem to be having a good time in their shows!
Batman Got A Mention on the News Report at the Beginning Of the Episode 'Batman Vigilante Saves Hundreds In Gotham Square'
I'm surprised how few people know the first episode of Agatha All Along is a reference to Mare of Easttown.
There's that, yes, but it's also parodying so many shows of that ilk, most drawn from the model of British shows revamping Scandinavian mystery shows. They're so common and cliched that they were already being mercilessly parodied by the likes of Charlie Brooker (in A Touch of Cloth) a dozen years ago.
OMG PENGUIN IS SO GOOD THE WRITING THE ACTING
Agatha All Along has been pretty solid so far. I think the fact that it is rather distant from mainstream MCU will help it be a fun show, suitable for the season.
She Hulk was distant from mainstream MCU, but not for the better… (I think Agatha will do better though)
@@alexp601 The real problem is consistency, moonknight wasn't spectacular, but it was well planned, unlike She Hulk or Secret Invasion. Although this show would not currently be given the green light, it could be good, Loki S2 proved it, hopefully it will be a case like this one.
I like both. Agatha is more clean cut and penguin is more gritty but both are great.
What I find interesting is some critics either don't know most of ep 1 of Agatha All Along is a satire of Mare of East town or they seem to dislike how gritty it is meanwhile they like ep 1 of penguin. Half of ep 1 of Agatha All Along is gritty because it's satirizing a gritty detective show
@@Thed538dhsk critics, opinions are simply opinions, but it’s the fans and the viewership that really matters
@@LokoHLxP true
OMG - Debra Jo Rupp is back? And she was a witch, not just a citizen of Westview!?!
NOW I want to see it.
She MIGHT be a witch. Or she might just be a really good gardener. We’ll find out.
It's great to have a double feature that's so contrasting in style yet complementary in entertainment.
Looking forward to following both week on week.
I had no interest than I saw that Aubrey Plaza is basically playing the same character as she did in Legion and now I’m in 100% as long as she is in a lot of it
Cristin Milioti is an amazing actress, she shines in everything she does, HIMYM, Fargo, Made For Love, Palm Springs, EVERYTHING! I’m so excited to see her kill it with Colin Farrell.
Great review Dan! I was just thinking about how Spin offs are kinda having a moment right now with these two and Andor.
I’ve been really liking Agatha. So far it’s the best start for a D+ show that I’ve seen in a while.
The same thing was said about The Acolyte. You people learn nothing 😂
@@KillaD69 I never even watched the Acolyte. So…no. 👎 It is the first D+ show that I’ve really liked since Andor.

Dans penguin voice is freaking amazing. We need more of this voice.
I almost dropped Agatha after episode 1. But episode 2 was much better, so I’ll keep watching
I would rate:
Agatha - It’s fine
The Penguin - See it now
Thanks for the review! Great as always
Thanks Dan for reviewing Agatha, I hoped you would😊
Purple backlight suits both subjects perfectly
Great double review. I have to admit I've been completely uninterested in The Penguin, but you've actually convinced me to at least give it a try. I was more sure about Agatha, but very pleased the first two episodes do deliver on the promise.
I was very excited for both of these shows (maybe one more than the other) and was pleased to see both of them off to a good start. I look forward to seeing them week to week
I like what Agatha all Along is doing and it has me back to the early days of excitement when Marvel started the Disney+ streaming. I like the cast and energy Hahn is giving off along with her Coven. Also Aubry Plaza comes off as fun scary and interesting, i'm looking forward to her next apperances in this show. Not sure who she is yet. saw a bunch of speculation about 2 years ago when she was announced, i think the high speculation was her being Morgan LeFay. and I think some recent comment sections i was in or some other place suggested maybe it was Blackheart from Ghost Rider. I'm not sure either way. But still like her character.
I haven't seen The Penguin yet.
i sort of forgot about it. thought i saw some review about it being, meh, i forget which, not sure it was a publication that i follow anyway or something.
