Im a die hard Liverpool fan, but 1 of my best mates was a huge leeds fan growing up. Him and his dad had season tickets for Elland Road and every now and again his dad had to work so I would go with him - it was around this time - Smithy, Viduka, Batty, Milner, Fowler, Robinson etc. Some of my fondest football memories and I dont even support the club but the atmosphere and the support around the team at the time was exciting to be involved in. Hope Leeds get back into the Prem soon where they belong, but us LFC fans will be sad to see you take Milly back from us

A lot of shade being thrown at Alan Smith. By joining Manchester United, he contributed funds to saving Leeds United financially. That's one of the best things a Leeds lad can do for the club. Anyone with bitterness to him is misguided - he left because if he didn't, Leeds United may not even exist. Especially him. He saved the club. He and Milner are as loyal good Leeds lads as they breed.

@@bens4602 Lol come now mate, let's not be daft. This one transfer didn't save the club from going under. That's revisionist, melodramatic nonsense. Furthermore, again it was not his job to "save the club." It was admitted that the move generated at most a couple hundred thousand pounds toward club debt, inconsequential ultimately for a club millions in the hole. He knew what he meant to Leeds, and from his own mouth he'd never go scum. There were other moves available, but the Leeds board were in a rush. Smith could have slowed things down by refusing the move. Right or wrong, whatever one's opinion is, let's just drop the mad "he did it to save the club" nonsense. It's juvenile and nauseating.

@@GuinessOriginal Oh yeah. How else do you propose to keep improving the squad? By using the same players? United have a long list of home-grown players who have become solid players for the club with some becoming legends of the game. You can't just say United bought the league and ignore the perseverance, the determination and the hard work the staff of the club (from the players to the manager and the coaches to say the least) put in to stay at the top.
If it is so easy to buy the league, then why haven't Chelsea or Arsenal done the same. They have the money power to do it too. To blindly say it's because United bought the league is disrespectful to the club.
As for the current situation at Manchester United, it's due to the lack of a clear path/plan that the club has suffered. The board of directors, the transfers, the fans, the poor recruitment (both with managers and the players), all have contributed to the failures that United is facing right now. You just can't say it's down to the money the club has spent over the years.

It's such a shame thay Alan Smith had the misfortune he did with injuries, i think the leg break was the turning point. He was such an exciting player to watch and you always felt like something was going to happen when he was on the ball. I think that he could have been world class had the stars aligned for him.

Agree with you. But leeds fans at the time should understand further the consequence of not selling smith. It was survival or bust at the time for the club. And unfortunately united were the only club that had the money on the table.

I think most fans realise that the Man Utd offer was indeed the only genuine one and money up front and not like most fees which are staggered. To think Smudge waived a signing on fee when Harry Kewell and his agent "stole" half of the transfer money shows that he did what he could. It wasn't his fault the club was mismanaged so badly. Any bitterness from fans should be reserved for Peter Ridsdale and the club's directors and so called accountants who allowed this to happen in the first place. "Living the dream".......

I was always a big fan of Smith at United. I think his passion and tenacity would endear him to any set of fans. The spell when he first joined and RVN, Solskjaer, Saha and Rooney were all injured (Rooney I think signed still carrying his injury from the Euros) he lead the line well and helped us pick up some important points. His performance in midfield against Chelsea in the 1-0 win in 05/06 was fantastic too.
That being said, I don’t think he ever really had the ability to be a first team player at United. While his performance against Chelsea was great, he was by no means a central midfielder and being pushed into that position by Roy Keane’s sudden exit did no favours for him. His injury certainly hurt his career, but I think his days at United would have been numbered regardless.
