Alfredo Di Stefano is entwined with the legend of Real Madrid and their early dominance of the European Cup. He and they won five in a row. But he might have been a Barcelona player and, actually, fell into Madrid’s possession courtesy of an historical quirk.

@@suchspain Franco loved football and Real Madrid as his grandson recognised... Real Madrid, before Alfredo arrived in Barcelona, was the 4th Club in Spain. So why Alfredo wanted to play for a team that never wins a league? Why he was going to refuse to play with the Copa Latina Champion? Atlético was supported by the regime and then it was Real Madrid. Both teams supported Franco. Santiago took part of the Coup d'etat of Franco.. Its simply. Alfredo never could play for Real without the Regime's intervention since Millonarios had no rights to sell Alfredo. Millonarios had on loan this player legally since Lima's Deal. In case this player moved to other team before October of 1954 needed the River Plate permission. So it was impossible Alfredo could play for Real. That's why regime banned Alfredo to play for Barça and later forced to Barcelona president to refuse his rights on this player. After October 1954 Barça had the rights of the player... But one year remaining till the date so Real Madrid and Barcelona at the end dealt with Millonarios to avoid this team claim to FiFa and got this player back to Colombia to play the last year remaining so Real wouldn't have any chance to enjoy the player. Once Spanish Association (Regime) took that weird decision, Alfredo said I am not gonna accept it, I am coming back to Buenos Aires. To avoid it, regime forced Barcelona president to refuse his rights on Alfredo and sell them to Real. Simply but Real Madrid and Fascists does not like to recognise...

And in such legendary achievements name like Puskas (best European player at the time, who led the amazing Hungary 54 team that amazed the world and should have won that WorlCup final) , Gento (one of the fastest players of his time and in the HOF of Spanish players, leading Spain in the 64 European championship win) or Kopa (one of best strikers in Frances history) should be overlooked. The "controversy" is entirely due to the success that Madrid had AFTER signing Di Stéfano. But at the moment, people didn't think it was worth the money or the trouble. There is even a catalonian newspaper celebrating the end of the story once Barcelona left the race for Di Stéfano. At the time, he was seen as a great player, sure, but they had Kubala already, and Di Stéfano was apparently out of shape (he was't playing during all this mess) and as a rebel (he left Southamerica and went to Spain despite having his contract in full effect with Millonarios). So, why would you spend all this money in a player that played in the same position as your star, was out of shape and had a character? Besides, they knew he was good, but how good really? More than Kubala? We now know he was, but is like saying today who will be better, Mbappe or Haaland? Nobody REALLY knows, only the people of the future will be able to say with certainty. And maybe ten years from now nobody remembers, I don't know, Mbappe for instance, because some injury or bad career choices. We don't know, and neither did the people back then. This happen (kind of) with Beckham and Ronaldinho: They were signed the same summer and people at the time thought that Beckham was better, and Barcelona had to "settle" with Dinho... And the rest is history.
Besides, the main interest in Barcelona in signing Di Stéfano was that Kubala was sick and they were afraid he wouldn't be able to play anymore, so they wanted a replacement. But then, Kubala recovered, and was just then when they tried to sell their rights to Juve.
Also, the idea that Franco was actively trying to rig anything in Madrid's favor is not very credible. If he was such a big Real Madrid fan, why it took almost 20 years of dictatorship to do something to favor Madrid, so they could start winning? Barcelona and Athletic were the kings of spanish football back then, why would he allow that? Although people are very very sure that Madrid was definitely Franco's team, there is nothing to prove it. There is as much evidence that Franco was a Madrid fan, as there are that he was a Barcelona fan... But Madrid had a better story of success, so there you go. For instance, the goverment helped building the Nou Camp and helped them sign very good players (like the video says, Kubala among others). Heck, they even gave him a couple of gold medals to thank him for the help with the debt! So there's that.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment!

I blame that phenomenon on hipsters. This is something that has happened in the U.K before but it is pretty rare and doesn’t happen nowadays. The biggest example I can think of is Wimbledon moving to MK. Yet you see this in America in ALL sports. NFL teams move around in particular. I think we see this because there is a big contingent of casual supporters who don’t actually care about the club as much as they do for talking about the club. I’ll give you an example, I know a girl who ‘supports’ an NFL team and she lives here in the U.K. Everytime a game is played here (regardless of whether or not it’s her team playing) she will go and see it and she will also stay up into the early hours of the morning to watch NFL games on T.V. A few months back I told her about the situation with the crew and for the life of her she couldn’t wrap her head around why it matters for a team to move. She didn’t have any connection to the fact that the team represents an area, a community, familial ties and supports local business. To her, it’s just a team that play a sport once or twice a week and that’s all. I realised that she was watching games and following the action just so she could post about it on social media and tell people that she watched the game. She didn’t really care. Hell, I don’t think she even gave it a second thought once the game finished and truth be told wasn’t at all concerned with whether or not her team actually won or played well. Interestingly, in the U.S there is a culture of meeting up before games and hanging out with other fans, having barbecues outside the ground etc... and this becomes a big part of the community and creates new friendships and support groups. If you suddenly pull the team out, you effectively spit in the face of this. But unfortunately in many cases these true and authentic supporters are the minority.