I might give this more of a shot now. 🤔
I think the last time I saw Christin Milloti was a little while ago in this sci-fi show where she was inprisoned in this VR house type place by this tech billionaire guy. It had Ray Rommano as her Dad.
MADE FOR LOVE!
that was it!
2 season show on HBO Max before it changed to Max, 2021-2022
i recall liking it, i kind of forgot about it until you showed her in The Penguin show and reawakened my memory of that show. 👍
I’m not sure on Agatha yet. I was really ready to just axe it after that first episode but I went and watched the second one after watching this video and now I’m going to give it a chance. Penguin has me hooked right from the jump and I just hope it keeps up its level of excellence.
It’s no comparison. The Penguin is quality television.
Yeah no comparison at all, but both shows can still be good and watchable
this isnt a comparison video lol
@@oreomega2545 that is because there is no comparison. The Penguin is good!
I loved the premier for both these! I agree, I probably like the Penguin better, in part because I was stunned by how well they recreated the Gotham City from The Batman, but Agatha was a very pleasant surprise and looks to be a lot of fun. I hope the quality stays high with both series.
I snagged the Max/Hulu/Disney+ Bundle, and I did enjoy both premieres. Agatha feels firmly confident in its tone and characters. The Penguin is rock solid work so far. The cast is killer, showing and realizing potential from the outset. I recommend listening to the official companion podcast for the show. It’s greatly enlightening!
Did NO MAN watch Mare of Easttown? THAT was the show they were spoofing, NOT True Detective. Geesh.
Thanks Dan! Caught Agatha & (maybe) waiting on The Penguin because of it's ODD release schedule. Am HYPED for Cristin Milioti after watching her in Made For Love & The Resort. Seeing Colin Farrell as the Penguin reminds me of Oscar Issac's stellar turn in Moon Knight.
Dan is the second critic I've seen who accidentally calls Heartstopper "Heartbreaker" instead 😆
As someone who hasn't seen penguin but just finished watching the first two episodes of Agatha all along - I completely agree with the review that at least it's set up well and I enjoyed it.
Love the video Dan! Hope you’re having a great Saturday ☺️
If Colin got beat up so much in the face and throat by The Batman Part 3, I would love if he started sounding like Adam West’s Penguin
I think you have a contrast in both style and substance with Agatha and Penguin. Both very much leaning into their established looks and feel, with Agatha having a very strong Wandavision vibe to it. While Penguin runs hard with Reeves' The Batman tonal mood and actually takes it up a notch, IMO. Colin Farrell is absolutely absorbed into his portrayal of Oz both emotionally and of course physically with some amazing make up work and as a result creates a more believable world where this story can unfold. I can't say the same about Agatha. It's bland in comparison: that boring Marvel TV show look and it's horrible story pacing. Marvel still hasn't figured out the tempo of a good serial drama yet. Penguin seems to have that, not surprising since HBO has been producing some of the best genre TV for the last 40 years. Agatha is just "fine" while I believe The Penguin is at the very top of "Good" and bordering on great with an amazing set up so far. Can't wait for next week.
Loved Agatha All Along. Was so excited for it and happy it didn't disappoint (so far).
Going to give The Penguin a chance. It looks interesting enough, and I don't mind building out the world that The Batman brought us
I’m right there with you on Agatha. Wasn’t sure what we were going to get but was very pleasantly surprised. Hope they can stick the landing. Off to check out Penguin now.
The Penguin - Prestige television
Agatha All Along - Content
I loved them both (except for the fake-sounding news reports at the beginning of The Penguin, particularly how they talked about the Falcones) and am glad to hear you liked them as well.
If Agatha All Along had started with a "special one-hour premiere epidode", people would feel cheated by only getting half-hour episodes the following weeks. And they honestly felt like two separate episodes to me, not something simply cut in half for the sake of it. Not only that, they both felt longer (in a good way) than they were, so I already felt like I had a satisfyingly filling meal, so to speak, after the first episode. As far as I am concerned, they could've gotten another week of subscription and discussion out of this. But I also see sound reasons for dropping the first two episodes together, as what they do share is being the setup for the formula for the rest of the series with one stop/trial on the Witches' Road per episode (with homages as in episode 1 starring the characters assembled in episode 2), so people already know roughly what to expect.
As for Batman appearing: Comics Drake just released a pretty convincing video why not.
I watched both yesterday and enjoyed both! I wished the Agatha as detective would have continued a bit longer, lol.
love you Dan
and thought Penguin was great!
Penguin All Along-enheimer?
I haven't seen the penguin yet but if they are going to use Batman, I hope they use him like Godzilla was used the first movie. Everytime Batman shows up our attention gets pulled away as if we are running with Oswalt.
Agatha All Along is surprisingly sold so far but The Penguin is obviously better
Heartbreaker?!?! Oh, Dan, you're going to have so many Heartstopper fans all over you...
Going to have? Already do. One word, many comments.
Huh. Agatha actually sounds worth it. Might have to renew my Disney+ subscription. And glad to hear penguin is fun. I love a good crime scene
"Critical".. what a piece of... , "Dan".. let me explain... I think I need to adjust my diet into a better one... done! :)
8:55 the disservice her character got on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER will never be forgiven. So happy for her!
I'd like to give Agatha a try, but experience tells me to wait. The first episodes tend to be good and then the shows crash and burn
HEARTSTOPPER
The fans of both seem to be having a good time, so great. But I can’t bring myself to care about series that come across as insignificant.
That being said, if course I’ll get to both, eventually 😂
DC studios won TV this week for me
HeartSTOPPER!! 🙏🏻
The new set is feeling like the old one now :)
Joe Locke was actually in Heartstopper, not Heartbreaker, but they are very similar titles
Do I have to have seen The Batman to be able to follow The Penguin?
I am very different on Aubrey Plaza, I thought the acting of their characters put me off, and Plaza just seemed like she wanted to make everything feel erotic. Too much for me.
I think I had a very bad attitude going in to episode 1 since Angry Joe gave it a 3 and it made me hate the show and I gotta stop letting people affect me going into stuff though. Episode 2 kicked butt it was so much fun, so witty, the parody and the witchy parts were pitch perfect.
They should have made this a holiday special. I wish Marvel did more one-offs, so that characters can be introduced not forced into the MCU but used whenever
I was bored up to the second half of the second episode. the mayor of easttown rip off was slow. once they started recruiting witches it became fun.
Kathryn Hahn is a delight! I'm with you, Dan - I was skeptical about this show and watched the first episode almost out of obligation, but I'm enjoying it so far.
Sadly for Disney/Discovery, I have zero interest in either of these things.
I came here to laugh at how you were gonna destroy these shows after seeing The Critical Drinker's video but got quite the opposite! Wow! You have convinced me to watch both of them. Thanks, Dan!
We tend to be on the opposite side of things very often. Opinions can be very diverse!
@@DanMurrellMovies I have more stuff to dive into and nerd out about. I'm so happy for that right now. I absolutely LOVED Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin from Netflix's Daredevil and if Penguin is anything like that in terms of how good/interesting he is, this will be a treat! :D
Critical drinker just hated on it without seeing an episode. I really don't like that guy

Heartstopper not Heart Breaker
Great. So now Agatha isn't evil?
Who said anything about her not being evil?
She does evil stuff in episode 2. Tries to steal other witches powers for one. I think its a villain story.
In the comics, she has been both a hero and a bad guy over the years, but really never straight-up evil. So we’ll see.
Very good review
*heartstopper not heartbreaker, but give it a run, its fun.