I don't think I followed this because what I got from the video doesn't make sense to me. I'd be grateful if somebody corrected me:
    - Due to circumstances, di Stefano is basically owned by two clubs. If he is to be secured immediately, both clubs have to be paid.
    - Barca pays River Plate, but decides to cheap out and, unwilling to "pay twice" they basically tell Millionarios to piss off, despite them repeatedly willing to negotiate.
    - Real goes "Fuck it, let's buy him" and pays Millionarios.
    - Barca caves in and sells their share to Real.
Where exactly is there anything in this story that makes it seem like di Stefano should've become Barcelona player when they decided to cheap out and just sit and pray no other team will show interest for a years and a half? That's like buying a house with a mortgage, only paying upfront portion refusing to pay the mortgage and claiming it's rightfully yours.

It makes no sense this video because why Barça was going to sell his rights if Di Stéfano was Barça player since October of 1954? They're not explaining, to let Di Stéfano to play in Real for the Millonarios remaining year, Real needed the agreement of River Plate, and that never happened due to Barça got his rights. So it was impossible Di Stéfano played for Real legally. The only reason why real madrid and Barça later dealt with Millonarios was to avoid Millonarios claim to FiFa his return to Colombia since Millonarios had the right to get this player on loan till 24th October 1954 as late.
Its only with the Spanish Association intervention (Franco regime) when Real had the chance get him on his squad but Alfredo didn't accept to play for Real and Barça simultaneously and said he came back to Buenos Aires, so Spanish Association threatened and forced Barcelona to refuse his rights on the player to avoid Di Stéfano's departure to Argentina.

That is just not true, Madrid was the last city standing against Franco's army and, although in the last few years some independents of Catalonia had tried to draw it as a war against Catalonia, it wasn't, never. There war a harmful split that ended in a war-related to ideology, it was a war-related to the political movements of the age, but it was not, neve, a territorial issue. There were plenty of Catalans with Franco and against Franco, exactly the same that happened in the whole country. And, yes, there was a FC Barcelona president killed by Nationalist troops, but during the regime the club was -as was usually- extremely kind and well related with the dictator.

He was the best player in the world when he arrived at Barcelona. DI STÉFANO never had to play for Real just because Millonarios had no rights to sell. The only way to let play Alfredo for Real it was with the River Plate consentiment, that never happened. So he had to play for Barça at the end of 1954 since Barcelona got his rights. But the regime forced to Barcelona to refuse his rights before he had the right to play for Barça. The only reason why Real Madrid and Barça later tried to deal with Millonarios was because to avoid Colombians claim to FiFa to get Alfredo back to Colombia to play the year remaining. And after that year he was Barcelona player. Then it's when Dictatorship intervened banning foreign players first and later through Spanish Association and forcing Martí to refuse his rights.

Alfredo Di Stefano is often overlooked..
I for one think he has a rightful claim to be considered as the GOAT...He is right up there with Pele, Maradona and Messi imo...

Personally, I think the reason why he's overlooked is that he was NOT a national legend. What do I mean, exactly? The fact that he never played in the World Cup, not to mention switching from one country to the other meant he was never able to show the world how great he truly was.

There are Several Rivalries in Club Football all over The World but Real Madrid and Barcelona have the most heated Rivalry. Thanks to Franco. For all his bias towards Real Madrid had made Real Madrid the Most hated clubs of Spain outside Madrid Province.

Real Madrid is the most supported club in Spain, not only in Madrid, but also in the rest of the country. There are lots of surveys to prove you are lying. And, about the Franco’s bias, it is just a story that foreigners want to believe, but it is not true. In fact, and this video acknowledges it, Real Madrid didn’t won La Liga between 1933 and 1954, precisely the core of Franco’s regime

    Favouritism ?
Barcelona won more league titles than Real Madrid during Francos times
Barcelona granted their Golden medal to Franco several times. RMadrid did not
Troops took Barcelona on storm? Barcelona surrender when the troops were near since the war was almost lost by that time.
Madrid was under a 2 year siege, I know because my grandad fought in the trenches of Madrid those two years for the republican side.
There it goes the narrative from Mr Lowe a known Barsa fan.
    Edited for two more points:
Madrid was the center of the regime cause it is the country capital.
Actually Atletico Madrid was the team of the regime at least for the first few decades. It was called at first Atletico Aviacion, and it was a branch or team of the airforce.