SPOILER ALERT:
Wanda did not die in Dr Strange/MoM because her powers are like the powers of the Hulk when it comes to self-preservation. The Jane Doe was a misdirect and was not Wanda but rather someone else with scarlet hair and had bare feet, because she died on the Witches Road, Lorna Wu. The brooch that was found of the Mother, Maiden, & Crone, which was the lyrics in the song/incantation that Lorna Wu wrote, should be further proof of the identity of Jane Doe.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not sure about Mark strong being Falcone. Why?
We'll have to wait and see. I'm in the minority of feeling John Turturro was kind of wrong casting for Falcone, who should feel a lot more Godfather-esque. Mark Strong isn't quite that either, but I do find him more intimidating.
@@robchuk4136 I'm mainly thinking for continuity.
The very first MCU streaming series was Daredevil, not WandaVision.
Disney Plus bro Daredevil was Netflix’s and at the time kinda MCU adjacent
Incorrect. Daredevil seasons 1-3 do not count as MCU shows.
@@jonathanpayne4772 Well, they do _now_ but they didn't at the time of their release.
They supposedly count now, but they didn't at the time of creation.
Surprised how good Penguin was. No interest at all in Agatha.
Penguin >>>>>>> Agatha. Why anyone wants to watch Disney's take on CW level of production is beyond me.
What a wild concepts - ppl can enjoy different genres and styles of fiction
Nerdrotic called..he wants his opinion back
Agatha production values were great. You would know that if you actually watched shows instead of just parroting grifter TH-cam videos.
Bias tends to make many things beyond comprehension.
Why soyboyz who want to call the MCU the M-She-U and would rather hang out and shower with their guy buddies at the gym than watch shows with women in lead roles think the shows are too gay for them? Is it gay of them to want all shows and movies to be dominated by mostly men?
Agatha is NOT a well known vilain of Marvel Universe. The choice of this character for a show is total non-sense.
Y'all are beyond unhinged. Get over it and don't watch. A bunch of wackos.
If they only made something out of the well known characters exclusively, we'd be fucked.
She was a popular entertaining side character in the last show she was featured on. Who cares if she was big in comics. Itl get views.
You, ten years ago: "The Guardians Of The Galaxy are NOT well known characters in the Marvel Universe. The choice of these characters for a movie is total non-sense".
Do you see?
Also, the word is just "nonsense". No hyphen needed.
@@rayawira its clear going for non wanting character have really be a success road for D+ marvel...
the entertainment space is just so crowded I cant bring myself to watch either of these shows because they’re on such niche characters that didn’t need a whole show made out of
I'm liking Agatha All Along so far, overall. i have to admit that I think the humor doesn't work in some places, because they do that Marvel thing where they try to ease tension with humor, where sometimes you want the tension to just sit there without getting squashed. But it's still a good time.
I have mixed feelings about The Penguin. Having it so disconnected from Batman kind of left me wondering why I was watching it. And although I think Farrell did a great job, I grew up on the 60s show and the Keaton movies, so this doesn't really feel like the Penguin to me.
I thought it good, but not great. Found it off Penguin spent so much time with black kid, and yet NOT ONE of his gang ever called him...?!
With all that's going on, only his bosses once interrupted his time.
Agatha her acting is a joke
I was not expecting to like Agatha more than The Penguin, but I did. I think Penguin had some tone and pacing issues in that first episode.
Loving the direction of Agatha All Along so far.
Skipping the Penguin,
I still haven't seen "The Batman" and have no pull to watch it. I want a goofier Batman not a serious/realistic kind.
Denying yourself of some decent entertainment (as far as the first episode anyhow it could go south later) I’d argue you can watch the show and forget the movie - they do a quick 30 second fill in of the relevant info
Nobody wanted an Agatha show. I'm skipping this entirely. The MCU is dead
Nobody wanted a Penguin series. We already had 5 seasons of Gotham.

I did not like THE BATMAN and from everything I heard about THE PENGUIN, I won't like it either.
